A new campaign, called #Gangsterism- MustFall, is an effort to “keep out violent crimes and violent actions in the area”, says Grassy Park police station commander Colo- nel Shawn van Wyk. “This campaign was started with the in- tention of ridding our areas of gangsters and violent crimes related to gangsterism. Report crime A plea was also made to residents in re- gard to giving police information relating to criminal activities in the area. Van Wyk sug- gests that information on hideouts, stolen property and illegal firearms, which are big generators of crime, should be communicat- ed to police. “We need assistance to make arrests in our policing precinct but we can only do this with the help of our residents. This is cur- rently a struggle because people sit with in- formation but are too afraid to come for- ward. We do urge them to do so and in so doing we can make arrests and rid our area of crime,” he adds. Van Wyk says there is a reward system in place for the information given to police and the successful conviction of suspects. With regard to shootings in the precinct, Van Wyk says sporadic shootings have tak- en place in the Ottery area. “Our latest incident was on Sunday [last week] in Ottery but no case was reported. Our current hotspots are in Parkwood, Ottery, Lotus River and New Horizons.” V Continued on page 2. Community police forum (CPF)

    spokesperson Philip Bam says the

    campaign is a good initiative.

Gangsterism is a problem that can

be solved around the dinner table. If

families speak to their children the

problems our society faces can easily

be sorted at home, Bam says.

Bam says the CPF will also help in

getting the campaign to work in the

    community.

We are looking at handing out

    pamphlets at schools, churches,

    mosques and various organisations.

We want to create a sense of aware-

ness and alertness in our communi-

    ties, he says.

Bam adds a secondary hashtag has

been added to the campaign, namely

    #SeeSomethingSaySomething.

Our communities need to get into

the habit of reporting crimes. We will

be increasing the call for this through

    the campaign, he says.

Bam further adds that a lot still

needs to be done to address gangster-

    ism in the country.

We also need to stop making our-

selves soft targets for crime. We are

    gluttons for punishment by allowing

    these crimes tohappenandnot report-

    ing it, Bam concludes.

The Moravian Church Floral Ministry in

The showwill be hosted at the Lansdowne

Moravian School hall in Church Street,

    Lansdowne on Saturday 6 February.

he Cape Town Science Centre (CTSC) in

    Observatory will be introducing in-

structional signage in braille on some of its

key exhibits to enhance the experience for

    sight-impaired visitors.

This initiative will be marked by a visit

from the Athlone School for the Blind

which will be facilitated by Wanda Diaz-

    Merced, a sight-impaired PhD computer

    scientist and astronomer who translated

the instructions of the centres interactive

    exhibits into braille.

We have worked hard to include as

much material as possible in the form of

braille explanations and tactile models (in-

cluding 3D-printed models) to enhance the

pupils experience. I walked through the

centremyself, as a blind person, to evaluate

the current experience offered and de-

signed tools that will be especially useful

    to the pupils.

As hard as we have tried to enhance

their experience though, there is stillmuch

that can be done and we hope that this is

only the beginning of a process to make

    mathematics and sciencemore inclusive to

    people with disabilities, she says.

CTSC is Cape Towns only hands-on sci-

ence centre established to educate and cre-

ate awareness around science and technol-

ogy, to excite visitors and contribute to

    strengthening a culture of science.

    Busisiwe Maqubela, chief operations of-

ficer of the CTSC, says: For our centre, we

believe this is a very important step for-

ward. We would welcome the input of any

local expert onmaking the exciting science

    and technology-themed exhibits and expe-

riences in our centre more accessible to

    those with disabilities.

The Centre, now in its 16th year, has a

    mission tomake ahands-on contribution to

South Africas future by strengthening its

science and technology culture through in-

teractive methods of teaching: to excite the

youth and general public about science,

    and offer educational services.

