With experience working at a regional campus of Ohio University, she is aware of the impact of a leader’s presence on faculty, staff and students at all sites. “The impact of informal interaction with undergraduate students that comes with living on campus can’t be emphasized enough for fostering an enriched educational experience,” she said. “At the same time, Pfeiffer’s adult studies and graduate programs are vital to its future. Graduate faculty members are a valuable resource for understanding and addressing the needs of students in the Charlotte and Raleigh markets and I’m eager to consult with them in ways that best serve Pfeiffer.” Among Dr. Keith’s credentials are a B.A., political science, State University of New York, Binghamton; M.Ed., counseling, University of Pittsburgh; and Ph.D., higher education administration and student affairs, The Ohio State University. DR. KEITH NAMED PRESIDENT NEW LEADERSHIP TO UPHOLD FOCUS ON STRATEGIC PRIORITIES

On July 1, Pfeiffer University welcomes Dr. Colleen Perry Keith as its tenth president. Dr. Keith, regarded universally as a thoughtful and effective leader, has served since 2009 as president of Spartanburg Methodist College (SMC), Spartanburg, S.C. She brings with her an impressive record of higher education administration and fundraising success.

Her professional experience covers teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate levels and administering financial aid, academic affairs and advancement. She has held positions of leadership at institutions that offer single and multiple campuses in both public and private settings as well as those affiliated with The United Methodist Church.

“Dr. Keith is absolutely the right leader for Pfeiffer,” said Samuel “Chip” Asbury ’78, ’87 (MBA), board of trustees chair and leader of the Presidential Search Committee. “Her clear passion for students, a consistent track record of success in regard to student recruitment and fundraising, and a solid understanding of the United Methodist tradition are sure to have a positive effect on two of our largest strategic initiatives: increasing enrollment for all academic programs and growing the institution’s endowment.”

Under Dr. Keith’s leadership, SMC updated and implemented its master and strategic plans; launched and completed a $15 million capital campaign; started two new academic programs; initiated new construction, renovated existing space and acquired property for expansion; enhanced public relations and marketing efforts that resulted in the doubling of inquiries from prospective students; and increased annual giving by 249 percent.

“It’s clear that even for nonprofit institutions, not ‘making a profit’ is out of the question,” said Dr. Keith. “A strong financial position is crucial to set the right trajectory for Pfeiffer, just as it is necessary to service debt and provide aid to students who need financial assistance to attend. I look forward to generating new resources while managing existing ones in concert with Pfeiffer’s leadership team.”

While Dr. Keith and her husband, Barry Keith, plan to reside with their two dogs at the president’s residence on the Misenheimer campus, she intends to maintain a regular presence at Pfeiffer’s campuses in Charlotte and Raleigh.

Graduate faculty members are a valuable resource for understanding and addressing the needs of students in the Charlotte and Raleigh markets and I’m eager to consult with them in ways that best serve Pfeiffer.”

Among Dr. Keith’s credentials are a B.A., political science, State University of New York, Binghamton; M.Ed., counseling, University of Pittsburgh; and Ph.D., higher education administration and student affairs, The Ohio State University. She has served as a development executive at Ohio University, Kappa Kappa Gamma Foundation and Methodist Theological School, Ohio.

PFEIFFER UNIVERSITY—CONNECTIONSPAGE 2

Endowed scholarships, established and sustained by alumni and friends of Pfeiffer University who often name the awards in honor or memory of loved ones, are vital to the recruitment and retention of deserving students. The availability of these funds is often a key factor in the decision-making process of prospective students and their families.

“Many alumni remember that scholarship awards made their time at Pfeiffer possible,” said Erica Burroughs ’04, director of development.

“Initiating or contributing to endowed scholarship funds is just one way of ensuring opportunities exist for current and future students to benefit from Pfeiffer’s academic experience and student development programs.”

