Progressive Genetics and Munster A.I. operate the largest beef cattle breeding programme in Ireland through its joint testing and bull stud operation at the National Cattle Breeding Centre (NCBC). The NCBC beef breeding programme is designed to identify and test superior sires of each beef breed for commercially important traits. As you will see from this Catalogue, this highly successful programme has delivered a line-up of independently proven superior beef sires to ensure today’s market demands, of high growth rate, muscling, easy calving, quiet temperament and maternal traits, are met in an efficient and profitable manner.

In addition to the sires from the NCBC programme, as a direct result of International partnerships and in line with our aim to meet your demand for high quality cattle, we have identified the best sires for the Irish market from the leading beef programmes from around the world, BBG, Sersia, KBS Genetics and Genes Diffusion. Consequently, Progressive Genetics have available to you:

FINISHING SPECIALISTThe superior sires identified for finishing are the sires which will efficiently produce heavy,high grade, high value carcasses.

REPLACEMENTThe superior sires for replacements are those which will deliver females of high maternal value i.e. high milk, fertility and calving ability

PEDIGREE ROYALTY SIREA pedigree royalty fee applies to these sires at the time of registration of pedigree progeny. This is collected by the relevant breed society. No fee applies to commercial calves.

Vaccinations & Dosing

Complete all vaccinations 3 weeks prior to the breeding season.

Ensure appropriate measures are in place to control fluke and worms in cows and heifers.

Cows

BCS- Body condition score is crucial in achieving cows returning to heat and conception rates. Autumn cows need to be in a BCS of 3-3.25 at breeding, spring calving cows can be slightly less. Secondly the loss in BCS from calving to breeding needs to be minimized to 0.5. Always separate dry cows and milking cows as first calvers, thin cows, those with little milk need to be supplemented after calving until they go back incalf, the level of supplementation will depend on the silage quality.

Clean healthy uterus

At risk cows need to be treated for uterine infections 28 days after calving by your vet. At risk cows are cows that had difficult calvings, retained afterbirth, caesareans and those passing a discharge. Research has shown that Metricure at Day 28 followed by PG 10 days later to be effective. Any cows calved 40 days not detected in heat needs to be examined by your vet.

Get Body Condition Score right. Easy calvings and treat the difficult ones.

Separation of the cow and calf 3 weeks before breeding is an excellent and simple way of getting cows cycling. This can be done easily by having an opening from the creep area out into a paddock and locking out the calves by day initially and into the creep at night allowing them to suck twice a day. This will get cows cycling 3 weeks earlier as was demonstrated on the ‘better farms’.

BreeDing SeaSon- aLL aBout heat DeteCtionYou will have to have a vasectomised bull or else use scratch cards or paint sticks.Vasectomised bull-A vasectomised bull fitted with a chinball either the cheaper ukal or the more robust harness is the best way to heat detect sucklers, as the presence of the bull will induce cows into heat and he will work 24 hours 7 days a week.Scratch cards- Scratch E cards are excellent however they need to be heated immediately prior to application either by a hair dryer or on the dashboard of the car with the heating up high, otherwise they will not stick.
