January - April 2018

On 19th January, 2018 the Festival of Peace was held in St. Thomas' Church, Howrah. The festival was organised by Billy Graham Evangelistic Association (BGEA) in association with the Diocese of Calcutta, CNI and Churches in and around Howrah. It was an all day event with participation of Churches from Howrah in presentation of Christian hymns and choreography. Rev. Dr. Robert Cunville shared the Word of God and Rev. Dr. Subrata Sarkar interpreted the message. The mission of the Festival of Peace is to provide an opportunity for children, youth, and adults of Howrah area to gather in celebration of peace and to foster a growing sense of community, through a variety of experiences including song and dance and the sharing of the Word of God.

FESTIVAL OF PEACE

The apostle Paul compares the

body before resurrection to a seed,

and the body after resurrection to

the plant that emerges from that

seed. He says in his First Letter to

the Corinthians :“What you plant is a bare seed

….not the full‐bodied plant….When

the body is buried, it is mortal; when

raised, it will be immortal. When

buried, it is ugly and weak; when

raised, it will be beautiful and

strong. When buried, it is a physical

body; when raised, it will be a

spiritual body.” [1 Corinthians

15:37, 42‐44]

In the same letter Paul says that we

will share in the resurrection of

Jesus. He writes:“The truth is that Christ has been

raised from death, as the guarantee

that those who sleep in death will

also be raised. For just as death

came by means of a man, in the

same way the rising from death

comes by means of a man. For just

as all people die because of their

union with Adam, in the same way

all will be raised to life because of

their union with Christ…. Just as we

wear the likeness of the manmade

of earth, so we will wear the

likeness of the Man from heaven.”

[1 Corinthians 15:20-22,49]However, Paul tells us something

more. He tells us that we don't

have to wait until we die to share in

the Risen life and the Risen power

of Jesus. We can do it right now. All

we have to do is open our heart to

Him. Let me illustrate with a true story of

a man who was a victim of cancer

who until he died in 1977, always

believing that his illness was a

precious gift from God. Shortly

before his death he wrote: “Many things upon which i placed

importance in the past seem so

trivial now. They just don't seem to

matter anymore….Time has become precious. God

has become so real….Ian feel His

power – it's always there. If feel that

God has answered my prayers.”He concluded by saying that he

always knew God loved him, but he

had no idea God loved him so much. This is a beautiful example of the

power of the Risen Jesus at work in

someone's life today. This man

literally died and rose spiritually. And so we don't have to wait until

we die to share in the Risen life and

Risen power of Jesus. We can share

in it right now, at this moment. How? Each time we love again after

having our love rejected, we share

in the power of the Resurrection.

Each time we trust again after

having our trust betrayed, we share

in the Resurrection. Each time we

fail and try again, we share in the

Resurrection. Each time we hope

again after having our hope

smashed into pieces, we share in

the Resurrection. Each time we

pick up the pieces, wipe our tears,

face the sun, and start again, we

s h a r e i n t h e p o w e r o f t h e

Resurrection. The message of Easter is that

nothing can destroy us anymore –

not pain, not sin, not rejection, not

death. The message of Easter is that Christ

has conquered death and gone

beyond, and that we too can

conquer, if we put our faith in Him.

That’s what the Resurrection is all

about. That’s what we celebrate

this today. It’s the Good News that

every Good Friday now has an

Easter Sunday. It’s the Good News

that we don’t have to wait until

death to share in the resurrection.

We can begin to do it right now, in

this life, at this moment. All we

have to do is open our hearts to the

grace that Jesus won for us on the

first Easter Sunday, nearly 2018

years ago.

CONFIRMATION IN THE DIOCESE OF CALCUTTA is absolute and total. Unlike the commitments we make, God’s commitment to us is everlasting and He will not break His promise. He has kept His promise to us, even though there are times when we have disregarded God, ignored His love for us and rebelled against those who love us.If you have any doubts about God's commitment to you, then look at the cross on the altar. There on the cross Jesus, the suffering, dying Jesus, gave His own life because of His commitment to all of us. He endured the cross because he loves and wants to enjoy eternal life. The Service concluded with fellowship and tea.

thOn 11 February, 2018 the Annual Sunday School Teaching Rally was organised by the Diocesan Sunday School Committee at St. John's Diocesan, Girl's Higher Secondary School from 10:30 am onwards. The theme for the rally was “Joy with Jesus”. Mr. Amitava Paul, Secretary of the Sunday School Committee co-ordinated the rally. Children were divided into different age groups and were giving teachings through lessons, singing, hand work etc. In the concluding programme was held at St. Mary's Church, the children of the respective classes presented what they had learnt, through a skit.Rev Priscilla Papiya Durairaj, Associate Presbyter of St. James' Church shared a message with the children which was interactive about Jesus being the Prince of Peace.