    GRASSY PARK

    Pedals against perps

    CHEVON BOOYSEN

    @ChevonBooysen

    B

icycle patrols will now be a more fre-

quent sight in the Grassy Park policing

precinct as police have set out to pedal their

    way to curb crime.

Bike patrols in the area kicked off two

    weeksago inaneffort to increasepolicevisi-

    bility in the area.

    Grassy Park police station commander

Colonel Shawn van Wyk says the patrols

were initiated so the police may bemore ac-

cessible to the public as well.

We have a few bicycles in the area oper-

ating and we have sectors alternating these

bike patrols. We are using this initiative to

fill the gap of our limited resources, he

    says.

Van Wyk adds bicycles that were distrib-

uted to neighbourhood watches in the area

are also currently being used by police offi-

    cers.

Philip Bam, chairperson of the Commu-

nity Police Forum, says they are happy to

    seemore is beingdone to increasepolicevis-

    ibility.

However, wewill still call on the authori-

    ties tomakemore resources available inour

    area.Wewantmore resources becausewhat

we currently have in our area is not suffi-

cient for the reality of our crime situation

in the Grassy Park area, Bam says.

Grassy Park residents are happy to

see police patrols are now also being

    done on bicycles, as demonstrated

    here by Constable Widaad Lambert

    and Sergeant Ricardo Snyman.

    NANTES PARK

    Free concert on Sunday

    EARL HAUPT

    @EarlHaupt

    R

esidents are in for a special treat this

weekend as the popular Concerts in the

Park event heads to Nantes Park inAthlone

    on Sunday.

The free concert, which starts at 15:00,

will showcase the local talents Jimmy Ne-

vis, the Rudimentals and Sweet Resistance.

Concerts in the Park, now in its sixth

year, brings local performers to public

parks around the city to entertain residents

in free concerts for the communities who

    live close to the parks.

The initiative grew to such a degree that

the current programme had to be extended

from November to April to incorporate

parks in Bellville (Jack Muller Park), Wyn-

    berg, Khayelitsha and Gugulethu.

These additional venues will make it pos-

sible for thousands of Capetonians from all

suburbs to experience the outdoor perform-

    ances for the first time.

    Local support act

Before the main event on Sunday, the

Bridgetown Theatre Company (BTC), in as-

    sociation with Pulse Entertainment, will

provide the local support act at 13:00.

BTC will feature the youth band the

Young Visitors and with their all-female

    young singing sensations Tanya Johnson,

Jesse Simons and Zoe Daniels. All these

    young performers are from Bridgetown,

    Heideveld, Kewtown and Athlone.

More than 200 000 visitors have attended

the various concerts over the last five years.

The initiative is officially supported by

    mayor Patricia de Lille.

The vision for Concerts in the Park is to

foster community building. The fact that

these hugely popular concerts are free and

hosted in public parks means that people

from all backgrounds can come together to

    enjoy them, she says.

These concerts feature some of the fore-

most musical talent in the country and

bring thousands of people to the Citys pub-

lic parks. This initiative has enjoyed much

success and has been a lively addition to

Cape Towns event calendar for the past five

years, says Belinda Walker, mayoral com-

    mitteemember for community services and

    special projects.

Increasing the positive use of our public

spaces is something we as a City strive to-

    wards.

Now, Concerts in the Park has also be-

    come affiliated to environmental education.

Two organisations akin to the concert ve-

nues are Seed and South African environ-

    mental and education projects (SAEP).

Seeds programme has made a contribu-

    tion through its hands-on grow-it-yourself-

    feed-yourself educational programme to

residents of Mitchells Plain. SAEP, in-

    volved in several community programmes,

    is similarlymakingacontribution to theup-

    liftment of lives in Philippi.

Grassy Park residents can enjoy the free music performances of Concerts in the Park in

Athlone this weekend. More than 200 000 people have attended the series of concerts.

Salesian Institutes youth projects will be

    hosting training for unemployed young-

    sters in office management, computer

    maintenance and repair, bricklaying, til-

ing and laminated flooring as well as sew-

    ing.

