Fred of music recorded 2014-2016. When P.H. Fred told me a few weeks ago that he was off to catch Yusuf Islam (the artist formerly known as Cat Stevens) in Chicago, driving via the Mississippi Delta, and would be stopping at the Crossroads, I asked whether he was buying or selling. He smiled enigmatically, but said nothing, and I still don’t know what the answer is, even after listening to this massive outpouring of music. A songwriter of such prodigious output, who can dip deeply at will into the diverse talent pool of musicians in New Orleans (and beyond as well) in order to have his songs realized, must have made a deal with someone, right? On the other hand, Fred collects the souls of those who have gone before, or at least the ghosts. Collects, converts, distills. In this deep, labyrinthine set you’ll find covers (Dylan), collaborations (with the likes of local talent John Fohl, Beth Patterson, Lindsay Hausman and Jack Miele) and homages (Neil Young, Velvet Underground/Lou Reed, Randy Newman and Alice Cooper, among many others). No subject too dark; no topic too taboo. The songs presented here run the gamut. “Another If I Fall,” a Fred original, inspired by recent events, wrestles with the difficult topic of teen suicide, as the singer wonders “And if I fall / will you walk away? / And if I fly / Will you just walk away?” On “Color Me Manhattan,” offered here in both the original version and a “Chelsea remix,” Fred sends us a postcard from New York City – “The Chelsea or Algonquin, I can’t decide which one; the needle or the bottle, I can’t decided which one.” The cut also marks the only recording
