Christian Peacemaker Teams logo designs

Summary

On September 21, 2012, I met with project liaison Tim Nafziger to present sketches of four logo concepts. Tim then shared the sketches with CPT’s Iraq, Colombia, Aboriginal Justice and Israel-Palestine teams, and the CPT steering committee. Participants used a logo design rubric to gauge the effectiveness, authenticity, timelessness, simplicity, and distinctiveness of the proposed concepts, and shared their responses via phone and email. Tim collected and collated those responses and sent me the final documents. We also had a phone conversation to further interpret the feedback he and I had received, and to determine the direction for the black and white logo designs.

Although reactions to the four sketches were varied, there was a general consensus around several points:

• Affirmation for concept one, particularly the way the intertwined people and roots communicated partnership and support, working at the source of oppression, activity and motion, grassroots engagement, and renewal

Christian Peacemaker Teams mission, vision and values

Mission: Building partnerships to transform violence and oppression.

Vision: A world of communities that together embrace the diversity of the human family and live justly and peaceably with all creation.

Values: CPT is committed to work and relationships that:• Honor and reflect the presence of

faith and spirituality• Strengthen grassroots initiatives• Transform structures of domination

and oppression• Embody creative nonviolence and

liberating love

Messaging

• A holistic understand of peace and peacemaking

• A positive vs. a negative focus• Partnership and collaboration• Diversity of cultures, languages and

locations• Welcome toward people of other

faith identities

Design direction: Tree of life

• A biblical symbol that reflects a deep vision for peace and reconciliation

• A meaningful image that Christians share with several other religious, theological and cultural traditions

• Multitude of different fruits communicates harmony in diversity

• Appreciation for the general message of concept three, particularly the inclusion of people joined together in mutual support and the possibilities of a tree of life formed by doves in flight

• Strong preference for seeing re-workings of concepts one and three and less interest in pursuing concepts two and four, namely the Hands in the Tree of Life and Under the Tree of Life images respectively

• Interest in seeing how the letters “CPT” and/or the organization’s full name would interact with the visual mark and further clarify its meaning

In light of the feedback on the four sketches, I created a black and white logo that brought together the roots of concept one and the dove canopy of concept three; and a black and white logo that reworked the “dove-tree” theme of concept three. I also included English and Spanish versions of both logos and provide examples of how each logo could be applied to a CPT hat.

Logo Design: Concept 1

Visual mark

• Based on Roots of the Tree of Life (concept 1) and Doves in the Tree of Life (concept 3) from the presentation of sketches

• Stylized approach to dove-like figures distinguishes this visual mark from those of CPT’s peer organizations

• Roots reflect need to resist violence and oppression at their source. They also communicate working in partnership from the grassroots up

• People figures are not identical to represent diversity

• Dove-like figures, viewed from a frontal perspective, come together to create tree of life and peace

Hats (English)

• Red color caps (Pantone 187) are essential to the CPT uniform on project sites. White on red treatment is simple, clear and easy to recognize

• Two possible design options are presented here

• Spanish version would use same design with the letters ECAP replacing CPT

• Design allows for easier use of other acronyms to represent other languages
