• A 2-year study in Petroleum Geology and Petroleum Geophysics - part of the Master programme in GEOSCIENCES.
• It is a broad and interdisciplinary study covering most aspects of exploration to field development and production.
• Geology and geophysics are closely integrated at various scales, from regional plate tectonics to basin and reservoir scales.
• Teaching is closely related to research activities at the department covering a wide range of disciplines such as sedimentology, structural geology, geophysics, petroleum geochemistry, stratigraphy and palaeontology.
• This 2-year study in Petroleum Geology and Petroleum Geophysics will prepare students for a career in the petroleum industry and associated activities. It will also provide a solid basis in sedimentary geology and geophysics for further studies for a PhD in these fields.
PEGG – Petroleum Geology and Petroleum Geophysics
Structure, short thesis (30 ECTS)
You will choose a subject for your master thesis and get a supervisor during the second semester of study The literature study is designed in cooperation with your master thesis supervisor
This alternative requires that the student has successfully finalized GEO3211/ GEO4211 - Petroleum systems and GEO3240/ GEO4240 - Seismic interpretation before starting the MSc-program.
Structure, long thesis (60 ECTS)
Field activities have a key role in the PEGG MSc study
Modern laboratory and computer facilities are integrated in the PEGG MSc study
State of the art computer tools for processing, interpretation, modelling and visualization of geological and geophysical data (e.g. Petrel, Kingdom Suite, OpendTect, NORSAR 2D/3D & SeisRoX, ProMAX, SeismicUnix, ECLIPSE, Roxar RMS, Interactive Petrophysics, Hampson & Russel, PetroMod, TecMod, BMT, +++)
MSc Petroleum Geology and Geophysics
Norwegian continental shelf
– a unique laboratory
• Much of the data base used in the
teaching and in the research
projects are from the Norwegian
continental shelf and margin.
• After >40 years of exploration and
production these basins are among
the best studied and documented in
the world.
• Large amounts of seismic and well
data are available for teaching and
research at Norwegian Universities
(online with “PetroBank”).
