The sidewalk, which runs parallel to Seventh Avenue, has been a problem for lo- cals, especially the disabled who uses it daily. Christopher Lane, the chairperson of the Civic As- sociation of Rondebosch East (Care), says the area has more residents who are disabled than any other ward. “The problem is that when residents want to im- prove their property by add- ing on a garage or paving, it messes with the pavement, causing the levels of the sidewalk to be out of bal- ance. “Plenty of walkers, jog- gers and disabled people use these pavements everyday and they have to step about 250 millimetres off the ground to avoid the bumps along the way. Most of them proceed to use the street, to avoid twisting an ankle or injuring themselves,” he says. People’s Post visited the problem roads and saw that there was mostly no proper paving. The “pavement” in ques- tion are indentations which assists motorists in pulling their cars onto their proper- ties. The Woodside Sanctuary, which is situated in Lawson Road, has invalid patients who regularly use the road. Public relations officer of the organisation, Cheryl Beaton, says that children are forced to use the roads because of the condition of the pavements. “It is not the ideal situa- tion to have our children use the roads because it does impact on their safety. They are always accompa- nied by a nurse who pushes them, but even then it poses a safety risk as motorists would swerve to miss them and end up on the other side of the road,” she says. Ward councillor Anthea Green, says that the roads are a major problem in the area. “Residents have built on- to the pavement. It’s high and people have to step up onto it, which makes it un- usable for those who are disabled. “To build onto the pave- ment like that, you need to get permission from the City. Once a site inspection has been done, the resident will receive a letter and they have 30 days to either re- move what they’ve built, or respond in kind,” she says. Green adds that if after 30 days the resident has not yet responded, another 14 days is added, before the City re- moves what has been built. Seventh Avenue’s bumpy trail

Dear reader,

Thank you for your warm response to mycolumn. The first thing you’ll notice thisweek is that I have a different picture in my“ConnectED” logo; and you’ll wonder why.

I can explain. I’ve learnt fast that whenyou’re in the public eye, albeit as a byline orpicture credit, feedback and criticism be-come your second and third names. You learnto “roll with the punches”, “hit the groundrunning” and, when warranted, “give as goodas you get”. The strategy, though, should be

to extract value from the many noises (oftenwell-meaning) being made, and not to takeeverything personally; easier said than done.

The lesson I learnt fromusingan“arty”pic-ture is that interpretation is subjective andthat often consensus is your best guide. I stillhave my own views, though, about the perfect

picture, based on my negative self-perceptionthat I am not photogenic. In fact, I often tellpeople that I look better in person.

That said, having listened well to feedbackfrom key colleagues, including my boss, anda contact (once a friend) who reckons I look“worried” in last week’s photo, I’ve changedmy picture. I may yet change it again...

On to more entertaining topics: namely theCape Town International Jazz Festival, which brought the city to life this weekendand saw local and international acts sharingthe stage.

My first time at this, the 13th annual festi-val, was made more magical by my “tourguide” and esteemed Media24 colleague, Nielle Roux, who showed me the ropes at the festi-val, taking me to, among others, a “jazz rave”outside the Cullinan Hotel. Niel is a hard actto follow and as we traipsed around the CapeTown International Convention Centre, I waspleased I had worn comfortable high heels –although a dress that was deliberately a bittoo long nearly saw me tumbling down esca-lators. I don’t favour crowds and I’m knownto walk out of full supermarkets despite my

“must” shoppinglist, but consider-ing the magnitudeof the festival andattendance, I didnot feel claustro-phobic or uncom-fortable whilestanding shoulder-to-shoulder withthousands of well-heeled strangers –until some moronhad the audacity to touch my backside anddisappear in a flash before I could turn myrage on him/her. That didn’t ruin my experi-ence, though, nor dilute my appreciation ofCape Town as a truly world class city we areprivileged to be citizens of. We have provenour ability to unite, be creative and work to-gether towards a common goal. Admittedly,we have our flaws, like any society, but thecountless positives and good outweigh theshortcomings. I wish you all a blessed andsafe Easter. If you’re planning a road trip, please take your vehicle for safety checks be-forehand.

