CBD-infused products are one of the most exciting new developments in pet health and wellness available today. Capitalizing on the same benefits that cannabis provides to humans, cannabinoids like CBD can be added to pet products to promote vitality and longevity.

Hemp-derived CBD supplements are a safe and natural way to promote health in your pet. Over recent years, more and more pet owners are discovering how CBD supplements can promote health and wellbeing in their pet.

CBD, a safe and well-tolerated cannabinoid derived from hemp, supports the health of pets by interacting with their endocannabinoid system. The endocannabinoid system, found in all mammals, is responsible for regulating a large number of functions and keeping them in balance. An effective endocannabinoid system is crucial to your pet’s health, and CBD supports its efforts by interacting with its cannabinoid receptors found in the brain and throughout the body.

Daily CBD supplements may be beneficial for supporting healthy joints in your pet. Among the wide array of functions regulated by the endocannabinoid system is the immune system. By interacting with cannabinoid receptors, cannabinoids like CBD may encourage the endocannabinoid system’s efforts to achieve optimal immunoregulation.

Plus, researchers have discovered that there are cannabinoid receptors found within the lining of the joints, suggesting that cannabinoids like CBD could interact with those receptors to naturally encourage balance to help keep your pet moving around.

There’s nearly an endless number of benefits, here’s a few reasons to try:

1. SUPPORTS HEALTHY JOINTS

Regular CBD supplements can also promote cardiovascular health in your furry family member. While pet heart health doesn’t get as much attention, pets can experience heart issues, just like their human companions. Researchers have already looked into the role the endocannabinoid system plays in cardiovascular system health and are learning more all the time.

Along with regular exercise, weight management, proper dental care, precautions to prevent heartworm transmission, and a healthy diet, CBD supplements can play a role in supporting a healthy heart and cardiovascular system.

By stimulating the endocannabinoid system, cannabinoids like CBD may support the neurological health of your pet. The endocannabinoid system is tasked with influencing neuronal communication and affects its related biological functions, such as learning and memory.

Like humans, pets like cats and dogs have a very complex nervous system. Your pet’s nervous system — comprised of the nerves, spinal cord, and brain — is responsible for carrying messages to and from their brain and spinal cord to various parts of the body. A healthy nervous system is crucial for your pet to be able to perform simple motor and cognitive activities, and to respond to stimuli and commands you give them.

CBD’s interaction with the endocannabinoid system encourages balance in the nervous system, which in turn helps contribute to your pet living as healthy and happy for as long as possible.

Pet skin problems often lead to scratching, hair loss, and excessive licking, and they’re among the most common issues presented to veterinarians.

By supporting your pet’s endocannabinoid system with daily CBD supplements, you can also support the health of your dog’s largest organ – its skin. The endocannabinoid system is known to regulate skin cells and hair, so CBD’s natural health properties may promote balance in the structure and function of your pet’s skin and coat. Daily CBD supplements can help your pet’s skin be supple rather than flaky or bumpy, and can help their coat be shiny and smooth.

Containing a myriad of nutrients, hemp-derived CBD oil supplements can also help ensure your pet gets the nutrients it needs for optimal skin and coat health. CBD oil contains an ideal ratio of omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids, which play an important role in reducing inflammation. Nutrients like vitamins A and D promote skin repair and encourage skin growth, while vitamins C and E are antioxidants that can protect your pet’s skin against damage caused by free radicals and environmental exposure.

CBD’s natural balancing effects can promote emotional behavior, helping ensure that your furry loved one is happy and better able to cope with everyday challenging situations.

Pets can experience a wide range of emotions. If you’re like most pet owners, you’re likely worried about your pet’s stress levels in certain situations. A veterinary visit, a stay at the kennel, being placed in a pet carrier, fireworks, or a trip to the pet groomer can elicit stress or separation fear.

The endocannabinoid system is responsible for regulating mood, suggesting that daily CBD supplements that stimulate the system will support its efforts to keep your pet’s emotional health in balance.

