Hepatitis C is a leading cause of liver cancer and liver transplants. 1 About 75% of people with hepatitis C have no symptoms. 2 As a result, hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is known as the “silent killer”, with less than 10% survival rate over 5 years. 3 Liver tissue stiffness is associated with disease progression. Acoustic Radiation Force Impulse (ARFI) imaging values quantify and predict tissue stiffness. 4 Mild/No Stiffness Moderate Stiffness High Stiffness years survival rate 2.2 m/s (14.5 kPa) 1.34 m/s (5.4 kPa) Ultrasound shear-wave imaging uses ARFI imaging. It is a quick, non-invasive test that can be performed as part of a routine diagnostic ultrasound. The quantitative stiffness property of liver tissue, an indication for disease, can be obtained with 1 push of a buon. The exam is not painful for the patient and delivers objective results for the sonographer. 1 Viral Hepatitis-CDC Recommendations for Specific Populations and Seings.
