ABOUTPETRONAS

Petroliam Nasional Berhad (PETRONAS) is Malaysia’s fully integrated oil and gasmultinational with proven capabilities in a broad spectrum of the petroleum value chain.Building on the success of managing Malaysia’s oil and gas field resources, PETRONAShas grown into a major global oil and gas company.

PETRONAS strives to contribute to the wellbeing of the people and nations whereverit operates by developing and adding value to oil and gas resources in a manner thatcarefully balances commercial, environmental and social considerations.

Page 4: PETRONAS Technology

TECHNOLOGY THE DIFFERENTIATORIn today’s challenging market environment, PETRONAS leverages technology as a key differentiator in order to gain a competitive advantage. The organisation is a foremost provider of industry technologies and engineering innovation, pursuing new research frontiers relentlessly and redefining solutions which are economically more competitive and exert superior operating performance.

Technology developed by PETRONAS spans the entire oil and gas value chain. Programmes in seven Focus Areas – Enhanced Oil Recovery, CO

2 Management, Geo Imaging, Contaminant Removals, Advance Materials, Flow Assurance and

Sustainability – yield outstanding proprietary innovations. At the same time, the Group has its eye on niche technologies that will give a sharper edge in markets of the future.

Seismic Imaging provides state-of-the-art subsurface imaging and reservoir monitoring for exploration and production; Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) expands the lifespan of oil fields; and Carbon Dioxide (CO

2) Management enables operators to

capture, transport, store and utilise CO2 for other purposes, including EOR. In the area of Sustainability, the focus is on

development of non-conventional carbon feedstock as an alternative for petroleum-based products. Collectively, a competitive range of technologies add value to operations.

Removing Impurities

PETRONAS has a broad portfolio of advanced technologies and technical knowledge in the removal of contaminants from hydrocarbon feeds. These range from pre-engineered modular units to highly integrated, multiple technology operations and gas processing solutions. They enable customisation and efficient gas treatment, reducing footprint, hence minimising capital investment and operating costs.

Environmentally friendly technologies are pursued to manage high CO2 fields. Towards this end, PETRONAS successfully

developed PN-1™, a multi-layer membrane fibre capable of removing CO2 from natural gas effectively and economically. To

eliminate mercury from hydrocarbon feeds, ionic liquid technology HycaPure™ Hg efficiently mop up all species of the contaminant using novel customised formulations.

Pipeline Integrity

Protecting an extensive network of pipelines is a suite of solutions for pipeline maintenance, inspection, strengthening and repairs. These include In Field Liner ™, an internal pipeline composite corrosion barrier which can be installed in-situ; Aqua MTM®, a non-intrusive subsea pipeline inspection tool based on Magnetic Tomography Method (MTM); and PIPeM™ which monitors the “health status” of pipelines on real-time basis.

The ProAssureTM family of products, comprising ProAssureTM Wrap, ProAssureTM Wrap Extreme and ProAssureTM Clamp, leverage on the light-weight and corrosion-resistant qualities of highly durable composite materials to preserve pipeline integrity. Besides these, REMCOAT™ , a proprietary three-layer coating system, offers a cost-effective solution for pipeline protection against corrosion.

Flow Assurance

To maintain productivity, cutting-edge solutions have been created to handle solid deposition, emulsion treatment and sand management. The common issue of clogged wells is addressed by SolidClenzTM, a custom-designed formulation that effectively cleans out bores and tubings, increasing production significantly. Another innovation, PETRONAS Sand Solutions, is a comprehensive methodology utilising proprietary engineering tools for sand management in oil and gas production facilities.

Drilling Solutions

In drilling, the objective is to conduct operations safely and efficiently. Technologies that support this include MG3DF™, a high performance drilling fluid whose unique formulation gives outstanding drilling properties. Another state-of-the-art tool, iCWD™ or Intelligent Circulation While Drilling (iCWD), enables long periods of continuous drilling and minimises Non Productive Time (NPT).

