Speaking during the October Protea Sub- council meeting, ward councillor Elizabeth Brunette submitted a motion for Wynberg CBD to receive Murp funding. In her motivation, she explained over the years many studies have been done but not implemented. Brunette said road schemes had stifled de- velopment. With the plans to extend the MyCiTi bus service to Wynberg, she believed the new routes could be a catalyst for development. The Murp project was initiated by mayor Patricia de Lille in 2012. According to an earlier statement by the City, the programme aims to improve the safety, quality of life and the socio-economic situation of areas which were previously ne- glected. For the current financial year the Athlone CBD and Bellville transport interchange were chosen as projects. Wynberg Police Station commander Brig- adier Riaan Booysen and Community Police Forum (CPF) chairperson Shamila Nicholas have given their support to the project in the hope it will address vagrancy and other so- cial issues within the community. Brunette put the motion forward for the 2015/2016 financial year. According to Mayoral Committee member for Energy, Environmental and Spatial Planning, Johan van der Merwe, the City is not extending the programme. “However, should it decide to do so, the motion will be taken into consideration,” Van der Merwe points out. He explains the Murp focuses on CBDs, town centres, community nodes and corri- dors which have been neglected, resulting in dysfunctional and rapidly regressing areas. “The basis of the programme is to intro- duce a sustainable system of operations through the maintenance of public infra- structure and facilities, in partnership with communities,” he says. Van der Merwe says there are a number of considerations for the establishment of a Murp project, with a priority placed on re- dressing inequality. “Generally, areas where Murp projects are implemented are defined by a high popu- lation density. They have become urbanised within the last 20 years, where residential development has outstripped operational and capital development in the public do- main,” he says. Van der Merwe says the principle behind the programme is that, through intensive analysis and effective community-driven partnerships with civic organisations, shared action plans are developed. “Thus, Murp does not supply funding. The community constructed action plans are used to leverage funding from various sourc- es to achieve implementation,” he further explains. V What are your thoughts? HOT SUMMER GROOVE

Movers and shakersGARY VAN DYK

@gvdcapejazz

When the beat at the Hot SummerGroove gets going at the GrandWestArena on Saturday 6 December, not

many will realise that some of the stars fea-tured have a history that binds them sincechildhood.

Alistair Izobell, Ramaine Barreiro, Louk-maan and Emo Adams are no strangers tothe stage in South Africa. Their stories allhave their roots in Mitchell’s Plain sometime in the 1980s with a drama group calledKinders vannie Ses (Children of DistrictSix).

Barreiro remembers those times withfondness, especially the memory of the fourof them forming Nu Fancy. “Wow! What anexciting time for four laaities from the‘Plain,” she says, looking at a photo of thefour of them at the time.

“I think I was about 12 – basically a hun-dred years ago! We were all part of a localdrama group called Kinders vannie Ses[they are still running today]. From what Iremember, the Rockets called us in torecord and before we knew it we were tour-ing with them.”

Emo was only 12, Alistair was 14 andLoukmaan 15. “We were travelling all overSouth Africa, Namibia, little halls in everydorpie and we used to rock Club Fame inElsies River.”

Ramaine also reflects that being part ofthis group gave them a good foundation inthe entertainment industry. “We weretaught the old school way. Work hard andyou’ll get what’s coming to you. Looking atwhere we all are is proof of that.”

Ramaine was living out of town for a fewyears but relocated back home about a year

ago, starting herown manage-ment and pro-duction compa-ny. She takes an-other look at thephotowith thoseyoung facessmiling at her,and remembersthat none of itwouldhavebeenpossiblewithoutsome fantasticsupport. “We allhad parents whosupported whatwe do, we al-ways had peoplearound us whohad alreadybeen doing thisfor years tolearn from andwe had each oth-er,” she saysfondly.

Getting backto 2014, she saysshe is very excit-ed to be part ofthe show in De-cember.

Along withthese four, Peo-ple’s Post and sister publicationTygerBurg-er have secured a killer line-up for the first-ever Hot Summer Groove. Joining themwill be the popular all-female trio Blackb-yrd and the backing band Take Note.

An added bonus is that we will be givingaway a car at the show. Your ticket serves

as your entry. Up for grabs is a FAW V2 1.3worth R100 000. Since it’s the season of giv-ing, we’ll also be donating R5 of each ticketto the Trauma Centre in Zonnebloem.

Tickets for the Hot Summer Groove costfrom R130 and are available from Com-puticket.

The City of Cape Town’s Water and Sanitation Department will be completing azero-pressure test on the water supply feeding the water supply zone in Hout Bay onTuesday 4 November 2014.

This process will result in the disruption of the water supply to Hout Bay from 22:00 until04:00 the following morning.

Careful consideration has been given to the planning of this work to ensure minimaldisruption to the water supply to the affected areas.

The water supply network across the City is divided into reticulation zones which are smallerand much more manageable sections of the large network for the purposes of maintenanceand upgrades. This work forms part of the City’s Water Demand Management Plan and willreduce significantly the occurrence of pipe bursts and the subsequent water losses.