Till next time, go well!ConnectED is a weekly column, by Peo-

ple’s Post Editor, Feroza Miller-Isaacswho can be contacted on [email protected]

EXECUTIVE members ofProudly Manenberg claim to

have been dismissed without anyconstitutional basis.

Former organising secretary ofthe non-governmental organisa-tion, Larenzo Morris, says that hewas given the boot on Tuesday 13March. “A few other members andI were fired from the organisationjust because we disagree with thestatus quo. There was no discipli-nary hearing, and the unfair dis-missals have left several employeesstruggling with no salaries earnedfor three consecutive months,” hesays.

Morris claims that the dismissalsof the employees have negatively af-fected the organisation’s productiv-ity, operations and delivery to thecommunity. “Our demands areclear – a right to the organisation, and a right to the community Wa-terfront. We also want to be com-pensatedand reinstatedwith imme-diate effect, as we are victims of apolitical witch hunt and an ambi-tious personal agenda by our lead-ers,” he says.

However, the chairperson of theorganisation, Mario Wanza, saysthe decision to dismiss Morris wasmade because of his behaviour.“Larenzo’s relationship with the or-

ganisation was terminated due tohis lack of discipline and commit-ment to Proudly Manenberg. Thisdecision was taken by the organisa-tion’s constitutional structures,”he says. In an attempt to serve thecommunity without the help ofProudly Manenberg, Morris, to-gether with other former employ-ees, formed a campaign calledManenberg United. “We are in noway attempting to vilify or defameProudly Manenberg as we are disci-plined members and custodians ofthe constitution of the organisa-tion. But we are an advocacy groupthat is aiming to rid ProudlyManenberg of its flawed ways,”says Morris.

Another member who was “un-fairly dismissed” from ProudlyManenberg’s security project in2009, Robin Roberts, says that be-fore being taken off the project, heworked for the organisation for twoyears. “I was managing the projectwith them; monthly meetings wereheld until I was cut off. Things at theorganisation changed and youcould feel the tension in the meet-ings that were held.

“Mario has the potential to upliftManenberg, but he chases away allthe good people as soon as some-thing is questioned – then theymake a plan to get rid of them,” hesays.

Morris says that he contacted theCommission for Conciliation, Me-diation and Arbitration (CCMA) tosettle the unfair dismissal claims, and a hearing has been set forThursday 19 April.

SUMMER JACOBS

THERE is a ray of sunshinebeaming from 14 Lugano Court, shedding light on HanoverPark. This light comes in theform of Mogammat Gasant Ab-bass, an innovative residentwho is always seeking ways touplift his community.

Gasant (46), who works as a fa-cility manager at William HerbertSports Grounds in Wynberg, re-cently organised a brunch for theseniors of Lugano Court with thehelp of his neighbours.

His wife Fatima, along with vol-unteers from the court, preparedall sorts of refreshments anddrinks for the over 60s.

Gasant explains that severalyears ago, in a bid to keep a cleanand safe environment for chil-dren, he started a small operationto support each house by keepingthe court clean and washing thebins. From there it expanded tohaving brunch for the seniors.

“We invited over 40 senior citi-zens to come and converse withtheir fellow neighbours while en-joying some savouries. We do thisfor the senior citizens as a way tosay thank you for being the custo-dians of good old-fashioned val-ues,” he says.

Regarding children as the mainfocus, Gasant says that concernedparents formed a parent commit-tee three weeks ago.

“We have seen positive resultssince we started the committee. We patrol the area at night and sitin spots where the youth usuallyloiter. We have also given the chil-drena 22:00 curfewwhichhasbeenquite effective. When they see uscoming they tend to run home be-cause they know we know theirparents and will report back tothem,” chuckles Gasant.

However, he takes no credit andstresses that changing things forthe better is hard work that cannotbe accomplished by one manalone, but by a community work-ing in unison.

