acceptance of Priest-In-Charge at St. Mark’s. Following the service

and BEFORE we cross the street for the quad church picnic, we’ll have cake in

Visiting the Hospital: A little bit of a glow. Steve Kurtz Casper Journal 6/9/16 My father was in the hospital too many times and spent too much time there in his last years. My stepmother was there every step of the way, taking care of him and being his healthcare advocate. I learned a lot from Arlene about caring for people and I got the feel for the culture of the hospital. It isn’t a fun place and there are lots of times when patients are alone. I joined the hospital visitors group at my church, people who visit those from our church and those in our denomination from out of town, and others who request a visit. We are trained as to the health and safety issues of hospital visitation and the privacy issues as well. These make it serious business. The chaplains at Wyoming Medical Center and clergy from local churches do an excellent job of visitation and helping out patients who need help. But visiting the hospital and shut ins is a big job and lay visitors play a big role in caring for those who are ill. I have met lots of lay visitors as well as clergy making their rounds at the hospital from a number of churches in the community. Visiting the hospital and praying for people has been an experience of personal growth for me. I don’t pray out loud very well, and have to have my prayer written out. I have to gather myself before I go in a patient’s room, and I have to every time convince myself that I have some sort of authority and am a good enough person to go pray for somebody else. But I survive and succeed and the rewards are often great. You can see how much most patients appreciate that you as a lay person are there for them, and if it helps them heal, and I know it does, it is worth it. Libby has joined me in the last several years. She is a natural at this, and it is much easier with her along. We have our prayer on a card and if the person we visit is off for a test or sleeping we leave the card for them. We have had some feel good ex-periences. We have had people with a family member in the same room as one we visit who have asked us to come back and pray for their relative. We have met friends in the hall who asked for a prayer. I prayed for a friend who is a Methodist. I told him this was an Episcopal prayer. He said if I said it twice it would probably be good enough. Most everyone appreciates a prayer. Once in a while someone doesn’t so we honor their wishes. Not every story ends well at the hospital and hospital visiting takes its toll on you. It takes a special person to stay with this for a long time and lay visitors and clergy are good at supporting each other as well as those they visit. This story isn’t about me. It is really about the lay visitors, who do this job well, with-out any notoriety whatsoever; visiting and taking communion and praying for those at the hospital and those who are shut in at home or in nursing homes. My mother, Marilyn, often smiled sheepishly when she said she was going to church

on Sunday to get her halo adjusted. I have never imagined that I was going to get

halo status in this or any other lifetime. But it is something to think about. Maybe the

hospital visitors have a little bit of a glow about them.

Jesus tells us to feed his sheep. This is a command that St. Mark’s has always taken seriously and joyfully. There are many different ways to an-swer this call. We have always been generous sharing our money, and many of us volunteer our time and talent to help others both inside and outside our church community.

Over the years we have also sponsored a food closet, a free medical clin-ic, the Samaritan Counseling Center, Cross Roads Kitchen and a clothes closet just to name a few. But over time each of these has given way to our own changing lives and the changing needs of the community around us. What each of these ministries has in common is that they ask us as the community of St. Mark’s to do hands on work. To meet and get to know the people we hope to serve and to gratefully receive the gifts they have to offer us in return..

Once again it is time to re-envision what new and exciting ways we can reach out to others. So here is an invitation to gather together in the Guild Room at 7pm, Thursday, August 18 to brain storm and begin to plan how we can once again follow Jesus’ command to feed his sheep.

My name is Elisa Jones and I am the new office manager. I would like to tell you a little bit about myself. I have grown up in Casper I would say all of my life and I love it here. I love the outdoors and the openness here in Wyoming. I’m into hiking, camping, hunting and I love my motorcycle. My kids are a number one for me as we lost their dad about 3 1/2 years ago. So we never take something for granted. I have 3 wonderful children, Kyler age 20, moved out and is getting married next summer. Kenzie age 17, is a senior this year and has an amazing 5 month old baby. My baby Liam, 15 1/2, does enduro racing at Valentine speedway in Glenrock. Now that my children are more grown up I’m excited to be able to ride my motorcycle more often and go out into the real world and have adult conversations :-) Please at anytime come by the office and intro-duce yourself to me. I won’t always remember your name right away but after a couple times I promise I will get better.