5. KEEPS YOUR DOG’S SKIN HEALTHY

4. PROMOTES HEALTHY EMOTIONAL BEHAVIOR

Hemp is a member of the cannabis species of plant. Because it is non-psychoactive, hemp has made a name for itself as an accessible, environmentally-friendly alternative to many goods.

Hemp is harvested commercially for its seeds and stalks, which are used to produce a number of products – including food, nutritional supplements, medicine, body care products, paper, textiles, building materials, plastic composites, biofuels, and even pet products – making it an important renewable commercial commodity.

Because it thrives under natural conditions, hemp is typically grown outside, with both male and female plants sown closely together to encourage wind pollination and increase seed production. The hemp plant grows sturdy and tall, up to 2 to 4 meters in height, without the need for herbicides or pesticides. For cannabis to be considered hemp in the U.S., it must contain no more than 0.3% tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) per dry weight. THC is the active compound in marijuana that causes its euphoric effect.

Approximately 30 countries currently grow hemp across Europe, Asia, and North and South America, including Germany, France, Denmark, the Netherlands, Canada, Chile, Japan, and South Korea, to name just a few.

In the U.S., hemp products must be created using imported hemp. Phyto Animal Health’s hemp comes from cultivators in Northern Europe who bring generations of experience growing hemp.

CBD – one of over 100 cannabinoids present in the hemp plant – is prized for its health and wellness properties. CBD, short for cannabidiol, can be found throughout the hemp plant and is easily extracted from the plant in the form of viscous, nutrient-rich and cannabinoid-packed hemp oil. Once extracted as a constituent of hemp oil, CBD can be processed into a number of commercial products, including dietary supplements, pet products, and more. These CBD-infused products have become popular with people looking to take advantage of the balancing effects of cannabinoids like CBD for themselves and for their pets.

It is possible to supplement your pet’s system with CBD, just as you would your own. That is because all mammals have an endocannabinoid system, the bodily system with which cannabinoids interact. This means that your pet or livestock animal can likely benefit from CBD in many of the same ways as you.

It is because of this similarity between the bodies of humans and other mammals that many pet owners have started using commercial CBD-infused products on their animals. Pets like cats, dogs, horses, and rabbits can be given CBD products like those offered through Phyto Animal Health to help improve their overall wellbeing. Livestock animals, like cows, sheep, and goats, can also benefit from the positive effects of CBD.

Just like their human companions, animals like dogs, cats, and horses have an endocannabinoid system responsible for maintaining balance and health. You’ve likely heard about cannabinoids like CBD and how they can help support the health of your loved animals – including dogs, cats, and horses.

But how do cannabinoids like CBD work? The answer is through the endocannabinoid system.

Just like you, the animal members of your family — including dogs, cats, and horses — have an endocannabinoid system, a major signaling network that is responsible for influencing a wide range of functions and keeping them in balance. Your animal’s endocannabinoid system, or ECS for short, is working continuously to monitor functions and then will trigger adjustments whenever outside factors cause any of the functions to become unstable, returning them back to homeostasis.

The endocannabinoid system is tasked with regulating a large number of your pets’ functions, some of which include:

Mood

Appetite

Memory

Metabolism

A properly functioning endocannabinoid system is crucial for maintaining health and wellness in your dog, cat, or horse.

The endocannabinoid system of all mammals works the same. Your animal’s endocannabinoid system is made up of three mechanisms:

Endocannabinoids

Cannabinoid Receptors

Enzymes that create and break down endocannabinoids

Whenever an animal’s functions get out of balance, the endocannabinoid system responds by triggering the release of enzymes designed to synthesize endocannabinoids.

These endocannabinoids – the most major of which are Anandamide and 2-arachidonoylglycerol – bind to cannabinoid receptors that are found on cells in the brain and throughout the body.

Once the cannabinoid receptors are activated, they control the passage of proteins between cells, sending chemical messages between nerve cells explaining that adjustments need to be made. This process triggers a chemical response specifically designed to bring the function that had become unbalanced back into balance or homeostasis.

Cannabinoid Receptors in Your AnimalIt’s through cannabinoid receptors that endocannabinoids are able to help coordinate and regulate most of how your pet feels, thinks, and functions. Like a key fits into a lock, endocannabinoids are designed to link with cannabinoid receptors.

