Taking guests from ship to shore on an eight-foot RIB used to be the norm in the good old yachting days; a grey rubber duck suspended aft, dropped via a series of pulleys and blocks seemed so simple and technically unchallenging when anchored off Cap D’Antibes in a 30-metre motoryacht, which was large back in the mid ’80s. Some 30 years later things have changed and the world of guest transportation has stepped up a gear: no one expects to get their feet wet, their hair displaced or their face sprayed, and the thought of making more than one journey to transfer all of the guests is now unthinkable.

To buy tenders, floating limos, toys and other ‘aquatainment’ gadgets has become a serious business, with hundreds of manufacturers and several hundred models available to choose from. The buying process is very much down to preference, recommendation, or what fits the space on board, but perhaps the market relies too much on what they’ve got used to and not enough exploration or investigation is carried out to make sure the guests and the crew have the best gear for the task in hand.

This second edition of the tenders and toys guide, both online and in print, is designed to showcase a good cross -section of what is on the market, with more models to be added to the online portfolio over the year, as new models are launched. To make the buying process more fun and interactive, 2015 will also see the arrival of our new Tenders & Toys Experience, a two-day event that will allow a few hundred owners, captains, first officers and designers the rare chance to test drive and play with as many tenders as they want to, in order to put the products through their paces.

Yes, there are plenty of tenders available to inspect at the variety of yacht shows, but having conducted some research, the idea of 40 or more tenders and toys being available for live testing in the right environment as part of the buying process has been well received. This, combined with some social interaction and a few design and technical workshops, delivering manufacturers direct feedback and product development input, is a concept that we feel confident will aid the buying process of the right tender or toy that is fit for purpose and delivers a great guest experience.

With over two billion euros forecast to be spent over the next three years on tenders and toys, this is a serious market that we feel warrants a comprehensive buying tool, an online trading platform and a dedicated testing experience. Over the next 12 months our tenders and toys testing and buying platform will develop into a valuable portfolio for the market.

It should also deliver a lot of fun and a better experience for guests and crew in the future.
