Following the trailof conviction leads
to transformation. There are believers, and there are cynics.
The cynic looks at the glass as half empty.
The believer just sees room for improvement.
The cynic looks at the tides of recession
and mourns its ebb. The believer unearths
a million new opportunities in the sands.
The cynic thinks about changing jobs.
The believer thinks about changing the world.
The cynic reads this and sees a management course.
The believer reads this and sees a lifetime of learning.
No matter what you believe in, we’d first like to know if you believe in yourself.
Because the world has enough cynics already. Believers, this way please.

Dean’s message
Greetings!
You are at an inflection point in your career. Your decision
to pursue a programme in Management is an important one,
and demonstrates your desire to transform yourself. Quite
apart from the obvious impetus in terms of success in your
career, this is the first step towards becoming a leader.
Our alumni over the years have often remarked that their
year at ISB was a truly transformational one. Why would
they say so, you may ask?
The year at ISB will allow you to learn, think, try, reflect
and grow because the programme at ISB demands it of you.
While you will expand your skills and knowledge, you will
also be challenged into performing your best by students,
who come from all over India and around the world. You will
question your beliefs while strengthening your core values.
You will learn to lead because ISB embodies leadership
through synergy.
Over a typical year, you will be exposed to some of the best
minds from around the world - resident and visiting faculty,
leaders from industry and government, and with other
students. As you actively engage and debate in this melting
pot of ideas, you will feel the bounds of your own thinking
expand. You will learn to have faith in your abilities and the
courage to take risks, for true leadership requires both. You
will learn to make a difference along the way.
I thank you for your interest in our programme, and wish
you all the best.

Strategy & Leadership, Healthcare and Manufacturing.
Certain popular elective courses may be offered in more
than one term.
Practicum courses
Apart from regular classroom learning, the curriculum
integrates a large amount of applied learning in the form of
practicum courses. Therefore you start applying what you are
taught, even as you learn. The Post Graduate Programme is
supported by the following learning interventions:
Leadership Development Programme (LDP)
LDP helps you develop your own style of leadership.
It catalyses individual growth through a three-fold
approach of self-reflection, peer evaluation and facilitator
intervention.
Experiential Learning Programme (ELP)
The ELP allows you to work on real world business
issues through live projects offered by companies
and organisations. It enables you to apply your learning
outside the classroom setting and gain new perspectives
on business.
Planning an Entrepreneurial Venture (PaEV)
The PaEV offers you guidance on how to set up your
own enterprise. Through this elective, you will get
an exciting introduction to the process and practice
of entrepreneurship and new venture creation.
Wharton Global Consulting Practicum (WGCP)
WGCP is a cross-functional, globally oriented programme
that exposes you to the problems of international business
and equips you with consulting skills. With WGCP,
students from Wharton and the ISB jointly help US
and Indian companies enter or enhance their positions
in the North American or Indian markets.
Independent Study (INDS)
The Independent Study course allows you to explore
areas of interest that may not be covered in the
curriculum. You have the option of working on
an independent study project with another peer under
the guidance of a faculty member.
Faculty Initiated Research Project (FIRP)
The faculty members involve students in their research,
which provides significant mutual learning opportunities.
Such research projects are designed and supervised by
the faculty, and you are expected to complete the project
within the stipulated time.
*Curriculum Review
The ISB periodically reviews its curriculum to
update it for cutting-edge management thought,
pedagogy, student and industry needs. The
curriculum to be offered for class joining in
2014 will have greater depth in specialisations,
by making certain electives for each area
of specialisation mandatory. For instance,
a student intending to specialise in Marketing
will have to take a pre-designated mandatory
elective in Marketing. The student is then free
to choose other subjects in that area to satisfy
the requirement of credits to qualify for a
specialisation in that area. The overall course
structure incorporating this change will be
finalised by early August 2013.

The ISB’s unique portfolio faculty model brings together
a strong team of resident faculty and international faculty
from leading B-Schools around the world. The resident
faculty at the school are actively involved in academic
as well as industry-related research. This gives you an
insight into emerging trends in business focused on new
economies. The school also plays host to faculty from
renowned schools such as Wharton, Kellogg, London
Business School, Cornell, Duke and UCLA, amongst others.
Faculty:The best minds from across the world
It also brings many research scholars from around
the world on long-term sabbaticals.
Staying on campus with students, the faculty spends
considerable time shaping business perspectives directly,
like involving students in academic projects, or indirectly,
like engaging students in business discussions well after
classroom hours.

