Perfume History

The art of perfumery has been known in western Europe ever since 1221.

•In eastern Europe in 1370, the Hungarians produced a perfume made of scented oils blended in an alcohol solution at the command of Queen Elizabeth of Hungary. This is best known as Hungary Water.

•The art of perfumery prospered in Renaissance Italy, and in the 16th century, Italian refinements were taken to France.

Perfume History•Thanks to Rene, France quickly became one of

the European centers of perfume and cosmetic manufacturing.

Cultivation of flowers for their perfume essence, which had begun in the 14th century, grew into a major industry in the south of France.

•Between the 16th and 17th century, perfumes were used primarily by the wealthy to mask body odors resulting from infrequent bathing. Partly due to this patronage, the perfume industry was created.

Notes of Perfume•The Head Note (the start) : is the first note

to be inhaled and give the starting olfactory sensation. It is generally the one we smell when opening the perfume bottle.

•The Heart Note (the bouquet) : is inhaled afterwards and characterizes the perfume with its imposing scents.

•The Back Note ( the wake) : is the one that remains for the longest time - even for hours - and that which we remember most.

Choosing a good perfume

What is a good perfume?•A perfume is said to be "good" when

the person wearing it is pleased by its smell which is also accepted by those around her. Anything else is a matter of personal taste.

Page 40: Perfume Culture. Perfume The word perfume is taken from the Latin expression "per fumum", which means a smell obtained “through smoke”.

Choosing a good perfume

How to buy perfume Deciding upon a perfume is often a difficult

task. The ideal way would be to have the opportunity to use a sample for some hours, even some days, because a perfume changes after being applied on the skin. It must be allowed to reveal its deeper note which will remain for the whole day.

Page 41: Perfume Culture. Perfume The word perfume is taken from the Latin expression "per fumum", which means a smell obtained “through smoke”.

Using a perfume

How to keep good perfume A good perfume has to be well filtered and

stocked in a correct way. There are four enemies to perfumes: time, light, air and heat. They must therefore be kept in their box, upside down, in a cool place. When well protected, certain perfumes can be preserved for many years.

Page 42: Perfume Culture. Perfume The word perfume is taken from the Latin expression "per fumum", which means a smell obtained “through smoke”.

Using a perfume

Tips:•Do not use many perfumes at the same

time.•Perfume smells differently from one

person to another. Each person has a personal smell which depends on his skin nature, his food habits, etc… A perfume that is liked by one person does not necessarily suit another one.

Page 43: Perfume Culture. Perfume The word perfume is taken from the Latin expression "per fumum", which means a smell obtained “through smoke”.

Using a perfume

Tips:The skin is the best place for perfumes

but certain body parts are more appropriate than others because a perfume needs heat to release all of its scents.

Thus, on the veins is best on the elbow bend or the neck pit, behind the knees or on the ankles, and the nape of the neck are very good places for a fragant release of the scent.
