    Leadership and Organization

    Peter Drucker once noted: The leader of the past know how to tell. The leader of the future will know how

    to ask.

    The leaders in the 21st century are confronted with complex challenges and traditional leadership skills are

    not enough to deal with them. In old days, top leaders made all the decisions and everyone else followed -

    Innovation was R & D responsibility and most businesses operated locally.In todays world, the leader is responsible for setting a new direction, engaging with people, and convincing

    all the stakeholders that the direction he or she has been taken is indeed the right direction. The new leader

    is responsible for fostering an environment where innovation happens collaboratively and the best people

    are used to lead a new path. The new leader is also not afraid to experiment and to make new mistakes.

    Todays leader also has to operate in a global environment and therefore must be fully aware of complex

    global challenges. This means, he has to operate in a highly competitive world, deal with new environments,

    Michael Porter in his 1996 Harvard Business Review article argues that Operational effectiveness is not

    Strategy. For many years, companies have tried to achieve operational excellence through 6 sigma, TQM,

    JIT, supply chain management and various other means and technologiesfor the most part they succeeded

    in their efforts. But they have realized that in spite of their efforts to create operational excellence, they

    could not achieve the sustainable competitive advantage they had hoped for.Strategy at its basic core has to do with positioning and trade-offs. This means not only selecting what to do

    and doing it better than anyone else for a long period of time, but more important to also do things

    differently to create an order-of-magnitude advantage over others. To accomplish this, every top leader

    needs to provide leadership in formulating, communicating and executing the organizations strategy to

    guide his or her company.

    short-term which leads to unethical behaviour. We disagree! All of us know that business leaders are

    expected to run their businesses as profitably as they could. However, that does not mean that they could

    entire organization at risk. Any business that lacks ethical principles is slowly but surely moving towards

    failure.

    Forty-three winters ago on 6th January, 1966 JRD Tata inaugurated the Tata Management Traning Centre at

    Pune to focus on Management Development, enabling the Tata Group of Companies to collaborate &

    participate on a vibrant learning platform. Over the years, TMTCs unyielding commitment to being the

    training centre of choice has remained constant with its inspiring motto Leading in Learning. Continuing

    with this tradition, TMTC was awarded the Golden Peacock National Training Award for 2007-08 in the field

    of Training & Development last year. This Award is instituted by Institute of Directors with a panel headed

    by Mr. P N Bhagavati, the former Chief Justice of India.

    The hallowed arches of TMTC have silently beckoned the infusion of fresh talent every year from the initial

    TAS batch of 25 students in the year 1972 to the current 40 to 45 participants per batch for our

    programmes. Over 40,000 senior & junior executives from more than 9,000 Tata & Non Tata Companies,

    have participated in our Executive Development Programmes. The characteristic green environs and naturalcanopy that engulfs the TMTC campus has charmed luminaries like the late Mr. Rajiv Gandhi, Mr. P.

    Chidambaram, Mr. Jagdish Tytler, Mr. Rajesh Pilot, Mrs. Sonia Gandhi, Mrs. Sheila Dixit, Mr. N D Tiwari &

    Mr. K K Tiwari, who actively participated in the IAS programmes. The recent TMTC development programme

    for the Police Department, Pune Zone is another example of how TMTC has always lived J N Tatas principles

    In a free enterprise, the community is not just another stakeholder in business, but is in fact the very

    purpose of its existence.

    TMTC faculty and industry experts come together to offer intense learning opportunities whereby working

    professionals acquire tools and techniques as take-aways that have immediate applications. Another

    constant at TMTC is change, which is evident from continually evolving curriculum and its efforts to involve

    globally diverse renowned faculty & experts. Dr. Ram Charan, a well known business consultant, a

    celebrated author and thought leader in the area of Business Strategy Execution, Innovation and

    Governance, delivered a Workshop on Leadership Agenda: Preparing for the Future to over 200participants. Apart from our 3 Tier Leadership Programmes, Tata Group Strategic Leadership Seminar

    (TGSLS), Tata Group Executive Leadership Seminar (TGELS) & Tata Group Emerging Leaders Seminar

    (TGeLS) (Harvard & Michigan series), we have had special lecture series under TMTC @ Bombay initiative

    featuring experts like Ram Charan, Bruce Katcher, Chris Bonington,

    Jagdish Seth, Shahid Siddiqui, Dr. Pankaj Ghemawat and Dr. Vijay Govindrajan. New Programs such as

    Achieving Breakthrough Services and Driving Service Quality by renowned faculty Prof. Das Narayandas

    (Harvard) & Dr. Jochen Wirtz, (UCLA) have run very successfully.

    Our Unique online training program Tata GeMs & IFRS with ICAEW Certification continues to expand as a

    popular alternative to the classroom learning environment. TMTC works with Group HR Sourcing & Talent

    Management offices and assist in Identification, Selection & Development of Tata Administrative Services

    (TAS) Managers and Group CAs / Legal personnel, TAS CELP (Continuous Education and Learning

    Programme), CA CDLP is an ongoing programme for young CAs.

    Given the Tata Groups commitment to ethical business practices, Corporate Governance programmes are

    being conducted across levels in the Group to introduce the concepts and practices of Corporate

    Governance. TMTC provides support to the Western Region Network Forum of TBEM, with the conduct of

    various seminars on topical issues, where TMTC faculty members have participated to disseminate

    knowledge on areas such as Corporate Governance & Ethics.

    In December 2008 the first of its kind TMTC Global residential programme was held at Ashorne Hill, UK

    where Ross School of Business, Michigan, Prof. C K Prahalad, Wayne Brockbank, MS Krishnan, Venkatram

    Ramaswamy & M P Narayanan delivered a 2 weeks Leadership Program. This progamme focused on putting

    new strategic tools & concepts into practice.

    Over the last few years TMTC has disseminated over 50 publications & case studies to its credit. Our

    publications include Management Briefs, Manuals, Research papers, Case Studies & the TMTC Journal ofManagement (our last journal being on Organisational Transformation).