Courses cost up to R150 and require be-

tween Grade 9 and 12, depending on the

    course.

The courses will start on 29 March, 30

May, 10 August and 10 October.

To register, you will need your identity

    document, proof of schooling completed

and the cost of the coursewhere applicable.

    Database for jobless

    CHEVON BOOYSEN

    @ChevonBooysen

    A

job campaign kicked off in ward 60 in

    the Lansdowne area on Wednesday

    last week.

In an effort to empower unemployed

residents in the area, proportional repre-

    sentative councillor Mark Kleinschmidt

set up shop at the Flamingo Crescent in-

formal settlement, ready to capture de-

    tails of interested parties.

We have started this initiative to alle-

viate the 35% unemployment rate in our

    country.

We are focusing on our unemployed

residents and getting them onto a data-

base where their information will be

    shared with potential employers, Klein-

    schmidt says.

The database will be made available

nationally so that all avenues of employ-

    ment can be explored.

What we are trying to do is restore the

dignity of our unemployed sector and

find ways around how they have been af-

fected by being unemployed. Other is-

sues we also look at is how long these

people have been unemployed and take

    it from there, Kleinschmidt says.

We want our people to be able to put

food on their tables at the end of the day

and earn an honest living. We have kick-

ed off our first phase and so far we have

about 50 people on the database, but this

is growing as word of mouth spreads,

    he says.

    Kleinschmidt explains signing up for

the database is free of charge.

These people we are looking at are of-

ten the ones who struggle to come by re-

sources to apply for jobs themselves. We

will be sending out CVs to assist these

people who come to us for help and look

at an integrated approach to make this

    successful, Kleinschmidt says.

The campaign has been introduced in

    wards 48, 49, 58 and 59 as well.

    Donate milk for babies

    I

n the high-techworld of themodern neona-

tal ICU there is no substitute for breast

milk. When a vulnerable babys mother is

unable to supply breastmilk, donated breast

milk can offer this life-saving gift from an-

    other mother.

Neonatologist Dr Alan Horn of Groote

Schuur Hospital says: I firmly believe that

the practice of milk banking is still in its in-

fancy, globally and especially in South Afri-

ca. I expect it will steadily increase in pro-

    file.

Donating breast milk is an act that in-

volves the least pain and themost gain, com-

pared to any other human tissue or organ

donation. It is potentially life-saving and is

worth more than equipment or staff. The

term milk bank is perfect it simultane-

ously describes the safety and the value of

    donated milk.

Milk Matters is such a breast milk bank

devoted to saving the lives of primarily pre-

mature babies in neonatal ICUs who do not

have access to their own mothers milk. It

has depots in locations around the city, in-

cluding Diep River, Retreat and Muizen-

    berg.

The need for donor milk is mainly when

a mother is too ill to provide breast milk or

is unable to physically be with or regularly

visit her baby in hospital. Donor milk may

also be needed for a short time in the case

of multiple births such as triplets, when the

    mothermay initiallynothave enoughbreast

    milk for her babies.

Already the demand for donormilk far ex-

ceeds supplies and requests from doctors for

    donor milk continue to increase.

    MilkMatters, a registered non-profit orga-

    nisation, started providing donor breast

milk to the neonatal ICUs of Cape Towns

biggest state hospitals in 2003. To date 30 hos-

pitals, in both the state and private sector,

    have received donormilk fromMilkMatters

and in addition the organisation has helped

five hospitals set up their own in-housemilk

banks. Most of the donormilk goes to babies

in state hospitals, where the need is highest.

Since just 50ml of breast milk can feed a

baby of less than a kg for 24 hours, mothers

do not need to donate large quantities of

breast milk to make a significant impact.

Some donor mothers make once-off dona-

tions of stockpiled milk that is not required

for their own baby, whilst othermothers do-

nate for periods varying from a few weeks

    to a year or more.

