Civil War Reenactment at PTMS

Social Studies Students Reenact the Battle of Gettysburg

Seventh grade social studies students reenacted the Battle of Gettysburg on the front lawn of the Middle School as part of their studies of the Civil War. Confederate troops (also known as Ms. Giaquinto’s class) were faced with a loss at the hands of the Union soldiers (Mr Hudak’s class) The students then reviewed and discussed what this pivotalsoldiers (Mr. Hudak s class). The students then reviewed and discussed what this pivotal 

battle meant to each side.

McM/PTMS Spanish CollaborationMcMurray Elementary Welcomed PTMS Spanish Students 

for a Vocabulary Lesson

This month Middle School Spanish students visited McMurray Elementary to help share a lesson for 4th grade students. The PTMS students prepared and taught a vocabulary 

lesson and read the accompanying story to the students. The 4th graders also shared a Spanish song and dance that they had learned and taught it to the older students ThisSpanish song and dance that they had learned and taught it to the older students. This 

event was organized by Spanish teacher Abby Montgomery.

Local poet Andrea Perry visited Pleasant Valley in May as part of the celebration of National Poetry Month. She conducted a writing workshop for the third grade students and shared her writing process from “sloppy copies” through to the collaboration with

Bio Time at Bower Hill

On April 27, third grade enrichment students at Bower Hill presented Bio Time – a living history museum. Working with teacher Lora O’Brien, the students researched a 

personality that interested them and created a first person narrative based in that person’s life On the presentation day students dressed in costume and brought in propsperson s life. On the presentation day, students dressed in costume and brought in props 

for their character and were brought to life to share their story.

PT Junior Named a Finalist in PSU Essay Contest

Thirty‐Second Annual Penn State University 

Essay Contest

High School junior Conor Manning has been named a finalist in the Thirty‐second Annual Penn State University Essay Contest. Conor won this recognition of excellence in student writing for his essay titled “One Brave Girl.” Conor recently attended an awards luncheon 

at Penn State University hosted by the Penn State Program in Writing and Rhetoricat Penn State University hosted by the Penn State Program in Writing and Rhetoric.

Fifteen students from PTHS attended the 2015 Pennsylvania FBLA State Leadership Conference in April.  Students attended various business related workshops and took part in one or more competitive event during their time at the conference.  Congratulations to the students above who placed in the Top 10 in the state and good luck to those whothe students above who placed in the Top 10 in the state and good luck to those who

Peters Township 8th grader Alaina Nypaver will represent Peters Township at the U.S. competition of National History Day in June following her first place finish in the Junior 

Individual Exhibit Category in the state level competition. Two PT seniors also received 5th

place honors at the competition by making the state run offs placing them in the top sixplace honors at the competition by making the state run‐offs, placing them in the top six projects in their Senior Group Documentary Category.

Celebrating the Students’ Study of the Mexican Culture

This month first graders at Pleasant Valley shared their knowledge of Mexican culture at their annual first grade musical. The students also take part in a fiesta where they have 

the chance to sample Mexican food and learn songs and dances from the culture.

Congratulations to the six PTMS students who were selected by audition and performed at the PMEA Jr. High District Chorus on May 2nd at CAPA High School in Pittsburgh. This

This weekend marked the second annual PT Day at the Washington Wild Things. As a part of the event, elementary students who showed great sportsmanship could be nominated to throw out a first pitch at the game. The winners from each school are listed above.

PT Walk for Autism Raises $3,500

Sponsored by the PTHS Interact Club

This year’s Annual Walk for Autism was held on May 2 at PTHS. The walk featured entertainment, baked goods, games for children, gift baskets and more. Donations totaled 

nearly $2,500 and an additional $1000 will be matched by the McMurray Rotary. All proceeds benefitted the Autism Society and a PT Autism Support Classroomproceeds benefitted the Autism Society and a PT Autism Support Classroom.

Humane Society Collection at McMurray

McMurray Elementary’s student council led a building‐wide effort to collect items for the Washington County Humane Society this month. Students donated food, treats and toys for the pets throughout the month. The event was overseen by teachers Paige Seelhorst 

and Linda Deisingand Linda Deising.

PV’s Got Talent

Student Talent Show Raises $3,200 for the American Cancer Society and Collects 600 lbs ofSociety and Collects 600 lbs of

On April 22, Pleasant Valley held their annual talent show featuring 45 acts presented by PV students and staff. All monetary donations benefited the American Cancer Society 

and admission into the event was a food donation to the Washington County Food bank. Overall the event raised $3 332 and more than 600 pounds of food was collectedOverall the event raised $3,332 and more than 600 pounds of food was collected.

Celebrating Earth Week by Making Art from Recycled 

Materials!

As they celebrate Earth Week, students at Pleasant Valley had the opportunity to make original sculptures using recycled materials from home. Submissions were displayed in the PV Library and students could vote for their favorites. The winning artists were

Elementary students in our District took part in the Kids of Steel portion of the Pittsburgh Marathon on May 1. More than 300 students were registered between the three schools and staff members and parent volunteers organized training and wellness events for them

Candyland and special education teacher Kristin Webler was the guest speaker sharing some of the tools she uses with students with special needs.
