Term 2 2021 12th May, 2021 WYREEMA STATE SCHOOL 12 High St., Wyreema QLD 4352 PH: 4596 0333 www.wyreemass.eq.edu.au From Mrs Bretz’s Office: Welcome to Week 4. We have settled into the term well with all teachers and students engaged. This week, all students in Year 3 and 5 complete their NAPLAN testing. This year, we are using the online platform to complete testing, except for the Year 3 writing that is on paper. All students participated in the testing and have done a wonderful job in the writing and reading. Tomorrow the students will complete the numeracy component. NAPLAN is just one form of assessment that is used for our students. We always use a collection of data to support our students with their learning. Well done to all students for completing the testing. Next week, we will complete the week 5 data cycle for all students. This will inform our reading and writing teaching and learning. Our teachers collate and analyse data for each student to inform the teaching and learning for all. The Prep students have also completed Australian Early Development Census with Mrs Warren. The Australian Early Development Census (AEDC) is a nationwide data collection of early childhood development at the time children commence their first year of full-time school. The AEDC highlights what is working well and what needs to be improved or developed to support children and their families by providing evidence to support health, education and community policy and planning. It is collected every three years. Congratulations to the students who have represented our students in the various sports over the last few weeks. A huge thank you to Mrs Scott for coordinating our students and training students for events. Please read below the many students who have participated in sporting events and represented our school. We also received a Highly Commended award at the Toowoomba Show for our vegetable garden. Thank you to Mr Grimes and the Buddies Edible Garden Project who support us with seedlings each term. This week, I am currently on leave. My husband had hip surgery two weeks ago in Brisbane and I am away this week now he is home. Whilst I am on leave, Mrs Darr and Mrs Warren are replacing me. If all continues to go to plan, I will return next week. Thank you to Mrs Darr and Mrs Warren and all staff and parents who have been so supportive around this. I look forward to returning next week. Thank you to the P&C for the wonderful Mother s Day Stall last week. The students had many options to choose from and the bundles were wrapped beautifully. Thank you to our volunteers who were able to be at the stall on the day and help the students with their choices. It was also wonderful to see our woodwork projects in the store. We hope all mothers had a wonderful day and enjoyed their purchases. On the 26 th of May, all students will participate in an incursion with Mrs Victoria Byrnes. All students will be participating in a food education program called The Mad Food Science Incursion run by The Root Cause. The incursion is an interactive workshop where students learn about the following topics: 1. Why their body is unique and different to their friends. 2. How to taste food with their tongue, not their eyes. 3. What is a real food & what is a processed food. 4. Why their body needs a rainbow of real fruit and vegetables. 5. Understanding how sugar affects mood, behaviour and learning. 6. How to read labels on food packets, and why real food is so much better.

PBL expectations:

Week 3 – I am safe: I follow the eating area expectations During this week, we revisited our expectations around the eating areas. The students were reminded of the target behaviour of sitting on the cement while eating (Preps to year 4) and at the tables (years 5 and 6). Students also focussed on putting hands on heads when the whistle blows and asking permission before leaving the area. Week 4- I am respectful: I model good sportsmanship The focus this week has been on being inclusive and encouraging others during activities. The students were also explicitly taught the expectations around playing by the rules of the game and waiting for their turn.

The aim of the interactive workshop is to use fun ways to get children to understand why processed foods really don’t help their bodies, and why it’s so important to eat fresh fruit and vegetables every day. Our school and The Root Cause believe this will help make your job easier to get your children to eat healthier. Permission forms will be sent home this week. It has once again be brought to my attention that there are problems at the skate park on the weekends. Please be mindful of this and speak with your children. The park is a wonderful part of the Wyreema community and it is disappointing to hear that some are swearing, leaving rubbish and being disrespectful to others at the park. I would highly recommend supervising your children at all times at the park and ensuring you contact police link if there are any problems at the park. Please see the attached calendar of events this term. This is an overview of events coming up for the term and we are hoping to produce this at the beginning of each term. At times, events will change but parents/ carers will be notified via text or email. My future plan is to have a yearly overview of all events and make a calendar for the year. Please feel free to provide any feedback on the calendar. Under 8’s Day is coming! Parents are welcome to attend with their children. Stay tuned for an invitation and further information in the coming weeks. We would also like to begin a monthly Wyreema Coffee Catch Up with parents/ carers. Please see the attached flyer for all parents. This week’s article from Parenting Ideas is an insight paper from Maggie Dent on why creating family rituals is so important. Enjoy the read. Have a wonderful week,

Bronwyn Bretz, Principal, Wyreema State School

The term has already been a busy one for the Preps. In Maths, they have been learning about patterns. The students have made a range of patterns including AB, AAB, ABB patterns. They have also created their own patterns and have described the pattern they made. Reading Eggs and Maths Seeds continue to be popular programs on the iPads and the children are enjoying advancing through the different levels. In English, the focus has been on traditional stories. The Preps are continuing to identify characters, beginning and ending events and personal connections to the stories listened to. A highlight last week was a visit from the school dentists. They talked to us about looking after our teeth and eating healthy foods. Two of our students, Ashton and Lachlan, were chosen to dress up as dentists. After our talk, the Preps visited the dental van and were allowed to have a ride on the dentist chair. Later this term, the students will participate in Under 8’s Day activities. Watch this space for photos of this event.
