Pepin County has a very rich past filled with historical people, places, and events. Pepin County was originally occupied by Native Americans that are categorized within the Woodlands Cultural Group, including the Oneota, Dakota, and Ojibwa. These individuals left behind village ruins and effigy mounds with broken pottery, arrowheads, animal bones, beads, and seeds which provide us with clues to their lifestyle. The Native Americans also passed down an oral history, which includes the “Legend of the Maiden Rock.” Visitors can visit Maiden Rock, now a state wildlife area; the site is said to be the site where an Indian maiden jumped to her death to avoid being married to someone she did not love.

There were many European explorers to the area, most notably Pierre Pepin and Jean Pepin du Cardonnets who explored and traded throughout the area before becoming the namesake to Lake Pepin, a village, and the county. Father Louis Hennepin was captured by a band of the Assati Sioux (Dakota) from Lake Pepin, once released he returned to explore the Chippewa River. Nicholas built a stockade and trading post on the shores of Lake Pepin. French trappers and traders dominated commerce along the Mississippi River for the next 100 years and attracted numerous settlers to the area, especially those interested in logging.

Other notable residents include:• Laura Ingalls Wilder – Born in rural Pepin, Laura is one of the world’s most famous children’s authors. Her

family moved away from the area when she was young, however memories of her childhood are included with “Little House in the Big Woods.”

• Helen Parkhurst - Born in Durand, this woman went on to be a world renown educator. She is famous for the development of the Dalton Plan, this system provides individualized instruction for students and focuses on children learning at their own pace and to budget their learning time.

• Elizabeth Clark Hardy – A famous writer who lived in the Town of Lima and City of Durand. She contributed poetry and prose to many national and state magazines from 1870 until her death. Her most famous poem, “The Unknown Shore” was recited at state funerals for Woodrow Wilson and Warren G. Harding.

The Arts are Alive in Pepin County

History of DurandThe small, friendly, picturesque City of Durand is situated on the banks of the Chippewa River and is the county seat of Pepin County.

Although the area was previously settled by the Babatz household and a few other individuals, Durand was officially founded in 1856 when Miles Durand Prindle traveled up the Chippewa River in a keel boat, claimed land, and established a plat for a village. Durand was formally incorporated into a village by an act of Wisconsin Legislature in 1871 and upgraded to a City in 1887.

Another community, known as Chippewa, was located upstream at the mouth of Bear Creek had been established a few years earlier. However, after a few years the businesses and homes began to be abandoned due to frequent flooding. In 1858, Durand petitioned the government to close the post office in Chippewa; once approval was granted they moved the contents of the Chippewa post office in a wheelbarrow and opened the post office to Durand. This task was instrumental in helping to populate Durand.

The county seat was a topic of controversy for many years, when the county was formed it was designated as the Village of Pepin, in 1861 it was moved to Durand by popular vote. In 1873, they began construction of the courthouse on Washington Square. An election in 1881 relocated the county seat to Arkansaw until 1886 when it was reinstated to the City of Durand. The original courthouse was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1981 as it is the only wooden frame courthouse left in Wisconsin. The building was converted to a historical museum in 1984 which is open to the public by appointment.

Durand was once known as a “hanging town” after Edward Maxwell was lynched by a mob in the courthouse yard on November 19, 1881. Maxwell and his brother were being charged with the shooting deaths of the Pepin County Sheriff and a deputy from Dunn County; although had escaped custody. Edward was captured in Nebraska and returned to Durand for his trial; as he was being transported between the courtroom and the jail a group of men grabbed him, put a noose around his neck, and dragged him to an old oak tree east of the courthouse where he was hanged.

Construction of the Chippewa Valley and Superior Railroad began in 1882. It was bought out by the Chicago-Milwaukee-St. Paul Railroad in the same year. Trains served Durand for nearly a century, as the tracks discontinued service to the area in 1981 as track maintenance costs became an economic burden which created hardships for businesses within the city. The City also built a bridge to enable people to cross the Chippewa River, the first bridge was built in 1884; subsequent bridges were built in 1902, 1941, and 2006.

The Chippewa River remains a focal point of the community, providing numerous recreational activities. Durand is a thriving community with a strong industrial base, excellent schools, and the only hospital in the county. Over the years, despite fires and floods, the downtown district has maintained a number of vibrant businesses and continues to preserve its small town charm. Visitors can find all they need within the City of Durand. Stop in and visit!

