2018-2019 SCHOOL YEAR RECAP

GLOBAL CONNECTIONS NIGHT: Class of 2022 On March 7th the Freshman Cohort organized an engaging program as they hosted Consuls General from Greece, Taiwan, Cyprus, and Costa Rica. Specific questions pertaining to a variety of geopolitical issues ranging from immigration to public transit were asked of the consuls general. An open dialogue was facilitated by questions translated in the native language of the Consuls General. The round-table discussion of global perspectives on current issues provided our freshman students with practical application of information and analytical skills acquired in their 9th grade classes.

GIS NIGHT: Class of 2021During the 2018-2019 school year, the Sophomore Cohort developed “Story Maps” using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) mapping skills. Topics introduced during the Global Connections Night during their Freshman year with the Consuls General from Ireland, Mexico, Dominican Republic, and India were researched further and interviews were conducted throughout the school year. On March 21, 2019, the students presented their research highlighting the GIS framework for gathering, managing, and analyzing data in the Pope Theatre and celebrated with dinner featuring selections from the represented cultures.

CULTURAL FIELD TRIP EXPERIENCE: Class of 2020 On March 21st, the Junior Class toured Holy Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church, followed by an authentic lunch with a Greek culture speaker.

AP CAPSTONE: Class of 2019 & 2020 During the 2018-2019 school year, all students in the Globalization Academy Junior and Senior Cohorts were enrolled in AP Capstone. According to the College Board, AP Capstone “equips students with the independent research, collaborative team-work, and communication skills that are increasingly valued by colleges. It

cultivates curious, independent, and collaborative scholars and prepares them to make logical, evidence-based decisions.”

AP Capstone is comprised of two AP courses — AP Seminar and AP Research — and is designed to complement and enhance the discipline-specific study in other AP courses.

INTERNATIONAL SKILLS DIPLOMA SEAL (ISDS) Class of 2019 On March 25, our Seniors who completed the requirements for the ISDS presented their projects for approval in the Pope Learning Commons. The Globalization Academy offers opportunities for all students to earn the International Skills Diploma Seal. Students are encouraged to meet with Senora Rosemary White in Room 81 for more information.

From the Georgia Department of Education: “In today’s global marketplace, it is important for students to acquire the interdisciplinary skills for globally competency and competition. The International Skills Diploma seal is awarded to graduating high school students who complete an international education curriculum and engage in extra-curricular activities and experiences that foster the achievement of global competencies. It is a signal to employers and higher education institutions that a student is prepared to participate in the global economy.”

Graduation PartyClass of 2019On Sunday, May 19th, 2019, parents, students, and Globalization staff celebrated our Senior class with a party at Olde Towne Athletic Club. We are excited for this class and look forward to sharing their plans for the bright futures that lie ahead.

Travel OpportunitiesAll StudentsIn 2019, a group of Pope students travelled to India with Mr. Prill and Dr. Danielson over the February Break. Our foreign language teachers sponsored a trip to Spain during Spring Break, and Pope Culinary sponsored a trip to Greece in June. Mr. Prill will be leading a Culture and Service in the Dominican Republic opportunity (September 21-28, 2019), and the Holocaust in Europe tour (June 7-16, 2021).

Suggested DonationAs in previous years, a donation for all Globalization Academy students is requested. Freshman $150.00, Sophomore $100, Juniors $75, and Seniors $50 per student.
