The Great Northern War• A good portion of Peter’s time as Tsar was spent involved in

the Great Northern War.• He wanted control of the Baltic Sea, which had been taken by

the Swedish Empire a half-century earlier.• Because of the new reformed military system Peter the Great

put in place for Russia, the Russians won the Great Northern War against Sweden.
