MUSIC AND THE MOONA NOTE FROM BRUCE ADOLPHE

There are a lots of things out there beyond the atmosphere of our planet: our sun, other planets, asteroids, meteorites, stars, and even other galaxies. But when it comes to inspiring music and poetry, the celestial body that wins the award (if there were such an award) is the moon.

The 19th century Scottish author Robert Louis Stevenson wrote a poem about the moon that includes these wonderful lines:

The squalling cat and the squeaking mouse,The howling dog by the door of the house,The bat that lies in bed at noon,All love to be out by the light of the moon.

Ah, yes the light of the moon! So many poets use moonlight for inspiration. Here are some delightful lines from Edward Lear’s The Owl and the Pussycat:

They dined on mince, and slices of quince,Which they ate with a runcible spoon; And hand in hand, on the edge of the sand,They danced by the light of the moon, the moon, the moon,They danced by the light of the moon.

Poets love moonlight and so do composers. Music alone can’t communicate moonlight exactly but it can make you feel the way moonlight makes you feel: mysterious, luminous, eerie, and still.

The poet Ludwig Rellstab wrote that the first movement of a particular piano sonata by Beethoven had the feeling of moonlight shining on Lake Lucerne (in Switzerland). And people agreed with Rellstab and so Moonlight Sonata has stuck as the nickname for the piece ever since. But what did Beethoven call the piece? He called it Sonata No. 14 in C-sharp minor Quasi una fantasia Op. 27, No. 2.  You can see that Moonlight Sonata is a catchier title!

Quasi una fantasia is Italian for “Like a fantasy,” which was simply a way of telling people that the first movement is not in a “sonata form” but rather freer and more improvisatory.

Today’s concert features moon-inspired music by Beethoven, Schumann, Debussy, Schoenberg, and George Crumb…and just possibly a new tune by Inspector Pulse! Remember moon rhymes with tune…

BRUCE ADOLPHE  When he was a child Bruce Adolphe watched both Victor Borge and Leonard Bernstein on television, and after seeing them, he began “playing piano” on the breakfast table and cracking jokes with a Danish accent. Having no choice, his parents bought him a toy piano, at which Bruce pretended to be Schroeder of the Peanuts cartoons. Soon after the toy piano was pecked apart by the family parakeet, Bruce’s parents purchased a real piano and a larger bird. By age ten, Bruce was

composing music, and no one has been able to stop him since. As a “tween,” Bruce studied piano, clarinet, guitar, bass, and—as a teen—the bassoon. All this time, he wrote music and improvised accompaniments to everything that happened around him, as if life were a movie in need of a score. His favorite summers were spent at the Kinhaven Music School and he loved his Saturdays at The Juilliard School’s Pre-College Division. Today, Bruce spends his time composing chamber music, playing the piano, and performing in concerts for people like you. He lives right around the corner on the Upper West Side with his wife, pianist Marija, his daughter Katja, and his opera-and-jazz-singing parrot PollyRhythm, the same bird he has had since he was ten years old.  Bruce performs weekly on public radio's Performance Today, playing his Piano Puzzlers (familiar tunes in the styles of the great masters) and you can catch that show on WQXR or on iTunes, or as a podcast from American Public Media. Many great musicians have performed Bruce's music, including Yo-Yo Ma, Itzhak Perlman, the Brentano Quartet, and over 60 symphony orchestras around the world, and of course lots of amazing players right here at the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, where Bruce has been making music since 1992. If you want to check out Bruce's CDs and educational pieces for all ages, please visit the website of The Learning Maestros. You might enjoy his book The Mind’s Ear: Exercises for Improving the Musical Imagination, published by Oxford University Press. Recent recordings of Bruce’s music include Chopin Dreams performed by the Italian pianist Carlo Grante on Naxos American Classics label; and Einstein's Light performed by violinist Joshua Bell and pianist Marija Stroke on Sony Classical; and The End of Tonight (three mezzo-sopranos, three cellos, and piano) a digital release on the St. Urban label. He is currently composing works commissioned by: the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center for the 50th anniversary season; the Brentano String Quartet Beethoven year project; the River Oaks Chamber Orchestra in connection with the opening of the newly renovated Holocaust Museum of Houston; the Da Capo Chamber Players for their 50th anniversary; and the Dorian Wind Quintet.

WILLIAM ANDERSON  William Anderson started playing guitar for hours and hours every day in seventh grade. His Aunt Jan taught him some of his first classical guitar pieces. In high school he practiced four hours a day, from eight to midnight. No one complained about the noise. After studying classical guitar in college, he branched out, learning banjo, mandolin, theorbo, tiple, and other plucked strings. He has performed with many ensembles such as the New York Philharmonic, the Chamber

Music Society of Lincoln Center, the Metropolitan Opera Chamber Players, Sequitur, the Group for Contemporary Music, and the Da Capo Chamber Players. He is now mostly busy as a composer and also enjoys teaching guitar at Sarah Lawrence College and Queens College.