Mrs. Carolyn Lionel, Principal, St. John's Diocesan Girls' Higher Secondary School shared her joy to be present and see the Sunday School children participating together and listening to God's Word. Mrs. Lionel said that there are many children who do not get the opportunity to attend Sunday School and it is a privilege for those who are able to attend. She thanked the Sunday School Committee for putting in the hard work and for the success of the programme. Just like when we are in regular school what we learn and put into practice; likewise in Sunday School too, the children should not forget God's Word and

On January 6, 2018, Epiphany Day was celebrated at Oxford Mission, Behala with a Sung Eucharist on the Mission House Lawn. The Service was conducted by The Rt. Rev. Ashoke Biswas, Bishop of Calcutta, CNI and Chairman, Oxford Mission Trust Association. The Rt. Rev. Collin Theodore, former Bishop of Rajasthan Diocese, CNI and a senior member of the “Delhi Brotherhood of the Ascended Christ” joined Bishop Ashoke in the Celebration of the Holy Eucharist. The Rev Paritosh Canning shared God's Word. He said “the wise men or magi were not Jews, they may have been priests of a pagan eastern religion. It is interesting that God revealed the birth of the “newborn king of the Jews” to men who were not Jews. We might have expected God to reveal the birth of Jesus to his own Jewish people, but no, it was to people of a different religion and race that God revealed the birth of Jesus. God chose to reveal the birth of Jesus to Gentiles. Jesus came to save the whole world and not just His own Jewish Chosen People, God in His mercy chose to reveal the birth of Jesus “to all the nations.”The visit of the Magi is in Matthew's Gospel but Luke makes the same point in

a different way. In Luke a vision of angels announced the birth of Jesus to shepherds (Luke 2:8-14). The shepherds were Jews but they were the lowest in society at that time. Of course everyone has equal dignity before God but society does not often reflect God's value of the human person and so the poor shepherds were away down there. But God chose them to be the first to hear the Good News of Jesus' birth in Luke. Then in the temple Simeon prophesied that Jesus would be “a light for revelation to the Gentiles and for glory to your people Israel.” (Luke 2:32).So Simeon was saying Jesus would be light to the non-Jews, us Gentiles, and glory for Israel. Both Matthew and Luke each show in different ways that at the birth of Jesus God revealed that this baby was for the salvation of the whole world.”Bishop Ashoke in his address gave thanks to God for the founding fathers and made an appeal to the people of Behala to come forward with renewed enthusiasm to support Oxford Mission to continue the work of imparting education for native Christian boys. Trustees of OMTA, a large number of Priests, guests, invitees, staff members and Oxford Mission boys- both past and present participated in the Festival.

Rev Paritosh Canning, Vice-President, Diocese of Calcutta, CNI, invited guest and all members gathered together to give thanks and praise for God's faithfulness.Speaking on Epiphany Bishop said God led the Magi to see and spiritually perceive what was really being communicated what was happening in the heavens, to make spiritual judgments about what they saw, and to act on what they were discerning. Perhaps the “overwhelming joy” they experienced when they reached their destination where the Christ child lay;

was the joy that comes when the growing hope within them and their obedience to that hope g a v e w a y t o t h e attainment of a vision of Christ, which they believed in and hoped for beforehand (John 20:29; Hebrews 11:1-2; 1 John 3:2).Today God continues to open our hearts and minds to spiritually perceive, receive, worship, and serve Him. This Epiphany story continues to happen every day in our lives, in our congregations and our communities. Let us be to each other and to people of

this part of the city mature disciples who can spiritually nurture, guide, and encourage others in their pilgrimage of faith and hope. The celebration came to a close with fellowship and light refreshments for all present.

(John 4:23).Worshiping "in Spirit" means that we mean it; that we are worshiping inside out, not just going through the motions.Worshiping "in Truth" means that we are worshiping the true God and not some idol we have created. And it means we are being truthful with our words and thoughts that we bring to worship; we are

not trying to put on a religious act to impress someone.Bishop was pleased to note that both these forms of worship were witnesssed during the service and his prayer was, not only would i t continue in this congregation but others would be inspired as well.