Process Optimisation

PETRONAS has intensified efforts in process optimisation and reliability programmes. Innovations include iCON®, a process simulation software designed to enhance plant performance; SmartCenTM, an online, real-time metering supervisory system; Mass Transfer Technology which optimises downstream production and distillation processes; the Vibration Clamp™ that controls vibrations in piping systems; and P-RBITM, a web-based software that optimises plant inspection and maintenance, avoiding lengthy turnarounds and unplanned shutdowns.

Other solutions are Sep-iSYSTM, a separation system for waxy and fouling services, heavy slugging and sloshing facilities, and sand removal; P-VIP™, a process optimisation methodology that blends engineering knowhow and process simulation capability to increase yields and throughput, minimise hydrocarbon losses and improve energy efficiency; and P-EDMS™, a web-based engineering design and data management system. All these technologies have been successfully applied in PETRONAS facilities and have contributed to improved Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE).

Asset Integrity

A suite of engineering solutions has been developed to maintain asset integrity. PETRONAS Asset Life Studies (P-ALSTM) evaluates plants to improve integrity, reliability and operability. GUSA™ assesses the integrity status for Fit-For-Purpose (FFP) of fixed offshore structures in fulfilling their required functions, while PETRONAS Equipment Reliability Strategy and Information System or PERSIS™ manages inspection, testing and preventive maintenance of assets.

HSE Management

PETRONAS places high priority on Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) standards and has developed its own technology solutions in this area. To maintain HSE standards in operations, PETRONAS Instrumented Protective Function (P-IPFTM) facilitates design assurance and safety standards in IPF implementation, and is an integral part of Process Safety Management. FnGMapTM

is a 3D fire and gas mapping visualisation software that optimises placement of fire and gas detectors to safeguard hydrocarbon environments, while P-ELSORTM governs the safety and operability of electrical systems in plants and facilities via its systematic tools and review methodology. Added to that, Alarm Management (P-ALARM™) methodology prevents operations beyond safety limits.

The thrust to constantly push the envelope and develop cutting edge technological solutions to challenges faced in the field enables PETRONAS to maintain its position as an industry leader.

Page 5: PETRONAS Technology

ENHANCED OIL RECOVERY (EOR)

Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR)Following the exploitation of oil/gas fields, production will begin a progressive decline and subsequently reach the mature stage through pressure depletion. In PETRONAS, extensive efforts are in place to increase the recoverable resources and/or production via Improved Oil Recovery (Primary and Secondary Recovery Mechanism) and ultimately Enhanced Oil Recovery (Tertiary Recovery). Implementation of new technologies has made an impact on increasing recovery rates and with continued technological advancement, there are still massive opportunities for further improvement. The goal is to increase oil recovery from the historical average of 35% and optimise production thus increasing value from the matured fields.

EOR technology includes the use of external energy added to the reservoir fluid system. Fundamental changes occur to physicochemical properties of displacing or displaced fluids. (i.e. density, interfacial tension & viscosity).

SustainabilityPETRONAS proactively pursues environmentally friendly and sustainable initiatives. R&D in this area is aimed at achieving sustainability through business diversification and monetisation of non-carbon feedstock as replacement for petroleum-based products. Two programmes that have yielded exciting results are Bio-MEG and Bio-Polyols.

The platform for direct conversion of palm waste feedstock to Bio-MEG, or bio-based mono ethylene glycol, is robust, carbon-efficient and competitive, with 30% higher conversion efficiency than the bio-ethanol route. Another robust synthesis approach involves the production of bio-based polyols and polyol esters from palm oil based fatty acids. The products from this process, which are important intermediates in the production of polyurethanes (PU) and lubricants, perform on par with petroleum derived equivalents.

+ Strong business growth potential due to the simplicity and robustness of these technologies

+ ‘Palm-based Polyester Polyols and Polyol Esters’ won the IChemE Malaysia Awards 2015 in the Sustainable Technology Category, and was nominated in the IChemE Global Awards 2015 in the same category.