While there are several types of cannabinoid receptors found on the surface of cells in your pet’s endocannabinoid system, the two major ones are known as CB1 and CB2.

CB1 receptors are located primarily in their brain and central nervous system, while CB2 receptors are mostly found on cells in their peripheral organs and throughout their immune system.

The major endocannabinoids interact with these cannabinoid receptors differently. 2-arachidonoylglycerol is considered a full agonist of both CB1 and CB2 receptors, which means that it binds with, and fits well inside, both receptors to active them.

Anandamide, however, is considered a partial agonist of the two receptors. This is because while it binds with and activates them, it doesn’t fit as well inside them. As a result, it doesn’t trigger such a powerful chemical response.

Supplementing the Endocannabinoid System with CBDOver the years, more pet owners are discovering the natural benefits of supporting the endocannabinoid systems of their dogs, cats, and horses with supplements containing plant-derived cannabinoids like CBD.

CBD, or cannabidiol, is a naturally occurring, non-psychoactive, and non-toxic cannabinoid found in cannabis plants like hemp. It is one of the most abundant of the over 100 cannabinoids in cannabis.

Plant-derived cannabinoids like CBD share a molecular structure to your animal’s own endocannabinoids, which means that they can interact with their cannabinoid receptors.

When you give your dog, cat, or other animal hemp-derived CBD, the cannabinoid is absorbed into their bloodstream where it naturally stimulates the endocannabinoid system and encourages its efforts to keep your pet’s many functions in balance.

Cannabinoids like CBD can also build up in their body, which causes an increase in the number of cannabinoid receptors. This makes their endocannabinoid system’s more active and more sensitive to stimulation by cannabinoids, further supporting its efforts to maintain homeostasis.

Animal owners appreciate that CBD is non-psychoactive and well tolerated. This means you can provide your dog, cat, and horse with the benefits of supplementing their endocannabinoid systems without the animal experiencing any euphoric or other adverse side effects.

How Does CBD Help?CBD oil’s benefits for pets come from CBD’s ability to affect the body’s naturally occurring regulatory processes through interaction with the endocannabinoid system. Once absorbed into the bloodstream, CBD is transported throughout the body to interact with special cannabinoid receptors located in the central and peripheral nervous systems.

A series of neurotransmitters and receptors, the endocannabinoid system provides a number of benefits to your pet. Through interaction with your pet’s endocannabinoid system, Phyto Animal Health’s CBD products:

Promote cardiovascular function

Support healthy joints

Promote neurological health & emotional behavior

Dr. Gary Richter, a veterinarian for 20 years who practices in Oakland, has been an outspoken advocate of CBD for pets. Last year, Richter gave a presentation on the benefits of CBD for animals before the California Veterinary Medical Association.

“While there are some differences in how cannabis affects pets compared to humans, they can benefit in many of the same ways people do,” Richter told SF Gate earlier this year. He went on to say that his professional experience “has shown me that there is enormous potential … with cannabis.”

Phyto Animal Health advisory board member Liz Hughston, MEd., RVT, CVT, VTS (SAIM, ECC), who practices in San Jose and is the head technician of Vet TechXpert, first grew interested in non-psychoactive cannabis for pets after her own dog reacted badly to a pharmaceutical medication.

Hughston cites the similarities in native regulatory systems between humans and animals that allow CBD to naturally promote health and wellness in dogs, cats, horses, and other pets like it does in humans.

“Every animal with a spinal column also has an endocannabinoid system, so it stands to reason that cannabis can help many species,” Hughston said. “I think we’ve reached an inflection point in society now where cannabis use in humans has become much more widespread and accepted. People see the good it does in people and want to provide the same benefits to their pets.”

Another vet at the forefront of an effort to bring veterinary medicine into the national conversation about CBD for pets is Dr. Douglas Kramer, who runs a mobile practice in Los Angeles, California. In an interview with the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), Kramer said he’s had some 300 pet owners tell him they’ve given their animals cannabis for a range of reasons similar to those for which humans use CBD.

