SEEKING EMTS AND FIRST RESPONDERS IN ELMA / ALTA VISTA AREA

The Elma/Alta Vista area is in need of more first responders and EMTs to serve the area. Depending upon where you live and ambulance availability, the Elma / Alta Vista area is served by the Riceville, New Hampton, or Cresco

ambulance services. Response time can vary and first responders and EMT’s play a critical role in emergencies.

An EMT Certification course is being offered by NICC in Cresco and Calmar beginning January 9th

and there is a possibility that one may be offered in St Ansgar by Riverland College of Austin beginning in January as well. An

Emergency Medical Responder Hybrid Course is being offered in Calmar beginning in February.

Some funds have been raised locally to reimburse people who complete the course and agree to serve the Elma/Alta Vista area. If you wish to donate to this cause, please send donations to BRIDGE, PO Box 15, Elma, Iowa 50628. Please note on your donation that it is for EMT/First Responder Training. If interested in becoming a first

responder or EMT or to get details of the course options, please contact Joe Thraenert at 563-419-6613.

OSAGE MOTEL

& LOUNGE

Feb. 2017

In December of 2016 Ron & Donna Hinderks celebrated 40 years of owning and operating the Osage Motel & Lounge in Osage. They are proud of their longevity and that they are known for offering quiet, friendly, and affordable accommodations whether someone is in need of something to drink or eat, looking for something to do, or a place to stay.

Osage Motel & Lounge is located on the east side of Osage on the north side of HWY 218. They have 18 motel rooms and a lounge where they serve drinks and food such as pizzas

and corn dogs. Within the bar and lounge area they have Cherry Master Machines, MegaTouch Quarter Ma-chines, 2 pool tables, a dart board, an ATM and plenty of room for the peo-ple to come in and play games such as cribbage or to watch sporting events on television. They also have a variety of tourism information and pamphlets, and sell lottery tickets.

Olaf Staff built the motel in 1952 and started with 8 rooms and a living quarters. At that time rooms were around $2 per night. In 1954 5 rooms were added and then another 5 were added in 1975. In 1976 Ron and Donna were living in Indiana at the time when his sister who was living in Osage called them and said the motel was for sale. Ron and Donna purchased the motel and have been running it ever since! Over the years they have added on, remodeled and have been progressive in keeping up with the times such as adding cable

tv and wireless internet.

In 2000 the bar was added to the motel, which has been a great addi-tion since someone is always onsite for managing the motel. They host coed pool leagues – Minnesota Pool League on Wednesday nights and Charles City Pool Leagues on Thursday nights. Each Saturday night they have an open pool tourna-ment starting at 7pm.

They are open 7 days a week open-ing at 7 am every day except Sunday when they open at 7:30am. Word of mouth has been their most effective advertising. They also sponsor 5 pool teams, 2 bowling teams, 1 softball team, and three derby cars – one in Nashua, Osage and Deer Creek.

Ron and Donna have 2 part time em-ployees and their son, Randy, who also helps with maintenance, staffing the bar and with a variety of other odd jobs around the business. Their daughter Shelley, who lives in Portland, Oregon, designed their website (www.osagemotel.com).

FEBRUARY 2017 LIBRARY LIMELIGHT

The library needs your help. We are undertaking an investment opportunity to

keep our library going and growing. We are able to set money aside in a Commu-

nity Foundation Fund that will give back to the library as the investment grows.

The library is asking the people of our community to help out by donating to our

fund. Any amount you contribute is very much appreciated, but if you contribute $100.00 or more you are eligible to

receive a 25% state tax credit, in addition to the federal deductions for charitable gifts. Our goal is to raise $2,500.00 or

more over the next two years. Please be generous, the more we add to our fund the more the community of Elma and the

surrounding area benefit from the prosperity of the library. Stop in the library to fill out a donation card or to find out how

you can help the library.

A STRONG LIBRARY HELPS MAKE A STRONG COMMUNITY. LET'S BE STRONG TOGETHER! THANK YOU!

Corn and Beans As of this writing cash corn is $3.26. Cash soybeans are $9.88. Corn is $.17 higher and soybeans are $.33 higher than a month ago. March corn has support at $3.62 and then at $3.57. Resistance is at $3.67 and then at $3.72. March soybeans have support at $10.65 and then at $10.47. Resistance is at $10.82 and then at $11.00. The USDA report on the 12th was bullish for soybeans, positive for wheat and neutral for corn. The U.S. corn and soybean crop did not get bigger. The soybean crop came in 54 million bushels less than last month and corn came in 78 million bushels less than last month. Winter wheat acreage was 3.7 million acres less than last month. If correct U.S. winter wheat farmers planted the smallest number of acres since 1909. One analyst is now looking for U.S.

soybean acres to increase by as much as 6 million acres for 2017. The first official report of farmer planting intentions will be the USDA’s March 31 crop report. Corn and soybean carryover numbers increased over a year ago. Demand and usage have increased also. Carryover as a percentage of usage is much more important to me than just a bushel number. Prices are still in a trading range and likely to continue the same as we work thru the winter doldrums. Use rallies in soybeans to lock in prices just in case planted acres do increase as much as 6 million acres. Corn seasonally rallies in April, May & June. Use seasonal rallies to price corn. The question is what could change the market: South America’s weather good or bad, a trade war with China or Mexico or both. Feel free to stop in and discuss your marketing plans with Brad, Bruce, Sam, or

myself. Doug Uthe

Cattle As of this writing, cash cattle are $1.20, up from last month. February and April Futures continue to hold a $12 and $10 premium to deferred

futures.

Hogs As of this writing, cash hogs are $47, up from last month. Packers are cautiously looking for more pigs as product values have slipped in value

and demand recently.
