DIVISION OF FISHERIES RESEARCHMARINE LABORATORIES, HOBART, TASMANIA AUSTRALIA

THE DMSION: The CSIRO Divisions of Fisheries Research and Oceanography collectively form the CSIRO Marine Laboratories. TheDivision of Fisheries Research undertakes studies into biology, ecology and population dynamics of marine populations (both plantand animal) and supplies information for the development of management strategies for fisheries within the A.F.Z. The Divisioncurrently employs about 140 staff of whom 80 are professional research stall. Laboratories are located in Hobart, Perth andBrisbane. The Division has a well equipped charter vessel (53m) available for research.

THE PROGRAM: Within the Fish Population Dynamics Section a program is established to conduct research into the trawl fishery ofthe continental shelf and shelf slope in Southeast Australian waters. Most of the catch is obtained by otter trawling and Danishseining, with 10 species comprising the bulk of the catch. This fishery is regarded as a national resource of Australia and is managedvia a management committee.

THE JOB: The appointee will undertake research into the population dynamics of exploited fish stocks in mixed stock fisheries, anddevelop and evaluate management strategies for these fisheries. This will require both integration of information currently availablethmrough advisory and management agencies and the development of biological research projects and collection of fishery data. Theappointee will provide ongoing advice to the research and management agencies of the S.E. trawl fishery.

THE PERSON: Applicants should hold a PhD degree on equivalent qualifications in quantitative Zoology or Fisheries Biology withexperience in methods of assessment of exploited populabtions. Demonstrated mathematical ability, particularly in the developmentand application of mathematical methods and models in a biological context is essential. They should have familiarity with computerprogramming and its application to scientiic problems. Post-graduate experience in population dynamics and stock assessmentwould be an advantage.

CONDITIONS: Appointment will be for a term of 3 years with Australian Govemment Superannuation benefits available.

MORE INFORMATION: Prospective applicants are invited to telephone Dr. K. Sainsbury on (002) 206222 for further information. Program Resources, Inc. (PRI) is atthe forefront of biomedical research, paving the way for new programs and

new discoveries at the NationalCancer Institute Frederick CancerResearch Facility, Frederick, MD. Weare looking for uniquely skilled pro-fessionals to direct existinglaboratories.

PRECLINICAL EVALUATIONLABORATORYThis laboratory supports the Biologi-cal Response Modifiers Program(BRMP) for which we are developingand using animal models to predictBRM anti-tumor activity. We are usingthis information to optimize protocolsfor the use of these agents in humanclinical trials. Additionally, efforts willbe made to evaluate new agents fortheir BRM activities in animal models.

CLINICAL MONITORING AND LAKLABORATORYThis laboratory also supports theBRMP for which we generate LAKcells to be used in patients for adop-tive immunotherapy trials in patientsreceiving various BRMs (interferons, tumor necrosis factors, colony-stimulating factors, monoclonal anti-

bodies). This is an excellent oppor-tunity for a clinically oriented scientistto be involved with design andimplementation of protocols forexperimental treatment of humancancer.

The scientists we seek should have aPhD or MD degree with proven expe-rience in the areas of immunologicaltesting and animal tumor modeling.Laboratory management experienceis also desirable.PRI will provide successful candi-dates with an excellent compensationand benefits package, including relo-cation assistance.