Milk Matters provides donors with sterile

containers, which can be collected from one

    of the 25depots,wherebatches of frozenmilk

can also be delivered. All milk is pasteur-

    ised.

Milk Matters is a registered non-profit or-

    ganisation.

You can donate breast milk for needy babies at a milk bank in your area. A local doctor says

donated breast milk is potentially lifesaving. PHOTO: MILK MATTERS

val will be the host of this years J&B

The Met is South Africas longest

standing horse race and attracts the

whos who of the social scene who

City steps up race for bad drivers

    EARL HAUPT

    @EarlHaupt

    R

    eckless road users beware.

The City of Cape Town has mobilised

18members of its law enforcement unit, traf-

fic service and the Western Cape traffic de-

partment to form a specialised roadblock

unit to curb unlawful behaviour on Cape

    Towns roads.

According to the City, the roadblock unit

memberswill focus on enforcing the lawand

tracking suspects wanted for crimes and

    outstanding warrants.

The unit was initially deployed on Thurs-

    day night.

During the operation, 387 cars were

stopped. Drivers were screened for alcohol

with six drivers being arrested for drunk

driving. One driver was arrested for six

drunk driving cases, another driver was ar-

rested for reckless and negligent driving,

while one person was arrested for resisting

arrest. A taxi was also impounded.

A further 147 offences were charged at

    various points throughout the area.

122 vehicles exceeded the speed limit in

    Klipfontein Road during the operation,

with the highest speed being recorded at

145km/h. 202 vehicles overstepped the le-

    gal speed limit on JakesGerwelDrive,with

the highest speed clocked at 154km/h.

There were also infringements in Stik-

land, with 87 vehicles speeding, the highest

    speed being 148km/h.

The unit will work with the traffic servi-

ces ghost squad from time to time, with an

invitation also extended to the police to

    join the initiative.

The unit will be responsible for road-

blocks on a permanent basis across the

city, with a specific focus on drinking and

driving, stolen cars and illegal street rac-

    ing.

They will detect and seize illegal fire-

arms and drugs and work to track down

    people with outstanding warrants and

    those wanted by the police.

Roadblocks are an integral policing tool,

but in recent years our services have been

    stretchedbyan increasingworkload.The re-

sult is that we have not been able to have as

many roadblocks aswewould like. This unit

is a step towards rectifying that situation,

says JP Smith, mayoral committee member

    for safety and security.

The City of Cape Towns metro police and traffic services, as well as police, mobilised on

Thursday night for the first operation of the Citys specialised roadblock unit.

    Reading saved his life

    W

hen Philani Dladla cracked open his

first book a heavy political read he

had no idea hed one day become a pub-

    lished author himself.

As a 12-year-old boy reading The Last

White Parliament by F van Zyl Slabbert, he

also had no inkling of the journey he would

have to endure to write his own book.

It was this journey that Dladla recently

shared at the Big Issue breakfast, and his

work to inspire others to start reading.

The regular breakfast event is used to

raise funds in support of the magazine.

    Dladla spent years sleepingunder theNel-

    son Mandela Bridge in Johannesburg,

trapped in drug addiction. Itwashis love for

books, inspired when he was 12, which ulti-

    mately saved him.

His first book was a gift on his birthday

from his mothers employer. Growing up in

rural KwaZulu Natal, Dladla could hardly

    speakEnglishwhen hewas given that book.

But he poured over it, intent on understand-

ing it and unlocking the promise of more

books. The book collection of his mothers

employer was later left to him.

In his early twenties, Dladla worked as a

health caregiver. But the freedom that came

with the pay cheque saw him experiment-

    ing with drugs.

It was something I didnt have before. I

was overwhelmed by the independence, he

    says.

His addiction soon spiralled out of con-

trol, and he started selling his possessions

to buy drugs when he started running out

    of money.