History of StockholmIn 1851, Swedish adventurer Erik Petterson climbed the bluff behind Stockholm, saw

Lake Pepin spreading out before him, and declared it the ideal site for a settlement. In the next year he made his first land purchase and two years later, he and his brother Jacob each brought over a party of immigrants. The land along a recess in the shoreline was surveyed, and in 1856 Stockholm was officially born.In short order, the village became a stopover for Scandinavian immigrants to western

Wisconsin as well as a thriving farming center. At its population peak of 280 in 1880, it boasted three general stores, two hardware stores, and two blacksmith shops. In 1886, the railroad connected the village to farms and commercial centers up and down the river. As the rural population began to dwindle after World War I, the village stayed alive with grain warehousing and brokerage,

clamming activity, a commercial fishing operation, ice harvesting for a wide radius of cities, and dealerships in newly mechanized farm machinery. After World War II, the flight to the cities and loss of the

railroad station nearly took Stockholm off the map. But the beauty and tranquility of the land was not lost on a new generation of visitors. Starting in the 1970’s, artists and urban outsiders began to trickle into the village and surrounding countryside, reviving old storefronts and homes and creating a vibrant cultural life. A new breed of entrepreneurs arrived on their heels, each attuned to the possibilities of a unique merchant community, responsive to the melding of Swedish heritage, natural beauty, and the hum of artistic activity.

History of PepinPepin is situated on the shores of Lake Pepin, a lake that is 3 miles wide and 23 miles long. This beautiful lake is a big attraction for

people from all areas. The lake is great for sailing, fishing, canoeing, water skiing, boating and swimming or even a tour boat ride. Also, several times during the summer, the impressive paddle-wheel boats, the Mississippi Queen and her sister ship the Delta Queen, come through Lake Pepin on their trips up and down the Mississippi River. The sight of these beautiful, old boats, is one few people ever forget!

Pierre Pepin and Jean Pepin, two sons of Frank Guillatune dit Tranchemontagne, were early explorers of this region. They came here from ‘Three Rivers, which is on the lower St. Lawrence in Canada, about 1679. The presence of these two men in this area resulted in the name Pepin for the lake, village and county. The Village was platted in 1855, first incorporated in April of 1860, the incorporation abandoned in 1864, and then re-incorporated in 1882 at the request of a group of residents. The Village was laid out at the foot of the lake for which it was named.

Pepin’s current marina, which shelters sail and power boats, is built in the harbor where steamboats once docked. From the harbor, Lake, Main and Prairie Streets climb the hill to Highway 35 and stretch across the sand prairie on which early hopefuls thought a city to rival Milwaukee would one day rise. Luckily, for the surrounding countryside, it did not. Many visitors and some residents chose the area’s rural peacefulness to escape larger cities. Hikers in the Tiffany Wildlife area can wander the logging roads or follow the old wagon roads kept clear by the DNR.

The beloved children’s author, Laura Ingalls Wilder, was born near the Village of Pepin. She spent her early childhood days in the Pepin area, and her first book, “Little House in the Big Woods,” tells of these days. She is honored with a museum located in the Village, which also features antiques and history of the area. A reconstructed cabin at her birthplace is located 7 miles north of Pepin on County CC. A park and picnic area surround the cabin. Since Laura Ingalls Wilder lived here in the 1870’s as described in “Little House in the Big Woods,” Pepin has been rearranged primarily by the introduction of the railroad.

The construction of the railroad along First Street in 1886 caused the relocation of businesses which had been concentrated on the waterfront. In the l960’s, the trains stopped picking up passengers in Pepin and about 20 years later, the depot building was scheduled to be demolished. However, a group of interested citizens preserved the depot and in the mid l980’s moved it to the Laura Ingalls Wilder Park on Hwy 35 in the Village where it now houses a museum devoted to the grand days of river and rails.

Historically, Pepin was primarily a farming community with a large portion of the population being retired. In more recent years, the number of summer/part-time homeowners has increased. There is a strong work force of trained and skilled workers available in the Pepin area and surrounding communities. Pepin’s businesses are now distributed over the blocks between Hwy 35 and the riverfront.

Lower Chippewa River State Natural Area The Lower Chippewa River State Natural Area features the largest concentration (4,000+ acres in Pepin County) of remaining prairies and savannahs in the state. You will find this habitat on floodplain islands in the river channel and upland forests in the surrounding hillsides. Diversity abounds in the Lower Chippewa River Valley with the largest concentration of rare species in the state; 50% of Wisconsin’s plant species; 70% of the state’s fish species; 75% of Wisconsin’s nesting bird species; 25% of all the native prairies remaining in the state. This wildlife area provides habitat for wildlife and provides people with a place to hunt, trap, and fish. Additionally, visitors can partake in traditional outdoor uses of walking, skiing, snow shoeing, nature study, berry picking, bird watching, etc. Camping is allowed on sandbars along the Chippewa River and in the wildlife area by DNR permit.

