Dear Parents and Caregivers, Last Friday, the Year 4 students organised a very successful Bake Sale. The Bake Sale’s goal
was to raise money for the Sydney Children’s Hospital, and in the end a grand total of
$1182.15 was raised! The event was organised in very quick time with four students, Mia Johnson, Tessa Marks, Bailey Mitchell and Paloma Nicholas, consulting their peers and making a list of the goods that each child would be donating. The girls were then supported by the Year 6 Charity Portfolio who helped with the setting up and sales. The under-croft was flooded with students (and teachers) the moment the lids were removed. The Year 4 girls wish to thank everyone who assisted with and who supported the Bake Sale. They send a huge thank you to the Year 4 parents who baked the delicious treats and to the Year 6 students who helped on the day. I was also grateful to receive their thanks but it is I who applaud them for all their initiative and hard work on behalf of others. Sunday’s 2018 Kindergarten Orientation Day was a tremendous success, with a large contingent of children and parents arriving on campus to be guided through the exciting prospects which await them next year. My thanks to all who contributed to the day – their efforts did much to present the school in the best possible light and I know that the new cohort of students and their parents left here eager to return in 2018. Likewise, all reports about the Year 7 Orientation Day and Year 7 2018 Parent Evening were very positive, with the current Year 6s and their parents excitedly learning more about the new phase of their academic journey. Dr Arne Rubinstein’s talk on Thursday to parents of Year 5 and 6 students provided much food for thought. It was a privilege to have Dr Rubinstein at our school and I know that parents who attended would have gained new insights from what was discussed on the evening.

At assembly last week, we were treated to a display by our primary drummers from this year's
Percussion Competition. We were joined by our adjudicator Andrew Dickeson, who teaches
at the Conservatorium and UNSW, while still maintaining a performing career as one of
Sydney's best jazz drummers. Andrew was blown away with the talent and the whole
creative atmosphere of the event. He thought that our students were extremely lucky to be
able to perform with a live band and he would like to return to give a master class in the near
future. We appreciated all of his input and thank him for his enthusiastic support of music at
Reddam.
Tuesday night's Reddam Idol Competition was
sensational. Twenty seven of our finest vocal
artists lined-up to entertain and enthral the
enthusiastic audience. Ranging in age from
10 to 14 years old it was hard to believe that
these were school children. Their maturity and
stage presence was astonishing. With judging
tight, the audience’s vote was the critical one
which was used to decide the winner. In the
end, Kate Aruman was voted Idol 2017 for her
stunning performance of Fallen by Alicia Keys.
Congratulations to all those who took part
and to the many others who auditioned. It
truly was a spectacular insight into the talent
which we have in the school.

The Music Department’s final concert for the year was held on Wednesday. Students from
Kindergarten through to Year 8 performed solos across voice, piano, strings and wind. There
were thirty five performances in all, which is indicative of the incredible job which the Music
Department has done to inspire the students throughout the year. All of these performances
demonstrated the musical strength that permeates the school, and all the students who
performed were a credit to their teachers. Congratulations to all.
Max Styles, in Year 6, continues to impress in his performances. Last weekend, he competed
with the Brent Street Dance School at the Ooh La La Dance Challenge. They came first in both
Contemporary and Musical Theatre, where they performed "The Rhythm of Life", with Max taking
on the lead singing role. Then they came second in Tap, Jazz and Hip Hop. We congratulate
Max for these excellent achievements. It is always a pleasure it is to see our students pursuing
their passions and achieving accolades along the way.
The Year 1s have an excursion to look forward to next week, as they will visit the Sydney
Children’s Hospital on Tuesday. This trip promises to be an eye-opener for our students, as they
are exposed to the complexities of running this renowned hospital.
Our Mufti Day on Thursday has an animal focus, with all proceeds going towards the ‘Save the
Orangutans’ fund. We thank our families for their support and trust that the students will
remember the reason behind their being allowed to wear mufti on the day.
That evening, the Jewish Studies students will present the efforts of their hard work at the Project
Heritage presentation evening. I know that many hours have been expended on their research
and am sure that all attending will be impressed with their insight and thorough presentations.
Finally, students have the Year 3-6 Battle of the Bands to anticipate, which takes place on
Friday. Once again, excitement has been building for this event and it will no doubt be exactly
what the name suggests – a battle between several top bands, all vying for the support of the
audience. Best wishes to all those taking part. It promises to be a memorable event.
Enjoy the weekend!

who celebrated their special day this week and over the weekend We hope you had a fabulous day!
KINDERGARTEN
This week the Kindergarten students filled the classrooms with song and dance. Between Jungle
Book practices and rehearsals for our assembly dance it is surprising that the students managed
to find time to do any work. Yet, when they weren’t singing and dancing up a storm the
students learnt about sharing and patterns, they wrote recounts, were introduced to the ‘wh’
sound and researched some sea creatures.
It has been a delight to watch the students learn the choreography for the dance. Many
students began by tentatively following along but by Thursday afternoon every child was
rocking their best moves on the stage. We certainly have some confident performers in the
Kindergarten cohort this year!

YEAR 1
This week was another busy week for Year One. In History and Geography the children were
immersed in their learning about the topic “Food”. The students used the healthy food pyramid
to understand the food groups and understand how the food can provide for the body. Also a
big thank you to Nutritionist, Ms Mandy Sacher, who visited the children on Tuesday morning
and who provided us with lots of useful information about eating a balanced diet and how it
can still be very tasty!
In Mathematics this week students consolidated their learning of Time. They made their very
own watches and even enjoyed the challenge of telling the quarter times!
Our text type of Poetry so far this term has displayed an array of talent from the children.
Poems have included: alliteration, imagery, rhyming and similes! We hope that you enjoy our
colour poems.

