2.4: Writing Equations of Lines
Goals
• Writing Linear Equations

• Intercepts
• Slope
• Points on the line
• Writing Direct Equations
– Understanding rates of change that are related to
each other

Slope-Intercept Form
Given the slope m and y-intercept b, use the
equation: y=mx+b
E.g.,1: My y-intercept is 50 and the slope is 2.
E.g., 2: Slope is 3/2, has points (-2, -4) and (2, 2).
E.g., 3: Perpendicular and parallel to y=2x-3

Point-Slope Form
Given:
(a)Slope m and a point (x1,y1), OR
(b)Two points (x1,y1), (x2,y2)
E.g., 4: m=2 and point (2,3)
E.g., 5: points (2,1), (-1,-2)

Direct Variation
Note 1: Constant k can be a fraction
Note 2: The y-intercept is zero

2.5: Correlation and Best-Fitting Lines
a.k.a. some very useful applications
Goals
• Scatter Plots and Correlation
– Plotting Data on Graph, Seeing if the data is
related.
• Approximating Best-Fitting Lines
– Give an equation that roughly fits the data.

Approximate a Line of Best Fit Method One:
1. Draw Scatter Plot
2. Sketch a line that “most
follows the pattern”.
3. Choose two points on
this line.
4. Find an equation using
those two points.
Method Two:
1. Draw Scatter Plot
2. Pick two points that
“most represent the
data”.
3. Find an equation using
those two points.
Note: This is not THE line of best fit, but a guess of that line.

2.6: Linear Inequalities in Two Variables
Goals
• Graphing Linear Inequalities
– Scaling inequalities up to 2-dimensions
• Using Linear Inequalities in Real Life
– Applications and such

Graphing
An inequality in two variables graphs ½ of a plane:
1. Graph the boundary line. Use solid line only if
equation has “equal to” aspect, else dash the
line.
2. Test points above and/or below the line. Shade
if test point is a solution.
E.g.,1: y>2
E.g., 2: y=2x