Residents are advised to store water in clean sealed containers for domestic use duringthis period.

The City regrets any inconvenience caused.

Cops ‘ready for festive season’ASTRID FEBRUARIE

@FebAstrid

With the festive season approaching,Wynbergpolicehave anumber of op-erations in place to ensure that the

public and businesses are safe.Through the partnership with Metro Po-

lice as well as neighbourhood watch struc-tures theywill continue to support and servethe community.

Shop and business owners are urged tobeef up their security; even though there hasbeenadecrease ofmore than 50% in shoplift-ing, it remains a problem and usually picksup during the holiday period.

Brigadier Riaan Booysen, station com-mander of Wynberg police, says police willalso be on high alert and are urging shopowners to be vigilant at all times.

“People steal the smallest things, but donot shy away from stealing things such asappliances and other more expensive stock.I urge shop owners to take the necessarysteps to protect themselves and their staff aswell as their goods,” he says.

In the past month Wynberg police madea number of successful arrests in variouscrime categories.

Police arrested 31 people for crimes relat-ed to assault, while 14 people were arrestedfor assaultwith intent to cause grievousbod-ily harm, six people were arrested for rob-bery and 10 arrests were made for property-related crimes.

Nomurders for this period were reported.

“We did, however, have two arrests forrapes, while property crime still remains aconcern,” he says.

Booysen saysmany of the house break-insand out of car thefts are directly related todrug problems.

“We have arrested two people for housebreak-ins and we have found that many ofthe people linked to these crimes are repeatoffenders who are dependent on drugs. Theywill break in and steal something which canbe sold off quickly for drugs,” he says.

Police made 44 drug-related arrests andseven of people driving under the influenceor alcohol.

While eight people were arrested for theftout of motor vehicles, the majority of thosearrested are also repeat offenders, Booysenadds.

“We will continue to focus on drugs andthe drug trade,” he says.

Police recently arrested the same man forthe third time in onemonth after hewas con-tinuously monitored and positively linkedto crime in Lower Church Street.

The suspectwas arrested by an off-duty re-servist who had managed to detain the manuntil police arrived to arrest him.

“I applaud the reservist for being commit-ted to his job even when off duty,” Booysensays.

“The partnerships we have with people inour community are important and every bithelps in our goal to serve and protect thecommunity.”

Police also arrested a woman after she

stole the date stamp at the police station.“This individual came into the charge of-

fice under false pretences, asking for two af-fidavit forms andwas caught in the actwhenshe stole the date stamp. However, the casehas been remanded,” Booysen says.

He is pleased, though, that there is a de-crease in the total number of contact crime, property and more serious crimes such as

hijackings. “We had no hijackings reportedthis month, and no cash in transit or bankrobberies occurred,” Booysen says.

He adds that the success rate for thismonth and previous months is a result of anexcellent partnership between the policeand external agencies, such as the military,Metro Police, Wynberg Improvement Dis-trict and several religious organisations.

PLUMSTEAD

Beating the oddsASTRID FEBRUARIE

@FebAstrid

If you were to ask Lisadu Plessis how she iscoping after her kid-

ney transplant, she justmight say: “Swimming-ly.”

The Plumstead wom-an broke three worldswimming records atthe 11th NationalTransplant Games thisyear. This after she hada kidney transplantwhich changed her life.

She broke the 50mand 100m breastroke,and 200m medleyevents.

Du Plessis, who wasdiagnosed with kidneyfailure in 2006, missedout on a fourth recordwhen she missed the50m freestyle event by two seconds.

After diagnosis she had to monitor andstabilise her condition before she could un-dergo the transplant.

While the condition affected her entirelife, she says the support and backing of herfamily helped her pull through. “Therewasa lot I couldn’t do and my family had to ad-just their lives to accommodate my needs.”

She describes herself prior to diagnosisas anormal healthyperson, whowas fit andhad no previous health issues.

“I had my own business and could copewith many things. It was a shock for me tofind out I had kidney failure,” she says.

“I realised God doesn’t let us go throughsomething we cannot cope with,” she says.

In November 2012, af-ter being extremely illfor three years, her spe-cialist informed her itwas time to go aheadwith proceedings forher transplant.

“I was fortunateenough that my sister-in-law was a match andoffered to donate herkidney,” she says.

After tests were con-ducted and analysed bythe national health de-partment, the trans-plant was scheduledand the operation was asuccess.

“I am so grateful tomy sister-in-law. She islike an angel that wassent to me,” Du Plessissays.

Despite her condi-tion, Du Plessis wanted

to get more involved in the lives of otherpeople who were diagnosed with kidneyfailure.

She joined the South African TransplantSport Association (Satsa) and met provin-cial chairperson Herman Steyn online.

Steyn encouraged her to participate inthe games and she agreed.

“I was always a swimmer, but had notcompeted in over 15 years. I had about threemonths of training leading up to the games. And Inever expected to breakany records,”she says, “but I am really chuffed with my-self.”

Du Plessis concludes: “I have gained an-other family through Satsa. The supportnetwork is amazing.”
