Each side of the tool box represents Knowledge, Values, Skills and Theories

The top of the box and the handle represent SELFThe tool box is important to me because I

currently work with apprentices in the construction industry and it is imperative that they take their tool box to every single work site they go to.

The tools are used as part of their job and are imperative to their performance.

If you don’t have the tools to build a house – you can’t even begin!

Why the Tool Box as a Metaphor?

ToolsAll of these things that I have mentioned represent the tools that will be in my tool box. They will be the tools that I use with social work

practiceThey will evolve and change over time and update

as neededYou need to look after your tools to make sure that

they work, are safe and aren’t out of date.It is important to keep the tools in the tool box so

you can draw upon and use them as necessary given any circumstance.

SELF

Page 13: Personal Practice Framework

The handle and the top of the box represents the self (myself)

It is what holds the tool box in tact and makes it easier to transport and take from job to job

It encompasses all 4 sides of the tool boxIt provides protection to all the tool inside the

boxSelf care is imperative in my practice

framework and by ensuring that I take care of myself, my tools will also be taken care of

Page 14: Personal Practice Framework

The tool box (practice framework) can be adapted and used in any social work setting

It is important to know that my practice framework is a work in progress and will be changing along with my experiences

I will carry my tool box with me where ever I go
