SCHOOL OF SCIENCEDEPARTMENT OF BIOLOGYThe Department will provide undergraduate education ina wide range of biological sciences that cover biologicalsystems at all levels of organization. It will also offerpostgraduate education for in-depth study and researchinto major areas of modern biology: animal physiology,biochemistry, biophysics, cell biology, developmentalbiology, ecology, population genetics and evolution,molecular genetics, microbiology, neurobiology andplant physiology. There will be strong emphases on allaspects of biotechnology that meet Hong Kong's eco-nomic development needs. Student population is ex-pected to grow to 400 FTE by 1996-97. The Departmentwill have an academic staff establishment of 40 by 1996-97, and appropriate administrative and technical staff aswell-equipped laboratories. A Department of Biochemis-try with about 30 staff and 300 student FTE will beestablished a year after the inauguration of the Depart-ment of Biology.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCEIn general, applicants should have appropriate highacademic and/or professional qualifications togetherwith successful, relevant experience in universities,research laboratories, and/or industry. The successfulcandidates for the posts of Departmental Head will alsobe required to demonstrate the personal qualities neces-sary to lead the department in its diverse functions andto interact strongly with industry and commerce.

SALARY AND FRINGE BENEFITSThe salary will be within the professorial range, averag-ing HK$45,820 per month (not less than HK$37,045 permonth), corresponding to approximately $70,492 perannum (and approximately $56,992 per annum) at thecurrent exchange rate of HK$7.8 = US$1.0.
