Director’s Welcome“The problem is not that there are problems. The problem is expecting otherwise and thinking that having problems is a problem.” —Theodore Isaac Rubin

When deciding upon a Drama for Pickwick Player’s fall production I was presented with David & Lisa and immediately fell in love with the story. I felt it would be a unique story for you the audience, as well as a production that would present a unique learning opportunity for everyone involved. Theodore Isaac Rubin, a past president of the American Institute for Psychoanalysis wrote a short story based on his research entitled Lisa & David. The characters were so richly presented that in 1962 Frank Perry made the acclaimed film David & Lisa. David & Lisa earned Frank Perry a nomination for the 1962 Academy Award for Directing and Eleanor Perry for her Screenplay. The play followed shortly in 1967. James Reach uses the screenplay by Perry and has utilized the stage to create another level of depth to the story. Later the film was remade by Oprah Winfrey in 1998. It starred Lukas Haas as David, Brittany Murphy as Lisa and Sidney Poitier as Dr. Swinford. The story, though set upon the background of the 1960’s, is timeless. Classic in telling, but poignant in its message.

This production has been wonderful to work on. Each Cast member dove into their role head on, creating unique and wonderful characters to explore. Yet, as some of you may know already...

Pickwick Players exceeds in excellence when it comes to education in theatre and I was pleased to work with this incredible group of dedicated actors. All of the actors are incredible... but these youth have really taken their roles to heart, dedicating time to researching the era and the characters and overall just bringing great life and depth to each role. Parents, I thank you for encouraging Arts in your family and the community. If you and/or your youth are sitting in the audience today looking for a great group to become part of, I highly recommend looking into taking a class with Pickwick Players or becoming involved with our next production.

Lastly, my crew has been tremendous! All incredibly driven and helpful. Thank you!

It goes without saying... none of this would be possible without my left... and right hands, Sandie & Cam. I cannot thank you both enough.

Thanks to you for being here and supporting local theatre. We hope you enjoy the show!

Artistic Director’s NoteWelcome to Pickwick Players’ seventh production here at Moxie Theatre.

This has definitely been a year of growth for us. Our focus in the past has been full-scale musicals with an emphasis on youth involvement. Last year at this time, though, we hit the ground running with our mentorship show of Snoopy!!! and just kept going nonstop. While we have always worked closely with our youth, the mentorship project allowed us to work one-on-one developing characters and even learning from the youth ourselves! After our joint show of Taffeta Christmas with OnStage Playhouse, we produced our first non-musical, The Crucible, in the early spring. From there, we went back to our standard, full-scale musical with the highly successful Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. We then ventured into our first all-youth production, Seussical Jr. It was in these last two productions that we started involving our youth more behind the scenes with intern choreographer, producer, costumer, and set designer.

For this fall slot, we wanted something different. In our Season Development Committee comprised of directors, technical designers, youth, actors, and members of the Pickwick Board, we considered many options: asking for director submissions, going with another sure hit of a full-scale musical, a Neil Simon comedy… but we wanted something that would challenge our youth. When I chatted with Geoffrey Cox about some options we were considering, it didn’t take us long to agree that David & Lisa was the perfect choice. Coming up next, we hope you’ll join us in just one month for Martinis ‘n’ Mistletoe here at Moxie Theatre.

Beyond our regular season, we have also had great success with our overnight events, Summer Conservatory, audition workshops, and Glee Workshop occurring right now! Watch for Glee Workshop performances in December. Additionally, we recently added a new position to our Board of Directors: Youth Ambassador. We see this as just the beginning of leadership opportunities for youth at Pickwick Players.

Student Director/Stage Manager’s Note When I auditioned for David & Lisa, it was just that—an audition. I would either get the role or not, and that would be that. Instead, Pickwick Players offered me a spot on the creative team, serving as Student Director. I saw this as an opportunity to experience theatre from a new perspective. Every aspect of theatre is exciting to me, so I was thrilled to be a part of this production. As it turns out, working with Geoffrey and Sandie has given me both fresh insight on the creative process and much respect for directors and the amount of work and detail they put into a production. Thanks Pickwick Players for providing this experience and offering a unique perspective for a student actor.
