WHATSINANAME—TEN QUESTIONS

John passed away peacefully, asleep in his own

bed, on Friday July 6, 2018 at age 75.

Our sympathies to John’s wife Margaret and their

three sons Shaun, Chris and Matt and family.

John was a great family man. He loved his boys

and actively involved himself in all of their pur-

suits. He served as a treasurer on committees, a

coach, a manager, a mentor, a fundraiser, a cook,

a taxi. There was no job to big or small for John.

He was also very talented on stage, singing with

his siblings. As a young teenager, his first job was

in the record bar at Nock and Kirby’s Department

Store in Sydney. While working his way up to de-

partment manager of electrical goods, he met

and worked with the likes of John Laws, Joe the

Gadget Man, The Everly Brothers, Johnny O’Keefe

and many other celebrities. This is where his love

of music developed. He will be sadly missed.

Davey G and Strings At our last Gig on the 15th July we were fortunate to welcome Davey G and Strings to

our club with Dave Gardener (Reeds); Edward Fairlie (Trumpet); Peter Hooper (Banjo);

James Clark (Bass) and Daniel Zampatti (Drums)

They played a good range of Jazz with most featuring many fine tunes made famous by

the one and only Louis Armstrong. At first, I thought that they may only play a few of his

songs in the 1st bracket but to my surprise “Satchmo” was being featured throughout

the day which was very well received. During the 1st bracket there were many great

standards such as “All of me”; “When you’re smilin’”; “A kiss to build a dream on” and

“Puttin’ on the Ritz”

Looking out onto the Golf Course

around 2.00pm, it looked a really love-

ly day but only when you were inside

listening to “Davey G” as it was very

icy cold and rather windy (a very lazy

wind at that). For us, the 85 members

and guests, we had the perfect seat –

listening to the band playing such won-

derful music in the warmth of the Club

house and being waited upon by the

very busy Golf Club staff.

During the second bracket, Louis fea-

tured again with “Hello Dolly” from

1963; “West End Blues” (1928) in which Louis was noted to have been the first to Scat

and to perform as a soloist in a Band. Then there were songs such as “Blues, my

Naughty, sweetie baby gives me” – such a great rendition; Just Squeeze me” and “High

Society”.

During the last Bracket we were treated to “Pennies from Heaven”; “The Panama

Rage”; “Bourbon Street Parade” (and to those who did not hear the introduction by

Dave, it wasn’t called Burger Street Parade). This was sung by Edward Fairlie who was

supported by an eager Dave Gardener (but he was singing “Bill Bailey”). I am not sure

what you call this double song, but it was very well done. Dave and Edward also com-

bined well during this tune to carried out a “duelling Scat” which was quite fascinating –

a definite first for me.

I’m sure that a lot of the audience were sitting there hoping and praying for a certain

finale to complete proceedings and they were not let down as Dave (Clarinet) and Dan-

iel (Drummer), performed the “Golden Wedding/Caravan”. I have heard Dave play it on

a number of occasions and he does so well. This was such a wonderful arrangement to

complete the day.

Well done Davey G and Strings, for an excellent afternoon of quality entertain-

ment. John Bunn—President

BALLARAT JAZZ CLUB—

38th MERIMBULA JAZZ FESTIVAL- 8-11 JUNE 2018 Jim & I travelled to Merimbula staying overnight at Lakes Entrance and arrived Friday 8th June. My daughter Natasha who lives in Can-berra & husband Frank arrived 7pm, fed & put children, Marley & Lonneke to bed and off they went to the Jazz. We offered to babysit for them!

Saturday morning was full on! Jim put the banner together and I attended to the costumes in readiness for the Jazz Street Pa-rade. The colours this year were Orange, Yellow & Green.

The owners of the Wharf Museum & Restau-rant, Anthony & Sally brought their children along as last year their daughter Imogen walked with us and I brought along a costume for her. Their son Alex & Marley were the banner holders. Some of you may know Anthony’s father – he was Michael Daly who was the retired barber who made headlines in the Ballarat Courier for his many years attending to the hair of many gentleman around Ballarat & district in-cluding Jim.

The parade made its way down the street and ended in Beach St overlooking the sea. The musos played 5 tunes:- Bourban Street Parade, Dr Jazz, Bill Bailey, Royal Garden Blues and ended with When The Saints Go Marching In.

Once again the Canberra Swing Katz enter-tained the crowd in front of Twyford Hall ahead of the street parade. They held dance lessons in Twyford Hall on Sunday morning followed by some demonstra-tion dancing on the deck near the Waterfront Café.

As well as our regular bands who have been

at Merimbula for many years, Canberra shone out with 14 school/college bands as well as 19 small bands as they did last year. It’s great to see all these young ones taking an interest in Jazz . We had a spe-cial interest in the Canberra bands as our Marley is taking an interest in music.

Two bands I took special interest in were Rob-bie Rags The Classics and Zackerbilks and yes they are from Canberra. I found out that both Robbie Mann (pno) & Zach Raffan Tpt had both been to Ballarat playing at the Australian Jazz Convention. Don’t for-get to catch them at this years Convention! And then to my delight Rod Andrew leader of Hot 7 Jazz Band who has played for many years for Ballarat Jazz Club had Zach Raffan playing Tpt in Twyford Hall.

Well, I’ll be waiting for my Merimbula Jazz festival newsletter to see what colours they will be choosing for 2019 festival and the two young banner boys Marley & Alex asked if I could make them a vest like Jim was wearing.

Oh, what a night it was, it really was, such a night! The Benny Goodman/ Billie Holiday show on the 7th of July was a sheer delight and brilliance, but until you hear Andy Firth play his clarinet, one has not experienced BRILLIANCE. I first heard Andy play at the Newcastle Jazz Festival in 2016, but to hear him play in a small, intimate venue was an absolute privilege. On drums was the talented, hard-hitting Dean Cooper. His solos were great with much cheering from the audience. He too, is a musical wonder. James Clark, on the bass was not to be out done either. I have heard James a few times play-ing at the Ballarat Jazz Club. (I believe he formerly played in the ABC Orchestra). He is also a tal-ent to be reckoned with. On piano, playing as he always does, tickling those ivory keys, melting each note into a master-piece of magic was the one and only Joe Ruberto. At last we have the songstress, Rebecca Mendoza, who believe it or not performed in her coat all night after commenting on Ballarat’s wintery weather. What an amazing talent, as she belted out songs of the Verve and Decca years. The night, it was great. The audience were in awe as each artist became an extension of the time, interweaving through the decades of the wonderful music of Benny Goodman and Billie Holiday I am still trying to climb down from my massive high.!A now, adrenaline depleted, Marion McHenry
