Test Protocol –! Principle based
–! Includes minimum requirements – free to exceed those but not lower them
–! Can be adapted to different countries/regions, differences in wash habits, wash temperatures, recommended dosages etc
Scope –! Logistics: communication, selection, pick-up, sampling
–! Test execution –! Results: calculation, evaluation, communication
Categories –! HDD, LDD, Laundry Additives
Countries -! Should apply to all A.I.S.E. member countries
Benefits
-! More realistic and more reliable comparison of product qualities for consumers
-! Improvement in test quality
-! Common approach

MODIFIED STAIN SET
© 2013 Dr. Tom Hilgers, www.testmaterials.com - Testmaterials & Concepts wfk
• Every test design and evaluation includes ,weighing factors‘ for stain types.
• If the evaluation does not use explicit weighing factors, these factors are determined by the number of stains per group.
Conclusion
© 2013 Dr. Tom Hilgers, www.testmaterials.com - Testmaterials & Concepts wfk
• A.I.S.E. test results could be more relevant if the dominating impact of the detergents‘ bleach activity would be reduced by
‣ introduction of stain groups into the evaluation, and/or
‣ revision of the stain set.

Examples of General Performance Tests
© 2013 Dr. Tom Hilgers, www.testmaterials.com - Testmaterials & Concepts wfk
The test protocols lay out requirements for testing and evaluation of several aspects of laudry detergent performance
• Stain/Soil removal
• Color Maintenance
• Dye Transfer
© 2013 Dr. Tom Hilgers, www.testmaterials.com - Testmaterials & Concepts wfk
Some parameters that may vary
• Lab test vs. wash/wear (StiWa vs. others)
• Cycle / Temperature (30°C / 40°C)
• Water Hardness (varies)
• Load Size (3 to 3,5 kg)
• Composition (mainly CO)
• Ballast Soil
• Stain Set and Evaluation
© 2013 Dr. Tom Hilgers, www.testmaterials.com - Testmaterials & Concepts wfk
• We tested 8 HD market detergents4 DE, 2 FR, 2 US
• 3 powders, 5 liquids
‣ Wash temp. 40°C
‣ Load 3,5 kg
‣ Hardness 2,5 mmol/l

• Ballast soil is necessary to avoid misleading results e.g. due to unrealistic foam levels
• Ballast soil SBL2004 increases differentiation(giving a more realistic estimate of real performance)

Normalization, evaluation per stain group and weighted scoring using GPS Tools:
© 2013 Dr. Tom Hilgers, www.testmaterials.com - Testmaterials & Concepts wfk
• Stain selection IS (of course) important
• Stain selection as in or similar to A.I.S.E. appear to be widely used, leading to comparable results of different tests in Europe (and USA?)
• Balanced contribution of stain (response) groups allows realistic and therefore relevant overall scoring (still too much impact of bleach in A.I.S.E. and others)
Conclusion