Learn from the rich experience
around youThe learning that you gain from peer interactions is as
important as what you gain in the classroom. Having a
diverse peer group on campus exposes you to different
cultures, ideas, and perspectives. ISB’s admissions
process is designed to build a student body composed
of professionals from different backgrounds in terms
of educational qualification, work experience, industry
exposure, functional expertise, and other such traits.
Study groups
During the course of the programme, students
are expected to work on several group assignments
and projects. While some groups are self-selected,
many are assigned by the school or faculty. This is done
to ensure that each study group has a mix of students
from diverse backgrounds and opinions which push the
boundaries of your thinking and force you to enhance your
collaborative skills.

The Centres of Excellence and Institutes at the ISB serve
as a bridge between the industry and academia. They are
involved in education, research and outreach activities
to promote knowledge creation and dissemination. Often,
students are involved in organising events like seminars,
conferences and industry leader visits in conjunction with
the Centres. This helps them get an insider’s perspective
into the area the Centre is dedicated to.
Apart from the Centres, the ISB has set up dedicated
Institutes at the Mohali campus. In addition to conducting
research and outreach activities, these Institutes also offer
a specialisation in the PGP. So you can opt to take up a
dual specialisation, such as Finance and Healthcare, or
Manufacturing and Strategy, as part of your programme.

Kedar Lele was in a responsible position at Monster.com
when he decided he wanted more. Just being a Brand
Manager was not enough. He realised that he lacked
critical knowledge in advance marketing, operations
management, leadership and change management, which
could only be gained by attending a business school.
Kedar’s search led him to ISB, its one-year programme,
a strong network of friends and international facultylured him.
Kedar believes ISB equips students with a toolkit that
helps them overcome the relentless challenges in their
careers. The well-structured curriculum, with its use of
case studies, the valuable interactions with peers from
diverse industries and the exchanges with experienced
industrialists have helped him in his career post ISB. Even
now Kedar sometimes flips through his class notes to find
answers to some of the puzzling questions at work. And
as Head-Sales and Customer Development, Eastern region
at India’s largest FMCG company, Hindustan Unilever
Ltd, he encounters many a challenge. From leading a
dispersed team towards a larger regional goal to customer
management and category development, there are many
complexities but Kedar credits his learning at the PGP,
especially the leadership and change management courses,
for laying a strong foundation on which he relies during
times of decision making. Eventually what he learned on
campus created the basis of his leadership style.
As Kedar juggles his different roles every day, he is
“I have grown as a person post
ISB. Working in a team with a set of
outstanding people who are mature yet
competitive, brainy yet sensitive and
result-driven yet collaborative teaches
you a lot about leading teams, resolving
conflicts and delivering results. I also
learnt a lot about subjects and aspects of
business that were obscure to me, and that
has made me a better professional.”
Kedar Lele (Class of 2004)
General Manager, Hindustan Unilever Ltd
grateful to have received training in this art of juggling
while at school, where he studied, participated in activities
and worked on projects, mastering the balance between
the competitive spirit and collaborative attitude. For
Kedar, this experience stretched him both personally
and professionally, preparing him for a career where he
was ready to navigate the complexities with calm and
assuredness that a year at PGP can bring about.

“I know businesses are for profit and
temples are not , but regardless of the
organisation’s nature, mission is the most
fundamental. My one year at ISB is helping
me to revitalise the Buddhist temples and
local communities in Japan.”
Keisuke Matsumoto (Class of 2011)
Director, Komyoji Temple, Tokyo
Keisuke Matsumoto, a young Japanese monk in a land of
over 70,000 Buddhist temples, was seeking answers.
He noticed that the temples were forlorn and even the few
people that visited only came for ceremonial rituals. The
temples also seemed to be contributing very little to the
society. He was overcome with a question: How could he
make Buddhist temples more relevant to the society such
that more people visited them?
He realised that he needed to update their management
methods to meet modern needs. This led him to ISB.
He knew he had to visit India, the land of the birth of
Buddhism and in India, there was no question of studying
management anywhere else. He arrived at the campus
with his family and for the rest of the year he immersed
himself in his studies. Irrespective of the field of work, astrong foundation in management techniques would help
him with his goal, he felt. He was right. Courses such as
marketing changed his perspective and opened his eyes
to a customer-centred view that he felt was lacking in the
conservative temples. Finding a balance between his duties
as a monk and a student, he still managed to study well
and make many friends at ISB.
Keisuke has spearheaded several other initiatives, all
aimed at increasing Buddhism’s appeal to a wider and
younger audience: a café designed to attract youth to
temples; an online Buddhist website, Higanji, that is now
one of the most popular web magazines about Buddhism
in Japan; a school for future monks, where they learn how
to manage their temples; and a non-profit organisation,
Oteranomirai (Japan Fellowship of Buddhists), that seeks
to “connect Buddhist monks with people, and maximise
the potential of Buddhism in society as the art of life.”
He was recognised for his efforts by the World Economic
Forum and nominated as a Young Global Leader.