Interested in discussing CBD oil for your pet with your veterinarian? Here are some tips to consider before you do.

Just like our own doctors, we rely on the guidance of our veterinarians to help our pets live happy and healthy. For some pet owners, bringing up the topic of CBD oil with a vet can be uncomfortable because of its relationship to cannabis. While a prescription from your vet isn’t necessary to obtain CBD oil supplements for your pet, many pet owners prefer to get their vets take on any supplement, medicine, or food they give their pet.

First, keep in mind that while your vet may not be up on the latest research around CBD oil, it is highly unlikely that they will be surprised at your inquiry. More and more vets have acknowledged the natural balancing properties of CBD oil for cats, dogs, livestock, and other animals. Plus, because of the surge in demand for pet-specific CBD oil supplements, it is unlikely that they haven’t already been approached about the benefits of CBD from other pet parents.

Here are some suggestions for how to best approach the topic of CBD oil for your pet with your veterinarian.

Be Open and HonestThere are a number of ways to approach your veterinarian about CBD oil and how it may be beneficial for your pet. You may mention that another pet-owning friend has noticed natural wellness benefits in their cat or dog. You can also bring up news stories or articles that you have read that are relevant to you and your pet’s situation.

Don’t be hesitant to reveal why you are curious about CBD oil for your pet. While many vets are still learning about CBD oil and its wellness properties, most have purposely read up on the latest research and will be ready to help you and your pet move forward.

Be PreparedIt helps when discussing pet CBD oil with your vet to be as informed as possible ahead of time. As noted earlier, not all vets are well versed in the use of CBD oil for pets. Do your research: there is a growing body of information out there on CBD oil and its natural benefits. Coming to your pet’s doctor appointment prepared with information can help convey how serious you are about pursuing CBD oil for your pet.

The more information you can provide to your vet about your pet and why you believe CBD oil could be beneficial, the better they will be able to guide you in the right direction.

Ask QuestionsFeel free to ask your veterinarian questions about CBD oil to get a better understanding of their experience and knowledge on the subject. Your vet sees many pets everyday, so they may be able to share what other pet owners have found to be helpful.

Here are a few questions you can bring up to your vet:

In your practice, have you seen CBD oil benefit other pets?

Are you familiar with any studies or research on CBD oil?

Where have you gone to obtain information about CBD oil?

How do you recommend that I give CBD oil to my pet?

Are there any side effects of CBD oil for pets I should be aware of?

What should I look for when selecting a CBD oil product for my pet?

These and other questions you ask your vet can help the two of you determine the best possible path forward for your pet.

Your pet can benefit from the natural balancing properties of CBD at any age. While research is limited, scientists do know that the endocannabinoid system is present even during the embryonic stage. Even before your dog, cat, or horse is born, their cannabinoid receptors are already present and active.

From their puppy, kitten, or pony stage to when your pet becomes senior, the endocannabinoid system is tasked with keeping functions and physiological processes in balance. This means that no matter the age of your pet, CBD can support their endocannabinoid system and its efforts to promote the maintenance of homeostasis within the body.

Many pet owners have already found that starting their pets on CBD while they’re young is beneficial. Young pets often experience stress because of new experiences and exhibit undesirable behavior like hyperactivity, chewing, biting, and scratching. CBD’s natural balancing effects can promote emotional behavior and health so that your pet is better able to manage challenging situations.

As pets reach middle age, a variety of issues may start to appear. Middle-aged pets also often experience stress, such as during a trip to the vet or amidst a fireworks celebration. With age, they may also start to slow down and not run or exercise as much. By supporting healthy joints, promoting cardiovascular function, and promoting neurological health, daily CBD supplements help support the health of your dog, cat, or horse as the years go by.

CBD is great for pets of any age, but for most, it’s during their older years when its natural wellness properties can provide the most benefit. Senior pets often require increased attention and care. Many pet owners have found that CBD oil supplements are a natural alternative they can trust to help their pet live as healthy and happy for as long as possible.

