“PFOA Water Crisis: Paying it Forward”

If you could help save lives by providing clean water for those who have none, would you?

In December 2015, residents in the Village of Hoosick Falls and Town of Hoosick in upstate New York learned thattheir local water source was contaminated with PFOA, a chemical that causes a number of health effects, including thyroid disease, high cholesterol, and cancer. Since then, other communities have learned the samething. All have gone through, or are going through, a season of not having easily accessible potable water whilefiltrations systems are being installed to remedy the situation. Through our experience, I think it is safe to say thatwe can now more closely identify with countries who don’t have access to clean water.

Many outside agencies have stepped in to help us. This is a luxury 3rd World Countries don’t have, but we canmake a life-saving difference in their lives by “paying it forward” and stepping in to help them.

Women and children in Uganda walk 2-5 miles, often twice a day, to fetch water infested with micro-organismsthat often lead to disease and death. Many widows can’t provide for their families and often children can’t go toschool because they have to fetch water. Clean water would make a world of difference.

Our Mission: to Provide 7,000 Ugandans with Clean WaterFrom now through the end of the year we are running a campaign called “PFOA Water Crisis: Paying it Forward”through the Ugandan Water Project. Our mission is to raise funds to rehab 7 borehole wells that could serve asmany as 7,000 people – about the same number of people who were without easily accessible potable water inHoosick Falls and the Town of Hoosick (the pioneers in the PFOA water crisis) from Dec. 2015 – Mar. 2016 due tothe discovery of PFOA.

Borehole Wells Rehab – Just $2 pp Provides Clean Water, Hope and LifeBorehole wells are the primary drinking source for millions of people in Africa; however, over 30% of the wells inSub-Saharan Africa are broken at any given time due to neglect. Water is there, but cannot be accessed. TheUgandan Water Project rehabs these wells and works with community leaders to develop a strong buy-in for themaintenance and ownership process, so the wells don’t fall into disrepair again.

The cost to rehab each well is $2,000, times our goal of 7, brings the campaign total to $14,000. That is just $2 perperson to bring clean water, hope and life to 7,000 Ugandans. We are asking families, individuals, churches, organizations, businesses and school groups to consider making donations or raising funds to help us meet $7,000of that goal, and we are hoping to raise the other 50% through matching donations of $500 or $1,000 each.

Make a Difference Locally and GloballyI hope, as we are doing what we can here at home to support the cause and encourage those who are sufferingfrom the effects of PFOA, that we can also make a difference globally. If you can empathize to some degree, couldyou find it in your heart to help us pay it forward? Or if you aren’t directly affected by the water crisis, but wouldlike to support others who are, how about making a donation in their honor, that would spare Ugandans who areliving with the effects of bacteria-laden water that can lead to disease and untimely death.

All donations are tax-deductible and can be made through our Ugandan Water Project campaign page athttp://ugandanwaterproject.com/product/pfoa/ or by writing a check to Ugandan Water Project and mailing it to:UWP, 2648 Rabbit Run, Bloomfield, NY 14469.
