1Protocol Support
Introduction
The Performer supports over 600 protocols and their variants. It provides a large number of analysis and filters for the protocols. Using the Capture, Analysis and Traffic Generator applications, as well as the capabilities of other applications (such as the Cellular Consultants), you can reach a high level of flexibility in processing various types of data over the lines you are working with.
Protocol Configuration
To efficiently decode protocols on the systems you are testing and to display captured data correctly, you must specify the appropriate Starting Protocol to be used. For instance for ATM lines you should choose ATM SAR. If you are using LAN the starting protocol should be Ethernet. For WAN your selection should match the line.
The Starting Protocol is defined by using the Protocol tab in the Configuration Window in the Capture application.
Apart from defining the Starting Protocol, you should define protocol variants. Certain protocols can exhibit different forms or variations within a standard; these are known as Variants. For example, different standards developed for the same protocol (e.g., various Frame Relay standards or different UMTS releases). In order to correctly generate and interpret the frames of such a protocol, the particular variant must also be defined for the analyzer. The Protocol Variants pane in the Configuration tab of the various applications can be used to select an appropriate variant for a given protocol.
Selecting the Starting Protocol
After defining the Starting Protocol, the decode then branches off to various encapsultated protocols.
Below is a list of available Starting Protocols and those situations when they should be used.

Protocol Decoding
Introduction
The following table lists all the protocols available with your Performer in alphabetical order. Each protocol is categorized according to family. To find out more about the specific protocol or the family it belongs to, see www.Protocols.com.
The Decode Stack describes the setting that should be selected in the Starting Protocol field of the Protocol Configuration tab in order to obtain a correct decoding of the protocol. The Comments column contains additional information where necessary, for example special Protocol Variant settings that are required. .