Viren Wilfred Rasquinha has taken whatever life gave him
and turned it into gold – with some help along the way.
At 16, as he watched a tear roll off Leander Paes’s cheek
when he won the Olympic bronze, Viren found his calling
– he had to bring home the gold. He worked toward that
dream with much gusto. Forgoing parties, he would wake
up at dawn and train to get better at his chosen sport –
hockey. After years of effort and dedication, there was
a breakthrough. At 24, he captained the Indian hockey
team post the Athens Olympics, and much later in 2012
when India won the most Olympic medals ever, Viren had
a special reason to celebrate. He had been quietly but
furiously working with the athletes, who were trained,
guided and supported by his company, Olympic Gold
Quest.
But all this was not planned. Viren had retired his hockey
stick and had arrived at ISB to embark on a simple
corporate life but as it often happens at ISB, life had
alternate plans. When some of India’s finest sportsmen -
Badminton legend Prakash Padukone and nine time world
cue sports champion Geet Sethi - approached him with
an idea, a concept for a not-for-profit institution that can
help India win Olympic medals, he believed in the mission
and bought into the idea, however audacious it sounded.
His love for sports combined with his newly-acquired
managerial skill landed him a role that was tailor made for
him – CEO, Olympic Gold Quest. The company works to
provide athletes with the best possible support in terms
of coaches, training facilities, medical support, nutrition
and equipment. Leaning into his learning from ISB,
he helped build OGQ from scratch. From an organisation
with no funds and no office space, OGQ is now a respected
organisation with Rs 4 crore in funds and many athletes
in its roster. Finally, an institution was built and India’s
hopes for Olympic medals brightened.
Viren has also received the Arjuna Award for Hockey
from President APJ Abdul Kalam in 2005, which is one
of the highest honours bestowed by the Government
of India on sportspersons.
“I have always believed that if you do your
job very well, money and fame will follow.
So I never really thought about making
money but I always thought about making
a difference. I am a very proud Indian
and I always wanted to do something for
the country, something that would make
people happy.”

Change has been the only constant in Sipika’s life.
After having lived in Zambia, Muscat, Mussoorie and
Delhi, when Sipika chose ISB above other reputed
American business schools, there were some murmurs.
But Sipika arrived at ISB with a simple plan. She aspired
for a better role in consulting, a familiar field, but then
something unexpected happened. PGP cut loose a plethora
of opportunities that she did not realise existed prior
to her ISB experience. So, she did what she was really
good at. She grabbed for the opportunity. She changed
her industry from consulting to marketing, her function
from finance to healthcare and her location from India
to Switzerland. And along the way she married her peer,
Abhishek Pandey.
Sipika’s life was never quite the same.
ISB led Sipika to the opportunities that have transformed
her life. She credits the programme and her class of
talented peers for giving her the motivation to look for
challenging opportunities and the confidence to tackle
them successfully. When her first job off campus led her
to Switzerland, she counted on the alumni for assistance
and they responded. Since then she has moved three
countries and has always found a network of alumni
willing to offer support and guidance.
Professionally, her growth trajectory has been
phenomenal. By accepting new challenges and looking at
them as growth opportunities, her career has progressed.
“It was in ISB that the idea and confidence
to make a career shift struck me. I was
able to introspect and find the right kind of
profile that suited my personality, skill and
acumen.”
Sipika Singh (Class of 2004)

By the time Tom joined ISB, he knew India better than
anyone else in his class room.
From interior Assam to Kanyakumari, he had travelled
through the length and breadth of the nation in sleeper
trains and experienced an India, foreign to most city
dwellers. His journey had begun on a whim. Quitting a
well-payed job, he set out to experience the continent
that had captured the world’s imagination in recent times.Nine months later, he returned to the US but when he
still couldn’t shake India from his thoughts, he decided
to return. But this time he had a goal: he wanted an
education in management from a world class institute in
India. He did not think twice before joining ISB. From the
infrastructure to the faculty, he connected with the global
flavour of the school, convinced that this was the perfect
place for international students.
His career objective was to remain in the finance sector
while also working in the social sphere. Having observed
India closely, he was aware of the challenges that majority
of Indians still face – whether it is regarding finding
affordable medical treatment or solutions to agricultural
problems. He believed that through his experience in the
finance sector he could make a difference in the lives of
ordinary Indians. Luckily for him, he found that he could
combine his two passions at ISB and also get invaluable
advice from experts in this niche area that eventually led
to his future job.
While at ISB, Tom spent his year wisely, increasing his
knowledge in all aspects of the finance-social sector
area. From taking courses in rural marketing, finance
“ISB has been very important to me. As a
foreigner, my understanding of India has

had not been for ISB.”

