Performance:

In most of indie band music video, instrumental

performance could be seen, such as the Killers

‘Runaways’ and Muse ‘New Born’. In these video,

musical instrument such as bass and drums could be

seen when band members playing it. Instrument is a

convention of indie rock music video. We know it is a

challenge for us that we have no band performance in

the video, instead we have dance performance with

no instrument. We did not use the instrumental

performance by the limitation of our group that we

have any friends who has a band. And also we think

the combination of dance performance and solo

performance can represent the song better, that

audience can more focus on the song itself.

As Sven Carlsson’s theory, our music video is a

performances clip with the combination of song and

dance performances. In our music video, Bronte’s

dancing sequence is the climax of the song, her

performance shown her true feelings by her strong

body language these sequence represent the theme of

the story and the lyrics. Her dance style is the

combination of modern and ballet dance. This has

been seen before, for example in Florence’s music

video ‘Spectrum’, dancers’ dance style are also the

combinations of modern and ballet, ballet’s elegant

well represents the lyrics ‘We were cold and we were

clear’, when the song reach the climax, dance style

change into modern dance to represent lyrics.

For the song performance, solo performance is used

in our music video; Bronte is doing the song

performance by herself. This is very different to the

other indie rock music video by comparison between

for example The Killer’s music video. We chose this

performance because of the theme of the song; we

think it may be the best way to represent this song, to

describe the meaning of the lyrics. We used a

convention for the other genre pops, solo

performance usually can be seen in this genre. Such as

in Rihanna’s ‘Diamonds’ music video, she is solo

performance in the music video to represent her song

by her strong performance which showed the

audience her mind.