The experience of Ashley King ’16, from Concord, N.C., illustrates this. A mathematics and secondary education major who aspires to teach high school math and pursue mission work, Ashley is the first recipient of the Jean and Wade Mobley Mathematics Endowed Scholarship. The scholarship is made possible by the estate of Jean B. Mobley, emeritus professor of mathematics, who died in 2012. Through a planned gift to Pfeiffer, Dr. Mobley provided the funds for the scholarship named for her and her husband.

“Originally I planned to enroll in a state university that I knew would be affordable for my family but my scholarship made it possible for me to become the person I was meant to be at Pfeiffer—my home away from home,” said Ashley. “To say I’m grateful is an understatement; I love Pfeiffer and wouldn’t trade my time here for anything.”

Newly established funds designated for science and nursing majors will soon provide support for deserving students. The first awards will be given in fall 2015 from the Riemann Robertson Manly Research Endowment, which became fully endowed earlier this year, in honor of Michael Riemann, emeritus professor of biology, and in memory of biology department colleagues Clyde Robertson and Jethro Manly. Earnings from the fund, which is currently valued at more than $119,000,will support an annual award for an outstanding undergraduate research project (see article below) and stipends for undergraduate research opportunities in biology and chemistry.

“The Riemann Robertson Manly Research Endowment enables us to recognize our most outstanding student researchers,” said Mark McCallum, associate vice president for academic affairs and chair of the biology department. “Opportunities to conduct research during the academic year and summer months certainly contribute to a more enriching experience for our science students.”

In addition, the Florence Nightingale Endowed Scholarship, created in October by Lee Strong ’73, will eventually be awarded to students majoring in pre-nursing, nursing or pre-medicine. The distribution of awards will begin upon the completion of the fund.

DOING ALL THE GOOD THEY CAN...

NEW ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIPS POINT PFEIFFER TOWARD IMPORTANT GOALS

Jean and Wade Mobley Mathematics Endowed Scholarship recipient Ashley King ’16 met Larry Mobley, son of her scholarship’s benefactors, at a recent scholarship dinner.

UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH SHOWCASED Freshmen Darius Bryant, Kevin Jimenez and Darwin Ramirez (pictured), all majoring in pre-medicine or an allied health field, recently impressed judges as well as professors and students from a number of respected universities with a presentation on their research about the effect of drinking water during exercise on heart rate.

Their poster presentation was accepted to the Symposium on Health Equity and Interprofessional Practice, held Feb. 27-28 at Virginia Commonwealth University. Students and faculty of that institution, University of Virginia and University of Richmond and others were onsite for the conference—with only Pfeiffer and host Virginia Commonwealth selected to present undergraduate research.

“Mentoring undergraduate research is a longstanding priority of the mathematics and science programs, particularly for juniors and seniors,”

said Vinson Sutlive, professor of exercise science. “In this case, first-year students seized an opportunity to carry out research and present their findings at a regional conference, something that their counterparts at a larger university might not experience through four years of college. It’s very rewarding to support students who demonstrate such a high level of initiative and intellectual curiosity.”

An anonymous $30,000 gift to Gustavus A. Pfeiffer Library in Misenheimer was made in late February to is allow improvements to be made to the building’s entry—both functionally and aesthetically. The project, which is part of Pfeiffer’s ongoing ICARE program for capital improve-ments, includes renovation of the exterior entrance, a new custom front door that reflects the building’s original architecture, renovation of the interior vestibule for much-needed storage and an upgrade to the security system. All improvements meet the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

“These new features are exciting for several reasons,” said Lara Little, library director. “The changes will make for a smoother entry for all users and the new security system will more reliably track library materials that enter and exit the building. We’re very grateful for the generosity of the donor who recognized this vital campus need.”

Renovations will take place during spring and summer, scheduled to be complete for the start of the fall 2015 semester. To contribute to an ICARE project, contact Erica Norris Burroughs, director of development, [email protected].