and entrepreneurship, to working with centres involved
in emerging markets, he learned all that he could. He
met industrialists who visited the campus routinely
and had long discussions on the nuances in the Indian
finance system with the faculty. This knowledge helped
him in his career later when he had to navigate the
intricacies of the financial system. Nothing about the
country was alien to him and even if he had questions
in topics such as agribusiness or the medical field in
which he had little expertise, he knew he could reach
out to the many successful ISB alumni in that area. This
reassurance boosted his confidence and he pursued his
career unrestrained and unrestricted by fears of the risks
involved.
As Co-Founder and Partner at Aspada Investment
Advisors, Tom has achieved the goal that led him
to ISB, of working in venture capital investments in
underserved markets. At Aspada, Tom oversees thecompany’s early-stage investment forays in agriculture,
healthcare and education – sectors vital to the nation’s
progress.Tom believes he has the best job in the world,
one that takes him to India’s interiors in the mode
of transportation that he enjoys most – trains.

Ankur Warikoo from the PGP Class of 2006 and co-founder
of Accentium Web is a strong believer in the digital future.
Ankur, currently the Head of Groupon Emerging Markets
(India, Thailand, Indonesia and Philippines) co-founded
Accentium Web (total of six ventures including Taaza.com,
Gaadi.com, and SecondShaadi.com) along with his friends
from ISB.
Ankur entered ISB with an eclectic background – a bit of
physics, some astrophysics and a stint as a consultant.
In a year at ISB, he learned far more than he had
envisaged. He learned that he could take risks and still
emerge successful, that he could hold his own amid a sea
of talented and opinionated professionals, and that he had
a safety net in his class of well-qualified peers to assist
him if it was required.
So armed with confidence and knowledge gained from
the PGP, he set out to make connections through Internet
portals. He, along with his peers at ISB, pooled ideas
to build websites that connected people – with each
other, with affordable vehicles, and with educational
options. It was not easy. He found it hard to convince
people that dreams matter and that pursuing his dream
was worthwhile even as he quit his high-paying job as
a consultant. But a lot had happened in a year at ISB.
His confidence was strengthened. His knowledge in the
basics of business was also strengthened. He learned by
observing and absorbing all the ideas that floated around
him. Be it from the faculty, the talented peer group or from
visiting industrialists. He had found peers that mirrored his
aspirations and this increased his motivation to succeed in
his goal of starting something anew. Ankur was prepared.
His way of thinking about problems had been transformed.
With sharpened analytical skills and the ability to think
through problems from different perspectives, he proved
his naysayers wrong. Post his exit from Accentium, an
opportunity to lead Groupon in India arose and it was
natural that he accepted. He had learned that when
opportunities presented themselves, you grabbed them.
At Groupon, he was called upon to build not just the
company’s India chapter but the whole category since
the country was still unfamiliar with the concept of local
deals. Leaning into his learning of frameworks at school,
he has hurled himself headlong into dealing with these
challenges and achieving success, one deal at a time.
Today he applies those frameworks not just in the Indian
environment but also diverse markets in South-East Asia.

Aarthi joined Siemens Communications as a campus
recruit from REC, Trichy. Her work involved system
programming and learning all that is to learn in latest
technologies. She then moved to the US to join an
e-business consulting firm where her role involved
implementing e-business solutions for customers.
The global economic slowdown made her re-examine
her career as she witnessed fundamental changes
in the dynamics of her business, with offshoring
companies creating greater value for customers.
That was when she decided to change tracks from
software development to the business side of things.
ISB was her natural choice when she thought of
pursuing a management course from India.
Aarthi recalls entering ISB with some trepidation, meeting
highly talented and accomplished professionals from allwalks of life as her peers. But her grit and focus saw her
end the year on a glorious note with her topping the class
as the ‘Scholar of Excellence’.
Currently, Aarthi works at Cognizant as the Director of
business development and operations for the APAC region.
A dreamer at heart, Aarthi enjoys creating and narrating

academically, prepares you to meet any challenge.”
