Certification. Both Dr. McGuire and Dr. Scheyer areDiplomates of the American Board ofPeriodontology, an honor that only one-third ofthe periodontists in the United States earn.

Dr. McGuire and Dr. Scheyer are also certified by the Texas State Board of Dental Examiners toadminister conscious sedation and are certified bythe American Heart Association in life support.They provide excellent pain and anxiety control along with conscious sedation to make your dental experience more relaxing and comfortable.

Teaching. Dr. McGuire and Dr. Scheyer are regularly asked by their peers to lecture onesthetics, regenerative procedures, dental implants,tissue engineering and the link between peri-odontal disease and systemic health. Both doctorshold teaching positions at the graduate and post-graduate level, have published in peer-reviewedjournals and textbooks and often conduct teach-ing sessions for colleagues at their office.

Periodontal Disease Treatment. Periodontaldiseases are bacterial infections that destroy theattachment fibers and supporting bone that holdyour teeth in place. Initially, the gums separatefrom the teeth and allow for more bacteria to setup a home in a periodontal pocket.

As the disease progresses, these pockets deepen,more gum tissue and bone are destroyed, and theteeth eventually become loose. If periodontaldisease is not treated, the teeth may need to beremoved.There are many treatment options toresolve this destructive disease.

SERVICES

Smile Recontouring. As an adjunct to veneersor crowns, we can recontour the bone and gumsthat surround your teeth to create proper toothlengths and gum contours to give you the mostpleasing smile.This can sometimes be done withno incisions with the use of a laser.

Soft Tissue Grafting. If you were born with aninadequate amount of gum tissue, or you havelost soft tissue and underlying bone, our team canperform procedures to re-create these lost tissuesand sometimes conceal the root surfaces that havebeen exposed.

Whether your goal is to cover the roots whererecession has occurred or just prevent furtherrecession, we can transplant gum tissue and usethe latest alternatives to your own tissue.

Dental Implants. Dental implants, one of thegreatest advances in dentistry, can be successfullyused to replace teeth lost to periodontal diseaseand trauma. Implants are placed into your mouthand allowed to heal.They can then be used, likethe roots of your teeth, to support a crown,bridge or dentures. Dental implants are a commonand fitting treatment option for many.

With today’s computer-guided technology, we can accurately pre-plan yourreconstruction, allowing us, in certain situations,to provide temporary teeth in one day.This tech-nology also minimizes surgical trauma and allowsfor rapid healing.

Bone Regeneration. When teeth and bone arelost due to oral disease or trauma, your smile canbe restored to the highest esthetic standards onlyby bone regeneration.Advances in science andtechnology now allow us to re-grow missingbone along with periodontal structures thatattach teeth to the bone.

Dr. E.Todd Scheyer

Dr. Scheyer’s practice focuses onperiodontics and dental implantswith special interest in periodontalregeneration and complex periodon-tal prosthodontic implant recon-struction. He is a world leader oncomputer-guided implantology thatcan allow for immediate and early

loading of dental implants.

He currently serves as a faculty member at the University ofTexas Dental Branch at Houston. He serves as a guest lecturerat the University of Texas Health Science Center at SanAntonio in the Department of Periodontics. He was a teach-ing assistant at the Medical College of Virginia in theDepartment of Fixed Prosthodontics.

Dr. Scheyer is a Diplomate of The American Board ofPeriodontology. He is a member and leader of numerous den-tal and periodontal societies, including The American DentalAssociation, Greater Houston Dental Society,Texas Society ofPeriodontists, the American Academy of Osseointegration, theInternational Congress of Oral Implantologists, the AmericanAcademy of Periodontology, the Southwest Society ofPeriodontists, and the Houston Society of Periodontists. Hecurrently serves on the Board of Trustees for The AmericanAcademy of Periodontology.

Dr. Scheyer publishes frequently in scientific journals and isconstantly involved with clinical research with a special interest in tissue engineering/regeneration and estheticimplant tooth replacement. Dr. Scheyer has published chaptersin implant and periodontal related textbooks. Dr. Scheyer frequently shares his experience and knowledge throughnational and international lecturing.

Dr. Scheyer received his bachelor’s degree in biology withhonors from Arizona State University. He attended dentalschool at the Medical College of Virginia and received hiscertificate and a master’s in periodontics from the Universityof Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.Throughouthis dental and periodontal training, he has received numerousawards for his leadership, academic achievement and research.

LEADERSHIP AND EXPERIENCE

Dr. Michael K. McGuire

Dr. McGuire’s practice focuses onperiodontics and implants, with a spe-cial interest in periodontal plastic sur-gery and regeneration. He has beenresponsible for the introduction andadvancement of soft tissue engineer-ing in periodontics.

Dr. McGuire is the author of over fifty scientific articles andtextbook chapters on periodontology. He serves on the editori-al board of multiple publications, including the Journal ofPeriodontology, the International Journal of Periodontics andRestorative Dentistry, and the International Journal of Oral andMaxillofacial Implants.

An eminent speaker, having given over 200 programs, Dr.McGuire has lectured for both national and international audi-ences in continuing education programs. He is currently a fac-ulty member at both the University of Texas Health Sciencecenter/San Antonio and Houston.

Dr. McGuire’s research has received the American Academy ofPeriodontology’s highest recognition for excellence, receivingboth the Robinson Regeneration Award and the ClinicalResearch Award. He is also the recipient of the Academy’s pres-tigious Master Clinician Award.

Dr. McGuire is a Diplomate of the American Board ofPeriodontology. He has served as president of numerous dentalorganizations, including the American Academy ofPeriodontology, the American Academy of PeriodontologyFoundation, the Southwest Society of Periodontists, the TexasSociety of Periodontists, and Greater Houston Dental Society.

Dr. McGuire received a bachelor’s degree in psychology fromBaylor University. He received both his D.D.S. and Certificateof Periodontics from the Emory University School ofDentistry.

While the accomplishments above may rival or eclipse manyacademicians, perhaps Dr. McGuire’s most outstanding achieve-ment is that he accomplished all of this not in the ivory towerof academics but in full time private practice.
