Feel India

Feel India

This retreat shares what we love most about India.... the 'real' India.....an India that must be experienced to be understood.

Feeling India involves all your senses as you gaze at the brilliant colors of the silk sari, hear the music of water splashing over stainless vessels, inhale the scent of jasmine in the early morning air, feel a cool tile floor under your bare feet, and wonder at the taste of a tea shop's steaming masala chai. Every experience of these ten days has been carefully chosen for you for its connection to the people, the land and the yoga.

immerses you in the life of towns that time passed by. You will be greeted with smiles, curiosity and gracious South Indian hospitality by those who sleep early and stir before dawn, where vegetables are still sold with hand held scales, spices are wrapped in squares of newspaper, men gather at tea shops to share newspapers and gossip, and cows are more common than cars.

Participate in local tradition; try a decorative henna tattoo, or design a kollam, the good luck charm every mother or daughter creates on the doorstep each morning. You will have time to explore the architecture, the history, the festivals, and the food. The antique and vegetable markets are a shopper's dream and a riot of color and the temples marvels of intricate stone carving, ritualistic terra cotta figures and haunting ritual chanting.

We stay clear of the tourist trail because we want you to feel the `real' India and it will be rare to see other western tourists. Discover the holy city of Rameswaram where we follow the story of Lord Ram, his wife Sita and his loyal companion Hanuman. Come with us to visit the Ramanathaswamy Temple, one of the greatest shrines of India, and participate in a traditional purification ritual alongside pilgrims from all over India.

Practice sunrise yoga and meditation on what seems to be the end of the earth and relax and swim in clear, turquoise waters along isolated white sand beaches.

Come with all the hospitality, tradition, color, beauty and romance that only locals could show you.

Jane Mason (Australian) - Yoga Instructor & Mentor

Jane's passions in life are yoga, food, travel and surf. After studying Law in Sydney, Australia, the desire to explore the world and yoga brought her to India where she fell in love with its vibrancy, strength, history, opportunities, challenges and the yoga that is evident in everyday life. She now lives in Auroville in the south of India.

Jane is qualified in Vinyasa, Hatha, Viniyoga and Prana Vashya yoga and is continuing her education in Yoga Therapy. Jane’s speciality is mentoring, developing personal practices and designing yoga sequences to the individual's needs. Her group classes emphasize the Vinyasa style

linking breath with movement; they are designed to build heat, strength, and flexibility and work with different themes, use of music, chanting, pranayama, meditation and other tools to cultivate awareness helping the student find their own edge between challenge and acceptance.

Jane takes a holistic approach to yoga and continuously explores the link between yoga, food, health and healing. She loves vegan cooking and is a raw food chef. She brings her knowledge of food to all retreats providing yummy snacks, healthy Indian cooking classes and raw food workshops.

“I remember trying yoga a few times at the local gym and not really understanding what it was all about. Then my friend convinced me to attend a yoga retreat and this short 3 day retreat was an amazing experience for me. It created an opening in my heart and mind and a desire to learn more and develop this practice. This teacher created a program and an environment that allowed the space for each student to progress at their own pace and an opportunity to really surrender to yoga. It is my aim with all of our retreats to pass on this experience to others. Whether you are starting out or deepening an established practice I am blessed to have the opportunity to help you explore yoga and your personal potential.”

Remy Quinter (Canadian) - Yoga Instructor & Mentor

Remy holds a Masters of Yoga from the Sivananda Yogasana Research Institure in India, as well as certificates from the Himalayan Yoga Institute and Agama Yoga. Remy's classes mix enthusiasm, depth, humor and vitality, incorporating Vinyasa style strength and breath synchronization during standing asanas and Yin-style holds for seated asanas. He also teaches a variety of popular workshops focusing on all aspects of yoga, including meditation, breathwork and philosophy. He runs numerous retreats during the year.

Remy is a strong proponent of adapting postures to fit the needs of his students, working positively with what a student brings to class in the moment. Remy's goal is to synthesize the best teachings from both the East and the West incorporating his study of molecular biology at the University of Sydney. In keeping with his teachers' philosophy that yoga practitioners are “lifelong students,” Remy continues studying under masters in such diverse disciplines as Aikido and transpersonal psychology.

Remy currently resides in Sydney, where he teaches regularly at The Living Room in Coogee while raising his six-year-old son and enjoys every opportunity to practice his French.

The Feel India Team

Kasha Vande, (Franco-American) - Co-ordinator & Personal Coach

While studying architecture in the tropical city of New Orleans, LA, Kasha fell in love with warm weather and has rarely ventured out of it since. She lived and worked as a Project and Event Manager in Hong Kong, Vietnam, Paris, and Abu Dhabi.

In 1998, following her French husband, she headed to Pondicherry, India where she fell in love with the culture, tradition and colonial architecture, not to mention the cuisine. She has been in Pondy for over a decade and is an energetic entrepreneur pioneering the first-in-Pondicherry all local women staffed boutique and Indo European vegetarian restaurant, Kasha

Ki Aasha. Other businesses initiated by her include a full fitness center and a beach side restaurant. She works with a local NGO supporting women and children and is proactive in the positive development of the small fishing village where she lives. Currently she is involved with the direction of a community wide event, Pondy A.R.T. which focuses on increasing public awareness of the arts as well as the social issues challenging India today.

Kasha has made her work with and support of local women her own, unique Yoga and is now often sought out by many visitors budding entrepreneurs in Pondicherry to share her personal and professional experience.

“The moment I got off the plane for the first time, I fell in love with India. I have discovered a freedom of expression, an independence and a cultural environment that has opened my heart, changed my personal values and given me an opportunity to do what I love and give back to those around me in ways I never expected. I am very excited about sharing India and its life changing effects with women from around the world through our retreats. Come and you will never be the same again.”

The AccommodationThe Saratha Villas is located in the village of Kothamanagalam, in the heart of Chettinad, a region of South India known for outstanding architecture, living heritage and famous cuisine.

The Saratha Vilas is a prime example of the luxurious mansion unique to the Chettinad region. Designed by a wealthy Tamil merchant in the early 1900's, the villa holds a silence that is perfect for inner reflection and meditation. The property, full of light, pure air and peaceful silence includes elegant rooms, spacious courtyards and coconut palm gardens providing a luxurious Yogic environment. We will practice yoga in a spacious open air shala, a grand salon under crystal chandeliers and in cool terra cotta tiled courtyards.

But the reason we really fell in love with The Saratha Vilas was because of the owners and their story. Michel and Bernard, French architects and designers, came to India regularly to source wood for one of their personal projects back in Marseille, France. Upon discovering that this wood was supplied by demolishing old Chettinad homes they came to explore the region and found themselves falling in love with the beautiful homes and villages. Moving to Chettinad after 3 years of negotiation with the owner of this historical gem, they painstakingly and lovingly restored it with a staff of 100 local workers into an eight room boutique hotel in less than one year. Their passion for this region, this villa and their guests is evident in every exquisite detail of their hotel and by their continued efforts in historic preservation of the area. In fact, they are working diligently towards getting Chettinad listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