Last year Gasant, his brotherFaheem and neighbour FariedKarriem founded the East EndUnitedFootballClub. “Itwas start-ed initially to get children off thestreet by giving them somethingmore productive to do with theirtime. Sport is a good medium toteach the youth discipline,”he ex-plains.

Since then, the club has becomea fully registered member of theAthlone Heideveld Local FootballAssociation and have increasedfrom four junior teams to seven, and from two senior teams tothree.

However, since the club wasfounded by the trio, they reach in-to their own pockets to furnish theclub with its needs. They urge any-one who is able to donate anysports equipment to contact themas they are in dire need.

“Most parents work long hours,so children are left unattended fora large part of the day. Add to thisthe number of school drop-outsand you get an alarming figure.

This is why we focus on childrenbecause they can still be steered inthe right direction. When they arebrought up properly they becomeresponsible adults which in turncreates a better community,” Gas-ant says.

Gasant’s invaluable service tothe community has been recog-nised as he was nominated bymembers of the community for aHanover Park Community Serv-ice Award. He walked away withthe Administration in SportsAward, one of only five in thesports category.

Sitting in the living room of theAbbass’ household, Boeta Gam-mat Brink, head of the neighbour-hood watch, listens in silence toall that is said.

When asked for his opinion onGasant he says: “Gasant is a goodperson and we appreciate him forall the good he has done in thecommunity. When anything isneeded by the children they justseem to gravitate towards number14.”

Taxi troubles. Get your facts in order, Mr

Loonat. If you don’t understandhow it works in the taxi indus-try, keep quiet. From a proudpermit holder

. Mr Loonat, please don’t in-terfere with taxi business. Youneed to focus on the currentcrime in the community. Leaveour livelihood alone. Stop listen-ing to opportunists and para-sites and stick to your portfolio.

. I want to remind you that weas taxi owners have built upthese businesses and routes over120 years already. We have givenblood, sweat and tears buildingup this industry to where it is to-day. We have been doing thiswithout a government subsidyand are currently transporting70% of the population, daily. Weare in competition against Gold-en Arrow that enjoys over R700million per annum, so just imag-ine if the taxi industry got thatsubsidy – we would have givena much better service. We couldask our customers if they wantchicken or beef! The new driversmust not capitalise on our breadand butter as we also provide anincome to the drivers, sliding-door operators and the rankmarshals. The Taxi Board is cor-rect in not supplying new per-mits on the oversaturatedroutes, and for those who camein the taxi industry yesterday, you have no chance to steal ourbusiness from us.

Experience vs age. I am in my mid-fifties and

have been struggling to find a jobfor the past three years. I share“Desperate’s” sentiments (YourSMSes, People’s Post, 27 March). Are there any companies thatare able to assist in temporary orcontract work for “senior teen-agers”? Our country needs expe-rienced people. We are reliable,we don’t have boyfriends, girl-friends orbabyproblems.Wearehighly committed, but becauseof our age we are overlooked. Please help. Desperate 2

. “Desperate”, I can relate toyour SMS. If you are over 40 youcan forget about finding employ-ment unless you know people inhigh places. I matriculated at 41and spent money on computercourses to empower myself.Three years down the line I stilldon’t have a job. ShihaamWilkinson

Commuter complaints. First class coaches are emp-

ty and third class coaches arefull. Ticket collectors are rudeand dishonest. The constantapologies about late trains con-tinueandnow there areplans fora price hike. They make the taxiindustry look good. From a fed-up latecomer

. I totally agree with the peo-ple complaining about Metro-Fail – they sure don’t discrimi-nate. They deliver a rubbishservice to everyone. There’s nosecurity!

By the way. What negative significance

does theword“Lansdowne”holdthat requires Lansdowne Road’sname to be changed, but not thearea called Lansdowne?

SINCE Sunday, Metrorail pas-sengers have been forking out13% more for their tickets. Theinitial price hike was set at 27%when Metrorail recently an-nounced the increase.

The parastatal then had a changeof heart after criticism from Co-satu, the national transport depart-ment and the business community, among others.

The rail service is adamant thatthe price hike was inevitable andnecessary due to increasing energycosts, maintenance material, sala-ries of employees as well as ratesand taxes for stations.

