PETROGAS ENVIRONMENTAL SYSTEMS Indu str ial Va po r Recovery Sys tems Lean Oil bsorption odel Series --l \ _. _., ~ ; : : : I Q W 1 A gas contaminated with hydrocarbons, or other chemicals, enters the bottom of an ABSORBER column and flows upward contacting the counterflowi ng LEA N OIL stream. The LEAN OIL preferentially absorbs the contaminants from the gas, becoming RICH OIL. RICH OIL is sent to the STRI PPER where the ab- sorbed contaminants are removed by heating the RICH OIL, - porizing the contaminants. The rich oil is th us regenerat ed as lean oil and recycled to t he ABSOR BER complete the process loop. For a given gas mixture, the fraction of each component in the gas that is absorbed by the lean oil is a function of the equilibrium phase relationship at the components and the lean oil, the rel ative flow rates and the contact stages of the ABSORBE R The phase reaction is a fu nction of the pressure, temperature and composi- tion of the lean oil The lean oil is refrigerated to improve the eHiciency of the absorption process. The STRIPPER column is operated at a low pressure and high temperature. The elevated temperature lowers th e partial pres- sure of the recovered lighter contaminants, vaporizing them overhead as a g as. The overhead gases are cooled, condensing them to a liquid state to be sent to storage. Since hig her oil ci rcu lation rates require more energy for heating, cooling, and pumping, PETROGAS optimum design uses the minimum possible oil circulation rate. The low est molecula r weig ht lea n oil is selected for each applica- tion. This will be fixed by lean oil vapor pressure, ABSORBER operating temperature and pressure, and the components to be recovered. The proper selection of the lean oil and stripping parame ters are necessa ry to minimize lean oil losses and maximize absorption capacity.
