Dr. Marina Jaworsky Dr. Marina Lynn Jaworsky received

her DVM from the University of Illinois in May of 2015. Her interests include small animal medicine and surgery, exotic animal medicine, and dentistry.

Newly married, she changed her last name from McCarthy to Jaworsky. She and her husband live in the West Loop of Chicago with their scruffy terrier, Baxter. They hope to add another puppy to their family soon!

Dr. Jaworsky recently developed a brochure entitled “Rabbit Care 101”, a basic guide to the proper diet, housing and general care of your pet rabbit, to ensure a long and “hoppy” life. Her goal is to inform and educate clients both prior to and during their visits with their animals of all shapes and sizes.

RABBIT CARE 101

COMMON RABBIT DISEASES 1.) Gastrointestinal stasis: Rabbits have a

very sensitive gut and either constipation or diarrhea can be fatal to a rabbit.

Contact your veterinarian immediately if you see any gastrointestinal signs or anorexia! 2.) Dental disease: Due to the perpetual

growth of rabbit teeth, dental disease is another common affliction in pet rabbits. Your rabbit’s teeth should be checked

annually by your veterinarian. 3.) Uterine cancer in female rabbits:

It is extremely common for adult female rabbits to get uterine adenocarcinoma.

It is critical to spay your rabbit at a young age.

Whether it is an outdoor hutch or an indoor cage, the enclosure needs to be

big enough for your rabbit to completely stretch out and lay down in. Most rabbit cages in the stores are too small. It is better to go big! Make sure

your rabbit has a place in its enclosure to hide and feel secure. Cages should be cleaned weekly. Avoid completely mesh bottoms, as they will prevent digging and can cause pressure sores. Avoid

wood shavings for bedding which can cause respiratory problems. The best is

paper bedding without a strong odor or perfume. Finally, for outdoor rabbits,

make sure any outdoor enclosures are secure and well protected at night.

Also, consider flea/tick prevention and do not allow your rabbit on any pesticide treated grass.

The Importance of Adopting a Rescue DogThe animal community is a very tight-knit one filled with passionate people working in the best interests of pets. For rescue organizations, this passion reaches a new level.

Rescue groups take unwanted, abandoned, abused, or stray pets and finds suitable homes for them. Many rescue groups are created and run by volunteers who care for animals in their homes. Foster families help to train, play, handle medical issues and also help to solve behavior problems until the animal can find their forever home.

Elmhurst Animal Care Center is proud to partner with many hardworking rescue organizations. Most rescue pets are perfectly healthy and happy, just in need of a home! Adopting a pet is also a great bargain. We provide necessary vaccines and perform spay or neuters before the pet is placed in a home, all included in the cost of adoption.

According to the Humane Society of the United States, 2.7 million adoptable cats and dogs are still euthanized in the U.S. due to the large amount of pets coming into the shelter and too few people to adopt. By adopting a pet from a rescue, you can save an animal and open up a spot in a shelter for an animal who may need it.

Working with Rescues “ Adopting a rescue animal is a life changing event. Being able to love them and change their life, and knowing they appreciate it and love you back is priceless.”

— Danielle C, pet mom to Bo.

“We are so glad we adopted CeCe and Cooper, from

Magnificent Mutts. They have truly become family members and

we love them to pieces!”

Jamie Jones

Jamie has been grooming at Elmhurst Animal Care Center for the last year, and has over 5 years experience. Growing up with all types of animals, including dogs and cats, she always knew she wanted to work at a veterinary clinic. Jamie particularly enjoys creative grooming of both dogs and cats. When not working, she enjoys spending time with her 2 year old son, Isaac, her dogs Misfit and Walter, and her cat, Tina. She also takes great pleasure spending time in nature and crafting.

Savannah O’Keefe

Savannah is entering her senior year of high school and does the bathing for the groomers at Elmhurst Animal Care Center. She has one amazing dog named Cookie, a five year old pit bull/ boxer mix. She adopted Cookie when she began her work at Elmhurst in April 2016. She has always loved animals, which is why she chooses to work at EACC.

Kristin KullingHead Groomer

Kristin has been performing grooming at Elmhurst for three years and has been a groomer for over 10 years. She has three dogs of her own: a Miniature Poodle named Miller, a Pekingese named Rosie and her newest rescue, Archie, a Great Dane/Pit mix. She loves all animals and it is the fulfillment of a lifetime dream to work with them on a daily basis. Outside of work, Kristin enjoys camping, crafting with groomer, Jamie and spending time with her family.

How you can help support the cause: 1. Become a foster. Fostering is rewarding and

helps a scared animal feel safe & loved.

2. Volunteer. There are so many ways to help. Transport dogs, help with paperwork, fundraise, create marketing materials, or help at events.

3. Donate. Being a 501(c)3 organization MagMutts relies on the support of generous donors. Funds are used to support rescue efforts in so many ways!

4. Organize a supply drive. Food, treats and toys are always welcomed. However, piddle pads, toweling, spray cleaners and even bleach are always needed. Leashes and collars too!

5. Spread the word! If you know someone looking for a new pet tell them to adopt from MagMutts.

Where to get more information? Visit http://magnificentmutts.org/ to see available pets, fill out a volunteer application, sign-up for their newsletter or view a list of upcoming events. Don’t forget to ‘Like” us them Facebook too! https://www.facebook.com/MagnificentMutts/.

Who is Magnificent Mutts?

Founded in 2005, Magnificent Mutts is an all-breed pet rescue dedicated to providing a safe haven for neglected dogs and cats of all ages. With the help of a dedicated, all-volunteer team, over 500 pets are saved annually. Where do they get so many animals? Many places—animal control, strays and high kill shelters. They also partner with rescues in Beirut Lebanon and Puerto Rico, countries where animal rights laws do not exist. MagMutts was even selected by Humane International to be a part of their effort to shut down a dog meat market in South Korea. Why do they do this? Because they are all magnificent and deserve a second chance.

How Can You Save on the Cost of

Veterinary Care?

Enrolling in a Preventative Care Plan can reduce your long-term pet healthcare costs. How? Preventative care does just what its name

suggests—it can prevent diseases that can put your pet’s life in jeopardy and be costly to treat. Regular exams also often catch budding health issues that can become bigger problems if left untreated, saving you

hundreds—or even thousands—of dollars as a result and possibly even saving the life of your pet.

To enroll your pet or for more information, please speak with an Elmhurst Animal Care Center associate or call (630) 530-1900.
