What is Persuasive Writing?

Persuasive Writing expresses an opinion and attempts to convince the reader that this opinion is correct.

We use persuasive writing in these types of writing:

Essays

Speeches

Editorials

Book Reviews

Essay

An essay is a piece of writing written from an author’s point of view.

There are many different types of essays including the following:

-Literary Analysis

-Persuasive

-Research

-Reflective

Pre-writing

Getting detail down on paper, before writing.

Examples:

Word webs, charts, or free writing

Shaping the Essay

Shaping the essay is outling the paper, and including the following items: Concrete Details (CD), Commentary (CM), and your thesis statement.

First Draft

After you have prepared your ideas and written a plan/outline, you are ready to start writing your first draft.

Note the word "first". A mistake we often make is thinking

that once we have written a draft, the essay is done. Not so; the first draft is only one part of the whole writing process that leads to a finished, presentable, and hopefully excellent essay.

Final DraftFinal typed version of your

essayThis is when your essay has

been shined and polished, and it is ready to be presented.

Introduction

1st paragraph of your paper. This paragraph will include your thesis statement and attention grabber or hook.

Also, an introductory paragraph will state the main ideas of your paper.

Body Paragraph or BP

Middle Paragraph in an essay and develops or covers your point.

In your body paragraphs, you will include a topic sentence and closing statement or transition sentence.

Conclusion

Conclusion paragraph is the last paragraph in your paper.

Do NOT use Concrete Details in this paragraph.

This paragraph will sum up or resolve the main ideas discussed in the paper. In this paragraph, you will re-state your thesis statement.

Thesis Statement

A sentence with a subject and an opinion.

This statement is the last sentence in your introductory paragraph.

This statement will outline your paper and inform your reader the main ideas of your paper.

Topic Sentence

1st sentence in a body paragraph that has an opinion and subject.

This sentence will inform the reader what the paragraph will be about.

Concrete Detail

Concrete Details or CD are facts, examples, or proof within your body paragraphs that help support your main idea.

Commentary

Commentary or CM is your opinion or reflection over the main idea.

After you include a CD into your paper, you will follow it with at least two commentaries.

Chunk

A chunk is one Concrete Detail or CD and two Commentaries or CMs

Kairos

Ethos

Ethos refers to the trustworthiness or credibility of the writer or speaker.

Ethos is often conveyed through tone and style of the message and through the way the writer or speaker refers to differing views.

It can also be affected by the writer's reputation as it exists independently from the message--his or her expertise in the field, his or her previous record or integrity, and so forth.

The impact of ethos is often called the argument's 'ethical appeal' or the 'appeal from credibility.'

Pathos Pathos is often associated with emotional

appeal. But a better equivalent might be 'appeal to the audience's sympathies and imagination.‘

An appeal to pathos causes an audience not just to respond emotionally but to identify with the writer's point of view--to feel what the writer feels.

Logos Logos refers to the internal consistency of

the message--the clarity of the claim, the logic of its reasons, and the effectiveness of its supporting evidence.

The impact of logos on an audience is sometimes called the argument's logical appeal.

In this type of argument, the main tools you would use would be facts and statistics to back up your opinion.