Pet owners have found that CBD oil supplements are a natural alternative they can trust to promote wellbeing in their dogs and cats. CBD has become an all-natural supplement of choice for many cat and dog owners because it is non-psychoactive, non-toxic, and highly tolerable in animals.

A recent research review investigating the safety of CBD in both humans and animals found that controlled CBD administration is safe and non-toxic, even at high servings.

Some pet owners are concerned that because CBD oil comes from cannabis, it could cause euphoric effects in their cat or dog. While hemp’s cannabis cousin, marijuana, is specifically bred for THC, the compound that creates euphoric effects, hemp naturally contains low levels of THC. In fact, hemp contains no more than 0.3% THC per dry weight.

Phyto Animal Health uses a variety of non-GMO hemp that is naturally high in CBD to make our pet-specific supplements. To protect your pet, families of farmers use centuries-old cultivation techniques to grow our hemp without pesticides, herbicides, or chemical fertilizers.

To safely extract the CBD oil from our hemp crops, we use supercritical CO2 in a process that the FDA considers GRAS or “generally regarded as safe.” While some companies choose dangerous solvents like butane, ethanol, and hexane in their extraction process, supercritical CO2 is non-toxic and removes the risk of contaminating our CBD oil.

To further ensure that our pet-specific CBD supplements are safe for your cat or dog, all our hemp oil products undergo our stringent Triple Lab Tested™ process for both safety and quality. Three separate times throughout manufacturing, our CBD hemp oil supplements are examined for cannabinoid content and to make sure that they’re free from contaminants like mold, mildew, microbes, chemicals, and heavy metals, protecting your pet’s health and safety.

4 Easy Ways to Give Your Pet CBDYou have already learned about the many benefits that CBD provides to dogs, and you’ve selected top quality Phyto Animal Health products like Pet Vitality™ CBD liquid as your supplement of choice for your pet.

Now, you may be asking, “What is the best way to give CBD to my pet each day?” Here, we will discuss a few methods for adding Pet Vitality™ CBD liquid to your pet’s diet.

From a SpoonA popular method for giving your pet their Pet Vitality™ CBD liquid is to measure out your desired serving for your pet onto a spoon. Your pet can then lick the CBD liquid from the spoon. This method works best for pets who don’t mind the taste of Pet Vitality™.

On a TreatPet Vitality™ can also be dripped onto your pet’s favorite treats and given to them anytime throughout the day. Generally, wide, dry treats work the best for absorbing the CBD liquid. You want to try not to wet the treat too much. If you are using smaller treats, you may want to split your Pet Vitality™ CBD liquid among a few treats.

Mixed into FoodFinally, many Phyto Animal Health customers will mix their pet’s CBD liquid directly in with their pet’s food. Whether it is wet or dry food, Pet Vitality™ can be dripped into your pet’s food and then mixed thoroughly to ensure even saturation throughout the food.

Dripped onto Your Pet’s PawA clever to get your pet to take their daily Pet Vitality™ CBD supplement is to drip the oil directly onto their paw. Slowly drip the desired about of CBD liquid onto your pet’s paw. They will then naturally lick the CBD liquid off their paw. Are you using a large serving size? Administer part of the serving to the paw, allowing your pet to lick it off completely. Then complete the serving. This will keep Pet Vitality™ from spilling off your pets paw and onto the floor.

How to Give CBD to Your Livestock AnimalsAdding Vitality-X™ to the diet of your horse, goat, or other livestock animals is simple. Because Vitality-X™ has a liquid consistency, it is easy to pour out and measure servings for your livestock animal. For horses or similar livestock animals, we recommend 25 mg of CBD once or twice a day. 25 mg of CBD is the equivalent of 3 ml (just over ½ teaspoon) of Vitality-X™ liquid.

You can then add our CBD liquid to your livestock animal’s feed, making sure to fully mix it in for consistent spread, or pour it over a treat to make CBD an integral part of your animal’s diet. Dry treats tend to work best for absorbing Vitality-X™ CBD liquid. Regardless of how you choose to add CBD to your pet’s diet, you can trust in products from Phyto Animal Health.
