Preventatives.

With the return of Spring, comes the risk of the not-so-nice flea and tick pests. These pesky pests embed themselves into the skin of your pet to feed on their blood.

Flea bites may be more than an itchy annoyance to some dogs and cats. They can cause flea allergy dermatitis—an allergic reaction to proteins in flea saliva. A pet’s constant scratching can cause permanent hair loss or other skin problems. Fleas feasting on your pet’s blood can lead to anemia and, in rare cases, death.

Ticks can also harm your pet, transmitting infections such as Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain Fever and more. Pets can bring ticks into the home, exposing you and your family to illness from a tick bite. It’s critical to talk about prevention to protect you and your pet and keep these creepy crawlies out of your home!

Prevention is Key! There are many effective flea and tick products your veterinarian can recommend, including products that can be applied directly to your pet’s skin and some disguised with a tasty flavor and given by mouth.

Talk with Your Veterinarian about which product is best for your pet. Certain factors affect the type and dose of the product that can be used, including the age, species, breed, life style and health status of your pet. Your veterinarian should also be aware of all of your pet’s medications when considering the optimal flea and tick preventive for your pet.

Monitor Your Pet for any signs of an adverse reaction including: excessive itching or scratching, skin redness or swelling, vomiting, or any abnormal behavior. If you see any of these signs, contact your veterinarian.

Max (above) came in very underweight and emotionally shutting down. His owner was diagnosed with a terminal illness and Max had to be moved into a long term boarding facility. He missed his owner and couldn’t keep much weight on him. German Shepherd’s have very strong bonds with their humans and therefore didn’t do well in boarding for an extended time. It took Max some time to adjust to another move into rescue and foster care. But with patience and some time, he started to trust again. A wonderful family adopted Max and he is now a therapy dog! Pixie (above) came from a rural shelter and was

very afraid of everything. Once she came into NSDR’s foster care, she started to come around in time. She was able to transition out of foster care when she was adopted by a very loving and caring woman. She is now flourishing in her new home!

Keep Your Pets Safe During

Spring Cleaning!Be sure to keep all cleaners and chemicals out of your pets’ way! Even all-natural cleaning products can contain chemicals that may be harmful to pets. The key to using them safely is to read and follow label directions for proper use and storage. If home improvement is part of your plan, be aware that products such as paints,

mineral spirits and solvents can also be toxic to your pets. Carefully read all labels to see if the product is safe to use around your furry friends. Also, be cautious of physical hazards, including nails, staples, insulation, blades and power tools. It may be wise to confine your dog or cat to a pet-friendly room during home improvement projects.
