Pharrell Williams’ song has been everywhere this last year, making us smile. What makes you happy, what fills you with joy? People seek happiness in all sorts of places, in work, relationships, sports and hobbies. Some find temporary happy feelings in drugs, alcohol or shopping; but drink and drugs wear off, there will always be newer fashions or the latest upgraded gadget to buy, it is never enough. Christmas is all about happiness and joy, the joy of spending time with family and friends, good food, gifts exchanged. Christmas is also a time of joy because it marks the next step in God’s plan to sort out all the mess in the world. Jesus is God himself squeezing into human form to meet us where we are, so we can know what God is like. Through his life, sacrificial death and rising to new, deeper life, Jesus opens the way for each of us to be set right with God. In following Jesus we find love, community, meaning and purpose, forgiveness and the strength to make good choices. Happiness comes from knowing that whatever we go through, God is with us.