Metrorail regional managerMthuthuzeli Swartz says commut-ers most affected by the hike are

those who buy weekly and singletickets. “Monthly ticket buyers willget a reprieve, for three months, through a 15 percent discount.”

The says Metrorail’s currentfunding pot, consisting of govern-ment subsidy allotment and farebox, does not cover operationalcosts.

Swartz also assured commutersthat the decision to raise fares wastaken with “full cognisance of thefact that rail transports the majori-ty of public transport users”.

Metrorail has also suffered at thehands of vandals. Since Januarythis year 18 train coaches have beentorched, costing the parastatal R24million.

Cosatu’s provincial secretary,Tony Ehrenreich, welcomed the re-vised price hike.

“It is a great achievement to have

been able to get the percentage from27 to 13 percent.

“We welcome any measures thatassist commuters and Cosatu willencourage commuters to make useof the measures.”

Meanwhile, the Cape Chamber ofCommerce and Industry welcomedthe concession made by Metrorail, saying business was particularlyhappy with the revised fares.

Gordon Metter, the deputy presi-dent of the Chamber, says: “We wel-come the revised pricing structureand believe it to be of great benefitto workers and employers alike.”

Metter however tempered thegood news by reminding Metrorailthat business was deeply concernedabout the reliability of the serviceand called on labour, business andMetrorail to join forces to find a so-lution.

IF YOU are one of those people who col-lect 5 cent coins in a jar, you should knowthat the coins are now officially off theproduction line.

Government announced in November lastyear that the coins would be discontinued onSunday (1 April).

The existing ten cent coin will also seesome changes.

It will be the same size, but the metal con-tent will change from bronze-plated steel tocopper-plated steel, making it cheaper to pro-duce.

But don’t panic – the mint will still remaina legal tender and will still be circulated, which means that shops and banks are stillobliged to continue to accept the 5c coins.

The mint will join the one and two centcoins which was was discontinued ten yearsago.

The result was that all cash transactionswere rounded off to the nearest five cents.

Ina Wilken, a renowned consumer activistand member of the South African NationalConsumer Forum, says the coin will then au-tomatically be phased out as time progresses.“I am not sure what the rationale was behindthis decision – it might be very costly to pro-duce 5c coins and a 5c coin cannot buy

much.”Regarding the 10 cent coin, Wilken con-

firmed that the design will not change at alland the size will also remain the same.

“This will also come into effect on Sunday1 April but the old coins will definitely stillbe in use.”

Tanya Helling, who collects 5 cent coins, was surprised when she heard about the 5cent not being produced any more.

“I just started keeping the 5 cents becauseeveryone was throwing them away. Youcan’t buy anything with it. I was just plan-ning to take them to a shop one day and ex-change them, so I am glad shops are still ac-cepting them.

“It would have been a total heart break ifthey didn’t”.

Jeremy has been ina wheelchair for 14years after he wasparalysed in a climbing accident on Ta-ble Mountain when he was 46. Over theyears he has learnt that embracing op-portunities and living a full life are es-sential to inner peace. Doing the TwoOceans is a physical and mental chal-lenge, and with your support, this chal-lenge will benefit disabled people lessfortunate than myself.

Jeremy will be raising funds forSenecio, which is a team of dedicatedoccupational and physiotherapistswho work with many children with se-vere disabilities.

Alex Boettger lives with his motherAndrea and brother Dylan in Sunval-ley. The Alex Boettger Trust was set up

THE southern peninsula is set to receivea wave of good news in June this year, when the Future Factory Good News Cy-cle Tour travels through the area.

The tour will see Anne Siroky, formerSouth African volleyball player, and as manyas ten other people, cycling hundreds of kilo-metres through the southern metropole ofCape Town and stopping in several impover-ished areas to highlight the positives whichhave occurred amongst all of the negatives.

According to Siroky, her reason for draw-ing attention to the good things which haveoccurred in these areas is to try to inspire oth-er people in similar situations to do the same.

“So if we stop, for example, in Ocean View,we don’t want to concentrate on the badthings that happen in the place,” said Siroky.