Maiden Rock Bluff State Natural Area

This site was established as a State Natural Area and opened to the public in 2004. This State Natural Area protects one of the area’s premier limestone cliff faces on a bluff high above the Mississippi River over-looking Lake Pepin. The view of the river valley is said to be the best in the four-state area. The bluff serves as optimal habitat for golden eagles, bald eagles, peregrine falcons, and turkey vultures for years and also features rare plant species. Visitors are welcome to walk along the 1.5-mile trail and see Maiden Rock Bluff ’s unique natural features. For a leisurely stroll, enter via the mowed trail in the prairie portion which will take you directly to the Maiden Rock Bluff. Hiking trails through the wooded

portion are unmarked, so going this route slightly more challenging to get to the bluff, but worth the views. Perfect for a picnic, birdwatching, hiking, and cross country skiing.

Access: Located just a five-minute drive from Stockholm’s intersection of State Highway 35 and County J, drive north on J 0.7 miles. Turn left onto County Road E and drive one mile to Long Lane, then west about 0.7 miles down a gravel road to the parking area.

The Chippewa Valley Motor Car Association leases the old railroad corridor between the City of Durand and Hwy 35. They collaborate with various non-profits to provide motor car train rides into the Tiffany Wildlife Area for birding, nature study, and general enjoyment. These unique rides into the Tiffany Wildlife Area are offered in early May through September. Check their website to schedule a ride or check for updates at www.ellawisc.com.

The Chippewa River State Trail partly follows an abandoned railroad corridor; much of the trail is urban and suburban, with shorter segments passing through Wisconsin’s bucolic farmland. The trail meanders along its namesake Chippewa River through a region that is rich in logging and railroad history.

Sometimes big things come from small places. The Village of Pepin, on the shores of beautiful Lake Pepin, is home to a famous fine dining restaurant, an awardwinning winery, a celebrated author, and one of the "25 coolest film festivals in the world."

Travel along the scenic Wisconsin Great River Road -named the "most beautiful drive in America" by Huffington Post- to reach our quaint harbor village. Enjoy sailing, fishing, and stunning bluff lined shores on the lake, and visit local shops for hand-made crafts, casual lakeside clothing, farm produce, and more. Have a bite to eat at one of Pepin's fine and casual dining options, with indoor and outdoor seating, and lake and garden views.

For those who come for the water, the Village features a public boat landing with a nearby fish cleaning station, a public beach, sailing excursions and a marina with 150 slips and transient docking.

As celebrated children's author Laura Ingalls Wilder's birthplace, Pepin also boasts a historically accurate reconstruction of the "Little House in the Big Woods," a museum and a festival in the author's honor.

Stay the night or the weekend! Choose between unique bed and breakfasts, lovely vacation rentals, modern accommodations, and a full-service campground.

Center

Club 10 has history roots back to 1858 when the land was purchased to build “The Old Log Cabin” nightclub. The tavern was constructed of cedar logs from old horse barns from the area.

In 1947, the tavern was sold to ten investors which represents the name of Club 10. Club 10 was the stop for the Grey Hound bus line and the restaurant was open 24 hours a day for the travelers.

In 1954, Club 10 added a 6-lane bowling center after a change of the original ten investors. Automatic pin-setters were added in 1957 and center updated in 1972. Then banquet room was added in 1979 with the kitchen also remodeled.

In 1997, Club 10 was sold to the Doerr family. The Doerr’s have completely remodeled and modernized the entire facility. Bowling lanes and machines were rebuilt with a new sound and light system along with automated scoring and bowling furniture added. The exterior has been restored to reveal the siding from the original “Old Log Cabin.”

In 2003, an additional five acres of land behind Club 10 was purchased to further promote the expansion of Club 10’s outdoor entertainment complex.

“Kodiak Banquet Room” is perfect for weddings, large gatherings or reunions of 350 people plus overflow. Dance floor, stage and bar area makes this room perfect for any social gathering.

“Richard’s BBQ Smokehouse & Grill” features great food (Steaks, BBQ, Seafood, Fish, Burgers & Pizza) in a cozy cedar log cabin atmosphere with fireplace.

“Rumor Mill Bar” a fun friendly upscale neighborhood tavern that appeals to any or all taste buds.

“Strike Power Lanes” features a state of the art fully automated 6 bowling lanes with bumpers. Kid birthday parties are a hit with the attached arcade area and pizza.

The outdoor entertainment complex features an outdoor bar, patio, fire pit, volley ball court, horseshoes, beanbag toss and disk (Frisbee) golf coming soon. The beautiful backyard is also ideal for an outdoor wedding.
