“In those days people did what was right in their own eyes.”

Need for a unified Israel arose when leadership became unstable and people began to lose sight of God’s message

Israelites had mixed feelings about the subject with the Judges denouncing idea supported by the majority, calling it a means of sewing “seeds of destruction.”

Samuel was born to Hannah who, grateful for the gift of a child in her barren state, offers her son to God as a Nazarite

Samuel is raised by Eli at the shrine of Shiloh, and while residing there is called by God a total of four times during a single night

Only the final time does he attribute the voice to God, and only then does God reveal Samuel’s role as a prophet

The Israelites, still in search of a leader, demand that Samuel choose one

Samuel then becomes the “Anointer of Kings” to oblige the people

Saul is appointed by Samuel and is crowned King, uniting the many tribes into a unified Nation

When king, Saul wins a great victory for Israel against the Ammonites

Samuel then warns him and the people that the key to true success is faithfulness to God

Yet, Saul goes on to disobey God’s law two times 1. Offers a sacrifice instead of waiting for Samuel 2. After a battle, Saul takes the enemy king and

the best livestock As spoils of war when he was suppose to

destroy them for God Because of Saul’s failure to follow God’s

commandments and his inconsistency, Samuel declares that he will be rejected as king by God.

God leads Samuel to Bethlehem, where he meets Jesse’s sons

Samuel chooses the youngest son, David, and secretly anoints him as king. David will not be publicly declared as king until later.

There are two biblical stories where Saul meets David David plays the harp for him to lighten his mood David prevails against the Philistine giant with

just one sling shot In both stories, Saul likes David and

decides to keep him at court

David’s popularity caused Saul to become insecure and jealous, leading him to attempt to kill David.

Saul’s son, Jonathan, and his daughter, Michal (David’s wife), help David escape his murderous trap

David leaves the court as a fugitive, knowing that he is God’s true choice to be king

God is no longer with Saul, so all of his actions go wrong Tries to kill David two more times The people start to love David even more Saul’s children give their loyalty to David, and

realizes he cannot prevent David from becoming king

David flees to the shrine at Nob, where he tells the priest that he is on an errand for Saul so he can get some food

The priest gives him both food and the sword of Goliath. Saul is outraged when he finds out and orders for the entire city of Nob to be destroyed

The only survivor is the priest’s son. David reveals his guilt to him, and the son offers him protection

Loyal to his people, David rescues an Israelite town from the Philistines

David, his followers, and troops flee to the desert, where David takes refuge in a cave

Saul finds David in the cave but falls asleep

David had the opportunity to kill him, but cuts off a piece of his cloak and leaves him sleeping

When Saul awakes, David tells him he means know harm and shows Saul the piece of his cloak, explaining that he could have killed him but chose not to

Saul then realizes how righteous David is and that he deserves to be the king

David promise’s he will never harm Saul’s descendents even though Saul tries to destroy him

Despite David’s human failings, God still chose him to fulfill his works

David encounters a herdsman who hasn’t paid up and fights with him

He runs into the herdsman’s wife who tries to calm him down so he does not destroy anything

David ends up marrying her

The Philistines offer David to stay with them

They end up distrusting him and send him and his troops back

Saul kills himself because he does not want to be captured by the Philistines

David is told of Saul’s death at the hands of a soldier

Saul had a soldier kill him to escape capture.

David puts the soldier who killed Saul to death

David becomes King of Israel at the age of 30 after Abner fails to have Ishbaal take over.

David defeats the Philistines David takes over Jerusalem and makes it

his capital Holy City of Jews, Muslims, and Christians

Murder and betrayal dot the beginnings of David’s reign

Abner is killed by Joab, a general of David Revenge because Abner killed Joabs brother

Ishbaal is killed by people trying to remove David’s competition David puts killers to death

David dances and rejoices when the Ark is brought to Jerusalem

Michal says he looks foolish David didn’t care about who saw him

dancing knowing that God is more important than others opinions

Michal and David never bear a child

Page 18: Period 7 group 1

David wishes to create a house for the Ark

Nathan Prophet who predicts David will have a royal

dynasty Tells David not to build a house for the Ark,

his dynasty will be the house “House” of David

Page 19: Period 7 group 1

David stays home from battle and has an affair with a married woman.

He doesn’t feel guilty, but when he finds out that Bathsheba is pregnant with his child, he worries that people will find out.

He covers up the affair by having her husband Ulriah, who is a soldier on the battlefront, slain by having his general place Ulriah where he will be killed in battle.

David then marries Bethsheba. His sins show that he was not a perfect king

and that he many flaws.

With the help of Nathan the prophet, David confronts his sins.

Nathan tells David a parable that helps him recognize his sins, and he repents.

However, Nathan prophesizes that there will be much grief and trouble in David’s family.

The message of David’s sinful behavior is that God works through limited and sinful people, and that He brings about the divine purposes even through our flaws and weaknesses.

David has many sons by various wives. The family is wrecked by rivalries, incest,

murders, and rebellions among the sons. Amnon, David’s firstborn son and heir, is

killed by his half brother, Absalom. Absalom plots to take over the kingdom.

He attracts followers, leaves Jerusalum, and declares himself king.

Even though Absalom betrayed him, David still loved him and made sure he was safe in battle. He mourns when he dies.

David becomes king again and tries to reconcile the tribes

By the end of his reign, Israel is a strong nation.

David’s legacy- Despite his flaws, David is viewed as a

model king, specifically because of his devotion to God and his family

God’s promise to David that his royal line would endure forever brought hope to later Jews and was fulfilled by the coming of Jesus