“I think if we start talking to people aboutthe greatness that is happening in their area, they will actually realise that they can taketheir area back. And the gangsters and druglords don’t have to continue ripping our chil-dren apart.

“There arepeoplewhowant to change theirlives, so why can’t the cycle tour focus on thatfor a change?”

The tour is being run by Future Factory,a non-profit organisation started by Siroky in2001 after she retired from volleyball.

Siroky played both indoor and beach vol-leyball duringher career and sinceher retire-ment she has run sport-related communityorientated projects around Cape Town.

She was named as the Shoprite CheckersSABC2 Woman of the Year for Sport in 2007,

was the Western Cape winner of the Old Mu-tual Sowetan SABC Community Builder ofthe Year award that same year, and is alsoa recipient of the Imvusa Foundation’s Com-munity Spirit Award.

Siroky came up with the Good News CycleTour as a way to celebrate the tenth anniver-sary of the formation of the Future Factory.

Apart from spreading good news, the tourwill also aim to raise R1 000 for every one ofthe 1 600 kilometres that will be covered.

Siroky says that the funds will be used forfuture projects for the organisation and pos-sibly to help the areas that the tour will passthrough.

“We might want to return to Ocean View, for example, and take some equipment tothose areas. Like we know there are some ofthose schools who play Volley Ball,” saidSiroky.

“And also to go and look at the needs. May-be a R1 000 can sort out someone’s needs inthat area.”

The Good News Cycle Tour will start at theCollege of Cape Town Wynberg Campus onFriday 1 June and then wind its way throughthe southern peninsula before setting off forWorcester and returning to Cape Town.

Siroky added that the Cycle Tour would bethe last major project she coordinated withthe Future Factory before embarking on anew business venture.

According to Siroky her new business willhelp to fund further projects for the FutureFactory.

THE last day of the eleventh an-nual Kensington AFC Youth Cupwent right down to the wire onSunday as penalties were re-quired to find champions in boththe plate and winner’s sectionsof the Under 15 tournament.

The Youth Cup features both anU11 and a U15 competition andstarted on Friday with the 16 teamsfrom each age group divided in fourgroups of four.

The top two finishers in eachgroup advanced to the winner’squarterfinals, while the bottomthird and fourth placed teams ad-vanced to the plate quarter finals.

In the plate section Gugulethuside Shining Stars won their shoot-out against Mitchell’s Plain teamMr Price Parkhust Academy 2-0 inthe final, while Pinelands-basedOld Mutual Academy beat LuckyStars, also of Gugulethu, 4-3 in thewinner’s section final.

Roger Links, head of youth devel-opment at Old Mutual, said that hewas happy with the victory but ad-mitted that his team were capableof playing better football.

“It’s a final; it’s not what we ex-pect it to be because the kids arevery tired at this stage. So the quali-ty of the football wasn’t up to whatit’s supposed to be,” said Links.

“I think, all in all, we are happythat we won. It’s always good for theacademy to be seen to be winning.Success always breeds success.”

Shining Stars qualified for the fi-nal after beating Everton United inthe quarter-finals and Vasco daGama in the semis, whileParkhurst knocked out NorwayPark and George United to claim aspot.

Lucky Stars made their way tothe final by first beating the tourna-ment hosts and then knocking outFire Fighters, and eventual cham-pions Old Mutual first beat CPUT inthe quarters and then Ajax in thesemis.

According to Links, his teamplayed their best football in theknockout stages of the competition.

“Our semi-final against Ajax wasprobably our best match. I think, football wise, that was the bestmatch of our tournament,” saidLinks. “We started off very slowly, and I think we got better as the tour-nament went on. On the last day Ithink we played our best football.Friday and Saturday were very me-

diocre but we got better.”In the Under 11 competition, the

final of the plate section ended in a2-1 victory by CPUT over NorwayParks, while the Old Mutual U11s

also claimed the winner’s trophy af-ter defeating Fire Fighters 1-0.

The tournament was held at theRoyal Road sportsfields in Mait-land.
