can be a significant act. Because of this, the variety of candle rituals performed today are both the result of thousands of years of tradition as well as the innovation of many souls. It is just as appropriate to invent your own rituals as it is to borrow those used by others. Candles, both those assigned special meaning and the simple white variety, can be used in rituals of healing, gathering, wishing, or any type of ritual your mind can conceive. The ritual may be easy or as complicated as you want. A good beginning point is choosing a candle of an appropriate color. Many people believe that white candles bring truth, green money, pink love, purple ambition, orange attraction, and red strength, but you may choose any color that you find meaningful. A simple wishing ritual is similar to the birthday ritual: light your candle and spend some time concentrating both on its flame and what you desire. Look into the flame and visualize the end result until you believe in its truth. Then gratefully and gently extinguish the flame. A longer ritual involves anointing the candle with oil and making seven notches in the wax. Place the candle in a sturdy holder and light it. Concentrate on a goal, a desire, or a truth as the candle burns down one notch. Do this every night until the candle has burned out. You can also invent new rituals for yourself with a little

of bullets. Bullets are piercing, penetrating, loud and when fired, very dangerous. Some associations we explored were explosive anger, appropriate use of power, effective action. Do the words I use in anger often penetrate the hearts of those around me as though they were bullets? ancient metaphorical outline for inner transformation, gold represents the noblest of elements; the dark material that we have brought forth from the unconscious layers of our psyche and purified through “cooking in the well-sealed vessel.” By holding this rising unconscious content firmly in awareness through meditation, active imagination or dreamwork, we be-gin the process of allowing the power trapped by denial within our shadow to be freed and brought into the light of con-sciousness.
The first stage is encountering the personal shadow, the prima materia. Here we ac-knowledge all the repressed experiences of our personal life history. In the next stage, the nigredo or “the blackening,” we en-counter the non-personal, ancestral layer, the collective shadow common to us all. The next stage is the albedo or “the whit-ening” where the prima materia, after be-ing washed by “dew” or tears, is pulver-ized again and again, through many layers, eventually turning into pure silver. One of the final stages is “the yellowing” when the silver is ultimately sacrificed in order for it to change into gold.
Therefore, from an alchemical point of view, when the symbol of gold shows up,
our psyche has been cooked, burned, pul-verized, washed with tears and ultimately transformed into something brilliant and precious. The gold represents all of our difficult and focused inner work. Craig Chalquist, sums this up in his article, Cooking for the Collective Unconscious: An Alchemically Enlivened Recipe, “We know the Self, a conscious-unconscious entity, can enfold into awareness raw prod-ucts of the psyche. For instance, it would be much easier to trade gold for goods with a remote primitive tribe than to try and convince the natives that your pa-per $100 bill is really worth anything. Since gold is universally recognized as precious, it appears in our dreams so that we can be reminded of our inherent value, our golden talents and abilities. Whatever object appears as gold in the dream holds the clue to where the treasure is buried.

Dance the drumming of the tribe, the patter of the rain.