Drugs changed my life. I depended on

them. I could go days without eating, but I

couldnt go four hours without drugs. I sold

my things and eventually, when I couldnt

pay my rent anymore, I was kicked out of

    my place, he says.

The only place Dladla felt he could go was

the bridge, where he lived with other drug

users. When he arrived, he was forced to

hand over his clothes as rent.

They toldme nothing is for nothing. Liv-

ing on the street is dangerous. People fight

over simple things. You see people dying

from drugs. Its every man for himself, he

    says.

But he managed to hang onto his books,

and eventually he started to sell them to

    make a living.

Dladla would review each book, selling

    them to passingmotoristswith prices deter-

mined by how good each book was.

I had nothing left. All I had were my

books. I had to work with what I had, he

    says.

One day, Dladla was spotted by a young

    filmmaker, who produced a documentary

    on his mobile bookshop.

It shared my story. By that time I was

nine months clean and running a soup

kitchen for my friends living under the

bridge with the money I would have spent

on drugs. I was also running a reading club

for children in Joubert Park, near where I

    lived, he says.

The documentary spurred an influx of do-

nations which allowed him to expand the

reading club and teach children computer

    skills.

Working with kids is always a nice expe-

rience. We read and I help themwith home-

    work, he says.

But he has had to leave some friends be-

    hind along the way.

Its hard to help someone who doesnt

want help. I had to leave my friends who do

drugs behind and focus on the reading

    clubs, he says.

Dladla has now told this journey in a

    book, The Pavement Bookworm.

I always dreamed I would be published.

When I was living on the street I would

write down everything that happened. hop-

ing one day someone would come and pub-

    lish it, he says.

But I didnt write it to make money. I

wrote it to tell the story. Ive always loved

telling stories and, even in the hard times,

putting a smile on someones face using

    books.

    Isolated lookout

    hill is unsafe

    SAMANTHA LEE

    @Samantha_lee121

    I

t was intended to honour people living

with Aids, but in recent months, a

monument on a picturesque hill has be-

    come a hotspot for loitering.

Themonument on the corner of Eisle-

ben Road and Baden Powell Drive was

launched by then mayor Helen Zille on

    1 December 2007.

But in recent weeks the Rocklands

site has been the scene of crime and ille-

    gal activity.

    Be vigilant

    Abie Isaacs, community police forum

chairperson, says they now regard the

lookout as a priority area, along with

several other spots along the coast.

The street and block committees do

patrol the area regularly. We are urging

    residents to remain vigilantwhile using

    the spot, says Isaacs.

He encourages residents to report any

    suspicious behaviour to law enforce-

    ment agencies.

Police confirm there have been sever-

al complaints of theft at the hill, which

is mainly used for leisure activities.

There have been some reported inci-

dents of crime emanating from that lo-

    cation.

A case of sexual assaultwas reported

in July 2015 and a case of possession of

    drugs in September 2015.

The venue is isolated and people are

advised against going there alone or

    evenat night, saysLieutenant IanWill-

    iams, police spokesperson.

    Vulnerable walk

    Criminals use every opportunity to

their advantage. There is only one path-

way up and down and this could present

difficulties to any visitors in terms of

    vulnerability.

There is also a challenge in terms of

lighting as the lights are not always

    working due to vandalism, continues

    Williams.

He has some further tips: It is best

to visit isolated lookout points in large

    groups. People should safeguard their

valuables and not display them openly.

If at any point one feels unsafe, it is best

to leave and return at another time if

    necessary.

V To report suspicious behaviour, call police on

    08600 10111.

    Survive aftermath of crash too

    I

ts your worst nightmare youve crashed.

It may be minor or serious, but at least

youre able to step out of the car. But now

    what?

The Automobile Association of South Af-

rica (AA) has compiled this guide.

    1. Keep safe

Before you or your passengers step out of

the car, check it is safe to do so. Round up

injured or bewildered occupants and lead

themto safety, somewhere off the road if pos-

    sible.

