Principal’s Report

The term 4 final countdown is in full swing with

many exciting events and activities taking place

in the first few weeks.

The most exciting of which was the grand

opening of The Burra Café. Well done to the

barista team of Brendon and Kiara who undoubtedly make the best coffee

in the Illawarra, the wonderful food preparation team of Jacob and Caleb

and our front of house staff – Chelsea and Rowan. We look forward to

serving you between 7:45 and 8:45 on Fridays.

Last Friday the P&C held their Annual General Meeting. It was wonderful

to see some new faces at the meeting. Congratulations and thank you to

the parents who will be filling the following roles for the next year.

President: Kylie O’Neil, Vice Presidents Jeff Robson and Evan Loats,

Secretary: Paula Hopgood and Treasurer: Susan Mills.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Megan Collins for her

outstanding contribution as President of the P&C for many years.

With the weather heating up and with so many students reluctant to wear

a hat please remember to “slop” on some sunscreen. This week

construction of a shade sail over the William Ave sandpit is expected to

start. This should help a little in keeping to the sand pit cooler and provide

some protection from the sun.

Exciting news last week with Rebecca Stephens being granted a

permanent position with us. We are very lucky to have the Stephens clan

as part of our Peterborough family.

Approval has been given to establish another class in 2020, increasing

our classes to 16. Several students have been on a waiting list to attend.

Many events take place in Term 4 so please remember to check for

communication books and the school webpage for updates.

Featured classroom Welcome to HS6!

We are a high school class of eight students dedicated to developing our learning and life skill goals.

Our teacher is Cassie Relf and our learning support staff are Lee and Jill.

In our classroom we all have a voice being able to communicate in the way that best fits us. We enjoy

learning to become more independent in our everyday lives and feel proud when we are able to learn

a new skill. One of our favourite class programs is community access because we get to work with

money, go shopping and order our own morning tea from a cafe. We also get to become familiar with

landmarks and resources we can access in our community.

We are a super friendly class and enjoy seeing familiar faces and meeting new people so if you

recognise us in the community or around the school grounds please give us a wave!

-Cassie Relf

Disabled parking

Parking in front of the school has been reviewed by

Shellharbour City Council to make morning drop offs

and afternoon pick-ups a little easier. There are now

designated disabled parking spaces available next to

the school entry gate. There are also 15-minute

morning and afternoon parking spaces available.

The Burra Cafe Last week the new Burra Café opened its doors in the Peterborough kitchen. Students made a great

start to this new school initiative. Students arrived at school at 7:30 to set up the café with Sue and

Cassie. Students are learning barista skills from our own qualified barista Sophie and money skills

when operating the cash register. Students are also making sushi for staff lunches under the

direction of Lucy and Jill.

The Burra Café is opened every Friday morning from 7:45 am – 8:45 am.

Coffee can be purchased for $4.

New crossing The pedestrian entrance to our school now has a

beautiful rainbow crossing thanks to the efforts of the

Bunnings staff from Warrawong. The crossing looks

fabulous and is the designated walkway into and out

of our school. For safety reasons please do not use

the other gates.

Meeting our staff

Featured teacher Our featured teacher this month is Jacinta Pinkster.

“In 2015 I joined the Peterborough team and have enjoyed every minute of my time at school working

with different classes across the primary school. I feel very lucky to work alongside such hard-working,

dedicated and creative colleagues. Being part of the students’ lives and watching them grow and learn

is a very rewarding experience. Outside of school, I teach dance lessons for people with a disability and

enjoy spending time with my family, friends and dog-Opie! I am also very excited to share that I am

expecting a baby girl in April 2020!”

Featured learning support officer (SLSO) Our featured SLSO for this month is Isabelita.

” Hi my name is Isabelita, but at school they call me Issy. I’m married and have three grown up kids.

I enrolled in Disability Course Certificate 111 at TAFE in 2005. When I finished my course, I

volunteered at Peterborough. Since then I’ve worked across the whole school.

I was so fortunate to get a permanent job in 2017. This year I am in the Pelican class with Amy

Campbell as the teacher. I love working with all the students and staff.

I enjoy working, sewing, gardening and I love going back to the Philippines every year to visit my

extended family.”

Library report

Our 2019 Lego Challenge will be held this term. Students will have the opportunity to practice

building during Library time. The challenge will be held during lunch play so students have time to

complete their creations. There will be certificates for those who participate and prizes in various

categories. We had a great time last year so we are looking forward to another fabulous challenge.

Students have been busy reading a lot of non-fiction books. Our most popular titles at the moment

are The Dog Encyclopaedia, The Complete Cat Breed book, The Star Wars Visual Dictionary and

Star Wars Character Encyclopaedia. Students also like picture books about reptiles, sharks and

dinosaurs. We have nearly completed the organisation of our Literacy Book Bag section in the library.

Thank you to the families who sent in a green Woolies bag. – Sharon Murphy

Robotics

A small group of Peterborough primary aged students had their first visit to Oak Flats Primary school

in week 2 of this term. Jack, Taj, Blake, Hunter, Chev and Nicola joined their mainstream peers in a

technology/robotics integration session. Students paired with a buddy and had fun learning about

basic coding with Ozobots.

Over the next few weeks our students will return to Oak Flats and will explore other coding and

programming possibilities with different robots. In week 6 Peterborough students will also be

participating in an exciting LEGO build with Kiama primary students in our library.

African drumming

During assembly time last week, the whole school thoroughly enjoyed an African drumming

performance. Students were entertained with some enthusiastic and skillful djembe drumming. Our

students enjoyed the loud and varied sounds made by the drums. Students had a fun time listening,

moving, dancing and taking turns playing the drums.

Worm wee

The worm farm work crew has worm wee for sale. Worm wee is an excellent fertiliser for all your

potted plants and garden beds. Worm wee costs only $2 for two litres. If you would like to purchase

some just send in $2 and a note in your child’s communication book. Worm wee will also be on sale

at the Art Expo on November 21.

Sky’s the Limit - Olympics Last week our senior students from HS8, HS7 and HS6 attended an Olympic event at Beaton Park

athletics track with other athletes from around the area.

Peterborough students performed very well on the track and also in field events. In fact, we had a

clean sweep in the mens’s high jump when Brendon, Rowan and Caleb claimed gold, silver and

bronze medals. Students ran/walked in the mens and womens 400m, 200m, 100m and 50m races.

Students also competed in the shot putt, high jump and long jump. Well done to everyine who

participated. We are very proud of your efforts.