Good News from Cross Roads Kitchen On behalf of Casper Cross Roads Ministries, Inc., or much better known as Cross Roads Kitchen, I am eager to share a brief update as our program prepares to return to full operation. Our board, with three new members, has worked hard to organize and renew our commitment to the women in need in Casper. They include Meganne Acres, Nancy Dingman, Robert Johnson, Cindy King, Sam Knight, Mark Mathern and Jill Smylie. We are excited to introduce our new program director Tamara MacNaughton. Tamara is very active in Casper, serving both personally and professionally. Since her hire this spring she has worked diligently to secure a new residence for the program. We will be housed on the Life Steps Campus, conveniently located on the bus route, home to other non-profits, and provider of living arrangements for many of the women we seek to serve. She has great vision, passion and skills to benefit Cross Roads Kitchen’s mission to build community with and support women of our area financially, nutritionally and spiritually. We are grateful for the generosity and support of our program over the years by the parishioners of St. Mark’s. Our move should be complete in August and more information will continue including opportunities to serve as meal providers and meet Tamara! Blessings and Thanksgivings, Cindy King President

Greetings Sisters and Brothers, Our 3rd time together to continue the conversation around church formation and our lives in the strong and unshakable Kingdom of God is scheduled for August 3rd. In the first 2 sessions we have explored St. Mark’s history and the gifts of Apostle, Prophet, Evangelist, Shepherd and Teacher of the ordained ministers, past and present. On August 3 we will continue exploring what it is God is planning to unveil for us, looking at the 5 ministries as given to us by Paul in Ephesians 4:11-13 and defining what those 5 gifts mean for us today. If you have been able to attend the 1st two meetings, thank you, for the rich and bountiful discussions we have had. I look forward to the return-ing folks on August 3, as we welcome new people whose schedule will allow them to join us. We will continue to explore what God is going to reveal for St. Marks and its life and mission in the world. See you on August 3 at 6:30 pm in the parish hall. Peace and blessings, Rev. THANKS TO PARISH FROM FOUNDATION The continued generosity of the parish with contributions to St. Mark's

Foundation for special projects is much appreciated.

Parishioners gave over $1,300 to support the work of the Foundation

as our celebration of St. Mark's Day on Sunday, April 25.i

At our May 23 meeting, the Foundation awarded a grant of $1,000 to

support the Vacation Bible School in August that St. Mark's will be

doing in conjunction with our neighbor church of Our Saviour's Lutheran.

The Foundation's next meeting will be Tuesday, August 30 at 7 p.m. at the

church. We are blessed to be a blessing.

MARY BARNES -

CELEBRATING 100 YEARS During her 90 years as a continu-

ous member at St. Mark's, Mary Barnes,

who will soon be celebrating her 100th

birthday, has been witness to much of the

church's history.

“Have I ever seen changes at St.

Mark's!” she said during a recent inter-

view. Those changes included rectors

coming and going and Mary knew every

single one of St. Mark's rectors whose

pictures hang in the church foyer.

As a lifelong dedicated Episcopalian, she took all the changes in stride. “I love the church,” she said and her devotion was evident in the more than 20 years she taught Sunday school and also served as an usher with her husband, Tom, along with other church activi-ties. Both the Barnes' sons, Mark and Loring (now deceased) also attended St. Mark's. “I think our church is so beautiful,” she said. She liked the 8 a.m. Service but thinks the 9 a.m. schedule works well. The beautiful baby grand piano in St. Mark's sanctuary was a gift from Mary and her sisters, Patricia and Fran. Mary was born Oct. 1, 1916 in Kansas City, to Fred and Angelina Austin, the oldest of three daughters. Her sisters, Patricia, born in 1918, and Frances, born in 1924, are now deceased. The family moved to Casper in 1926. Her father worked for a coffee company based in Denver and his territory included Wyo-ming, Nebraska and Montana. Mary attended the original Park school until 7th grade when she went to McKinley. She graduated from Natrona County High School in 1936.and then went to work for her father in his coffee business. Incidentally, coffee continue to be the family's beverage of choice, and in St. Mark's kitchen, one of the coffee makers bears the name of Mary's sister, Fran Busby, whose gift it was. Mary and Tom Barnes were married Feb. 21, 1941 at St. Mark's. Tom passed away Feb. 8 2011, just 13 days before what would have been their 70th anniversary. As for her gift of longevity, Mary says her family genes played a role as her grandfather lived to be 96. But the real secret she says is eating well and exercise. “I like just about everything,” she said. She also takes a daily walk, using her walker, and accom-panied by her son. For many years, she was an avid bridge player, belonging to two bridge clubs. Now she enjoys television, especially westerns in-cluding “Gunsmoke.” Mary lives in her home on South Wilson from June until Sep-tember with her son, Mark, with the remainder of the year spent in League City, Texas with Mark and his wife. She has three grandchildren, six great grandchildren, one

great great grandchild and another on the way along with other ex-

tended family members.

Mary is a cherished member of St. Mark's church family and

we all wish her our very best wishes on her 100th birthday. She will

be honored at a special reception and party at St. Mark's on Sun-

day, August 7, following the 9 a.m. Service.