    2. Call for help

If you dont know the specific emergency

number for the area youre in, dial 112 on

    your cellphone.

    3. Help the injured

With the emergency services now on their

    way, givewhatever assistanceyou canwhile

you wait, but avoid trying to provide help

    beyond your capabilities.

    4. Dont compromise your legal position

Even if you were at fault, do not admit it

or make apologies which might be used as

    an admission of guilt.

    5. Record the scene and circumstances

When you take photos of the scene, in-

clude a wide view as well as the details of

    where cars came to rest.

When someone has been killed or in-

jured, you may not move the cars except

where the car is completely blocking the

road, orwith thepermissionof a traffic offi-

    cer.

Record street names. Dont forget to

    record the time of day.

    6. Record the cars and their drivers

Ensure your photographs include the li-

cence discs of each car and their registra-

tion plates. Record the make, model and

colour of each car. Clear photographs of

each side of each drivers licence will en-

sure you record the drivers details accu-

    rately.

    7. Look for witnesses

If there are bystanders, ask if they saw

the crash. If so, get their name and contact

numbers so that the police can takewitness

    statements if needed.

    8. Deal with other issues

Contact your insurance provider to ar-

range for your car to be towed.

    9. Report the crash to the police

You are required by law to report any

    crash within 24 hours.

Keep your wits about you after you have been in a car crash and record as much information

    as possible.

ifty years after the destruction of District

Six, David Kramer has assembled a tal-

ented cast to pay homage to the vibrant cul-

ture that once defined the area.

Over 60 000 residents were relocated from

District Six in the 1960s after it was declared

a white group area. A way of life was de-

stroyed. Today hardly anything remains of

what was once a thriving, densely populat-

    ed, multi-ethnic and multicultural commu-

    nity.

Eric Abraham and the Fugard Theatre, lo-

cated in District Six, will pay tribute to the

place and its people withDistrict Six Kana-

la, a musical directed by David.

    Whilepreviews start onTuesday2Februa-

ry already, the show will enjoy its premier

onThursday 11 February, exactly fifty years

    after the 1966 declaration.

David, who together with his theatre part-

ner Taliep Petersen created hugely success-

    ful musicals, likeDistrict Six,Fairyland and

Kat and the Kings, will celebrate the vibrant

musical culture found in the streets, halls,

hotels, clubs and bioscopes of 1960s District

    Six.

Kanalawill be myway of celebrating the

memory of some of the amazing talents from

District Six that I met and worked with over

the past three decades, he says. People like

Taliep, Salie Daniels, Cyril Valentine, Billy

    Jaftha, Dougie Schrikker, Al Hendricks,

ZaynAdam aswell as Richard Rive andVin-

    cent Kolbe.

    These stalwarts shared their recollections

of Distric Six with David, but a new genera-

tion of stars will bring their stories to the

    stage.

    The cast includes Loukmaan Adams,

Bianca le Grange, Carlo Daniels, Edith

    Plaatjies, SneDladla, NatashaHess andCleo

    Raatus.

They will be accompanied by a six-piece

live band under the leadership of saxophon-

ist DonVinoPrins and the guidance ofmusi-

    cal director Alistair Izobell.

    Tickets for the preview performances

from Tuesday 2 to Wednesday 10 February

cost R130 each when booking through the

box office on 021 461 4554. Tickets for the rest

of the run are available at Computicket.

HOW TO SELL A HOUSE THAT DIDN'T SELL

"... Before you put your home back on the market, take

a step back and review your situation ..."

4 Important Points that will get your house SOLD!

If your home has just come off the market and hasn't

sold, don't be discouraged. The reason it didn't sell

may have nothing to do with your home or the market.

In reality, your home may have been one of the more

desirable properties for sale. If your property listing

has expired and you still want results, before you put

your home back on the market, take a step back and

    review your situation.

    Sms/whatsapp "Expired" to 071 769 9258