TONY ARNOLD  When she was a kid, Tony Arnold learned to play piano by ear, composed, sang, and played every instrument she could persuade her parents to let her bring home—flute, oboe, bassoon, and French horn (but they drew the line at tuba). She never intended to become a professional vocalist at all. In fact, she thought she might like to be an orchestral conductor, which she did for ten years as a young adult. When she was 15 years old, her composition teacher at a

summer camp played a recording of a piece by George Crumb, which had all kinds of strange, forest-like sounds in it. Tony was surprised when she found out that many of those noises were made by a human voice, and not by animals, or even musical instruments. These sounds remained so inspiring to her that later in life, when she was 30 years old, Tony stopped conducting and instead began learning to make those funny noises with her voice. Once she had a lexicon of vocal tricks under her belt, she started asking her composer friends to write music for the cool sounds she could make. She likes to blend her unique vocal palette with different styles of singing, some more like opera, some more like folk music, to make something completely new and hopefully inspiring to her listeners and collaborators. She still conducts from time to time, but only for people she really loves, like her students.

CATHERINE GREGORY  Catherine Gregory grew up in the beautiful and distant land of Australia. Her first instrument was the piano, but when she heard the flute, she was so enchanted by its sound that she decided to switch. She loves its versatility, and how it allows her to play in many different combinations of people, all over the world. Catherine first came to the United States on a Fulbright Scholarship, and eventually found her way to New York City for a fellowship as part of Ensemble Connect

(a program of Carnegie Hall and The Juilliard School). Catherine enjoys playing for different audiences—young and old, big and small, upside down and right-side up. Catherine is the 2018 Pro Musicis International Award Winner, and makes her recital debut in Weill Hall this coming Fall, as well as releasing her first solo recording. Catherine has a killer serve in tennis, and loves bushwalking (Aussie for hiking!) and reading.

MIHAI MARICA Mihai Marica started playing the cello at age seven, moments after receiving a quarter-sized cello as his birthday present. He had asked for it three years earlier according to his father, also a cellist and the inspiration behind Mihai’s desire to become a cellist, but was told that he should “play outside with the other children while he still had the chance.” This turned out to be good advice, as he had to practice intensely even during his first year of study in order to

perform a concerto in front of the orchestra where his father plays. Appearing on the stage of Alice Tully Hall as a member of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center’s Bowers Program would have been beyond Mihai’s wildest dreams at age 16, when with quite a bit of luck he met Prof. Aldo Parisot, who helped him move to the United States and become a student at the Yale School of Music. In his spare time Mihai enjoys reading and watching movies.

IAN DAVID ROSENBAUM  Ian David Rosenbaum enjoys playing percussion instruments—from well-known things like vibraphones to ordinary objects like pieces of wood. He loves performing music composed by his friends such as Andy Akiho and John Luther Adams, and working with composers to create new pieces of music. In 2012 he was selected to join the Chamber Music Society’s Bowers Program as only the second percussionist in the program’s history! He has appeared at

the Bay Chamber, Bridgehampton, Chamber Music Northwest, Music@Menlo, Norfolk, and Yellow Barn festivals, and is a member of Sandbox Percussion. In 2017 he released his first solo album, Memory Palace, on VIA Records. He has also recorded for the Bridge, Innova, Naxos, and Starkland labels and is on the faculty of the Dwight School in Manhattan. He performs on Pearl/Adams instruments, Remo drumheads, and with Vic Firth mallets. When not playing percussion, Ian enjoys spending time with his wife and Henri, the greatest cat in the world.

SHAI WOSNER  Pianist Shai Wosner felt really curious to check out a huge piece of furniture that proudly occupied a corner of the living room in his family’s home in Israel, around the time he was five years old. The piano soon became his favorite toy, and after a while he was enjoying picking out tunes from the radio and trying to match chords to them. The farthest thing from his mind was learning how to read music. “I don’t want to take lessons and learn how to read music!” he told his parents. “I just want

to keep playing songs!” (Actually, it was mainly one, very cheesy song he was really crazy about). “Well, his parents said, if you learn how to read music maybe you’ll be able to play more songs!”—he decided to give it a try. He indeed got to play more songs, more interesting songs. Sonatas too! He started to play some of those pieces in front of other people, even in other countries, until he came to New York to study with Emanuel Ax at Juilliard. Today he divides his time between playing the piano and playing with his kids who are six and 11.

This season is supported by public funds from the National Endowment for the Arts; the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, in partnership with the City Council; and the New York State Council on

the Arts, with the support of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo and the New York State Legislature.

From the Chamber Music Society's first season in 1969–70, support for this special institution has come from those who share a love of chamber music and a vision for the Society's future.

While celebrating our 49th Anniversary Season this year we pay tribute to the distinguished artists who have graced our stages in thousands of performances. Some of you were here in our beloved Alice Tully Hall when the Chamber Music Society's first notes were played. Many more of you are loyal subscribers and donors who, like our very first audience, are deeply passionate about this intimate art form and are dedicated to our continued success.

Those first steps 49 years ago were bold and ambitious. Please join your fellow chamber music enthusiasts in supporting CMS by calling the Membership Office at (212) 875-5782, or by donating online at www.ChamberMusicSociety.org/support. Thank you for helping us to continue to pursue our important mission, and for enabling the Chamber Music Society to continue to present the finest performances that this art form has to offer.

The Chamber Music Society gratefully recognizes those individuals, foundations, and corporations whose estate gifts and exceptional support of the Endowment Fund ensure a firm financial base for the Chamber Music Society's continued artistic excellence. For information about gifts to the Endowment Fund, please contact Executive Director Suzanne Davidson at (212) 875-5779.