YEAR 2
In Science this week, Year 2 were kept busy learning about six animal groups: mammals, birds,
insects, fish, amphibians and reptiles. We learnt about the features of each group and sorted
animals into the correct group. Over the next few weeks, we will be looking more closely at an
animal belonging to the amphibian group, namely the frog.
The Year 2 mathematicians learned about money this week. We worked out which coins we
need to use to pay for certain items and calculated how much change we receive when
paying with different coins.
Continuing with our theme of money, we had some very interesting news presentations about
the animals and famous people featured on Australian coins and notes. The children also
thought about which important Australian they would put on a coin or note and why.
Well done Year 2 on another productive week!

YEAR 3
In PDH lessons this term the Year 3s have
been investigating how to live healthy lives.
This week the students explored how to be
healthy physically, emotionally and socially.
We discussed the steps that we can take to
ensure that all areas of our health are
maintained. This includes eating a balanced
diet, being active and socialising with family
and friends every day.
The students filled in a diary to make
themselves aware of their choices and
reflected as to whether there was a balance
in their day-to-day lives. They identified areas
in which they could improve their overall
health and are excited to implement new
strategies into their daily routines. We look
forward to seeing how these choices
improve their overall health and lifestyle.

YEAR 4
In Year 4 this week, the students were eager to receive their revision booklets – this shows
what diligent and conscientious students we have. Keep working hard!
In English, the students thoroughly enjoyed writing and reciting poetry. They have used their
knowledge of figurative language and written poems to create imagery. All three teachers
were utterly impressed with their enthusiasm and quality of their work.
Here is an example of a Year 4 poem by: Amelia Ross & Thea Debellis
Winter
Snow shoots down like bullets
through the dark night sky.
Splatting on the icy, cold floor,
with a bang, bam, BOOM!
My wind wraps around
people’s warm woollen coats.
The sun is not here to play,
The freezing cold ice is still not melting away
I help to build snowmen
for all who dare to play.
I hope I am no trouble,
as I can make people go away.
Flaking around my surroundings,
isolating plants with fear,
yet,
winter still comes every year.

YEAR 5 EXTENSION ENGLISH
This week, the Year 5 Extension class practised skills in preparation for writing an essay on the
class text, ‘Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes”. The main body paragraphs use a PEEL
structure which stands for ‘point, evidence, explain and link’. This acronym is used to help
students structure their paragraph in a logical way. As part of the extension skills set for the
class, students also demonstrated the ability to pick out key words from the evidence and
analyse the language used. Rocco Buck demonstrates this in the following paragraph which
answers a question about the morals that Sadako teaches readers:
The first important lesson the reader learns
from the book is about hope. In the novel
it says, “The golden crane helped. It re-
minded Sadako that there was always
hope.” The verb ‘helped’ suggests that
the crane eased the pain for Sadako and
gave her hope to survive. The adverb
‘always’ means there was constantly
hope even in the darkest times.
Therefore, Sadako teaches us about the
importance of having hope.
YEAR 5 & 6 MATHEMATICS
Year 5 and 6 Mathematics students revisited decimals place value. We compared,
converted, ordered and expanded decimals. Concrete apparatus and a huge decimal
place value table was used to explain the concepts and promote a deeper understanding. It
was wonderful to see students forming the link between common fractions and decimal
fractions and converting between the two.
This week, Year 5 and 6 students worked hard to complete investigations and make sense of
our results. In Year 6, conductors and insulators were a focus, as well as a few “tricky” items
that were tested in our circuits (“Why doesn’t a row of staples conduct electricity?”). We also
discussed electrical safety, clarified our interpretation of symbols and signage used to indi-
cate safety to the public and around our homes, and designed our own safety posters.
In Year 5, we wrapped up our investigation by graphing our results, which was a challenge
for some, but I’m proud to say we stuck with it and saw it through to the end! We took a look
at and labelled what we now know is happening with our fennec foxes and their over-sized
ears, and began learning about the adaptations of nocturnal animals: bats and owls.
YEAR 5 & 6 SCIENCE
The Reddam House Primary School Newsletter Volume 17 Issue 32 Friday 27 October 2017 Page 12
Year 6 English have been working on essay writing skills. In preparation for Year 7, students
have been writing PETAL paragraphs which stands for ‘point, evidence, technique, analyse
and link’. In order to get a higher grade, students will aim to analyse 3 or 4 techniques in their
paragraph by repeating the technique and analysing the steps. The students analysed the
cinematic techniques used in the film ‘Red Dog’. Here, Gigi Obiri-Asare demonstrates a
PETAL paragraph, analysing the theme of belonging in the film:
The director uses a variety of cinematic techniques to portray the
importance of belonging. In this scene, John and Red Dog are
sitting in a bus together and John is leaning over the seat in a
relaxed manner. The setting of this scene has been manipulated to
create a sense of belonging: Red is sitting on the seat of a bus which
is meant for a human. This suggests to the viewer that Red is
considered an equal and one of the community of Dampier. Their
gaze also demonstrates belonging: John and Red are looking at
each other suggesting they are care for each other and give each
other mutual respect. In addition, John’s costume also plays an im-
portant part in creating a sense of belonging. His dull, green col-
oured shirt symbolises the simple life they are living in which to-
getherness is important and all you need to have is a companion.
Therefore, it is now clear as to how the director has utilised cinematic
techniques to demonstrate the significance of belonging.
