DefinitionOveractive bladder (OAB)

is a urological condition definedby a set of symptoms: "ur-gency, with or without urge in-continence, usually with fre-quency and nocturia." CausesIt is often associated with

detrusor overactivity, a patternof bladder muscle contractionobserved during urodynamics,and treatments for OAB, areusually synonymous withtreatments for detrusoroveractivity. OAB is distinctfrom stress urinary inconti-nence, but when they occurtogether is usually known asmixed incontinence.

It is expected that OABwill become more common inthe future as the prevalenceof OAB increases with age.

A surgical interven-tion involves the enlargementof the bladder using bowel tis-sues, although generally usedas a last resort. This procedurecan greatly enlarge urine vol-ume in the bladder.

launched Sri Sathya Sai VidyaVahini programme of theSathya Sai Baba Central Trustat Puttaparthi in AndhraPradesh.

He participated in thelaunch programme held atPrashanti Nilayam, the head-quarters of Sathya Sai Baba'sempire, in Anantapur district.He also prayed at the samadhiof the spiritual guru, who diedtwo months ago.

The Tata Group is provid-ing funds for Vidya Vahini,which is aimed at impartingquality education with the helpof computers and advancedteaching equipment.

The programme is beingimplemented in 99 schools inIndia and one school each in33 countries.

All the institutes are runby the Sathya Sai Baba Trust.

Tata Consultancy Services(TCS) has developed the soft-ware for Vidya Vahini, a petproject of the late guru.

Ratan Tata visitedPuttaparthi in November lastyear to personally hand overthe software to Sathya SaiBaba on the occasion of his85th birthday.

The Baba's personalcaregiver Satyajit briefedRatan Tata of the activities ofvarious educational institu-tions run by the trust.

The industrialist also heldtalks with members of thetrust, who briefed him aboutthe plans to carry on the ser-vice and charity workslaunched by Sathya sai Baba.

Snoring is No Laughing Matter

Symptoms of SleepApnea:

Those who have OSA areoften unaware of their condi-tion and think they sleep well.The symptoms that usuallycause these individuals to seekhelp are daytime drowsinessor complaints of snoring andbreathing cessations observedby a bed partner.

Other symptoms mayinclude:

Diagnosing Sleep Dis-orders

If you exhibit several OSAsymptoms, it's important youvisit your ENT Surgeon for acomplete examination and anaccurate diagnosis.

At your first visit, yourdoctor will take a medical his-tory and perform a head andneck examination looking forproblems that might contrib-ute to sleep-related breathingproblems. If the doctor sus-pects a sleep disorder, you willbe referred for a sleep study,which will monitor your night-time sleep patterns through aspecial test calledpolysomnography.

Polysomnography will re-quire you to sleep at the clinicovernight while a computermonitors your sleep patternand gathers data about thenumber and length of each

breathing cessation or otherproblems that disturb yoursleep. Often a "split night"study is done during which aC-PAP (continuous positiveairway pressure) device isused. During polysomnography, every effort is madeto limit disturbances to yoursleep.

Treating Sleep ApneaObstructive sleep apnea

can be effectively treated. De-pending on whether your OSAis mild, moderate or severe,your doctor will select thetreatment that is best for you.

Behaviour Modification -If you are diagnosed with mildsleep apnea, your doctor maysuggest you employ the non-medical treatments recom-mended to reduce snoring:weight loss; avoiding

alcohol, caffeine and heavymeals within two hours ofbedtime; no sedatives; and achange of sleeping positions.In mild cases, these practicalinterventions may improve oreven cure snoring and sleepapnea.
