Everyone had a negativecomment to make and felt

that the project should bescrapped since the

In spite of his handicapWashington was neverdiscouraged and stillhad a burning desire to

of his friends, butthey were too

    daunted by the task

As he lay on his bed in his hospitalroom, with the sunlight

streaming through the windows,a gentle breeze blew the flimsywhite curtains apart and he was

able to see the sky and the topsof the trees outside for just amoment.

It seemed that there was a messagefor him not to give up. Suddenlyan idea hit him. All he could dowas move one finger and hedecided to make the best use of

it. By moving this, he slowlydeveloped a code ofcommunication with his wife.

He touched his wife's arm withthat finger, indicating to her

that he wanted her to call theengineers again. Then heused the same method of

tapping her arm to tell theengineers what to do. Itseemed foolish but the project

    was under way again.

small in comparisonto what many others

    have to face.
