What should I be photographing?Try to look at your city critically and determine what elements of the built environment make it special and unique. This may be a single building, a collection of buildings, a square or plaza. It may be a building or space that has purpose, or it may be purely decorative. Is it something that your city is famous for, or something that it should be famous for? Perhaps it is a space or place that has special meaning for the city’s residents, although it may not be well known internationally. Does the city or place reflect the individual culture of your city – the materials and building techniques, the climate and the way of living? Is it of historical importance, or will it be in the future? And finally, and most importantly, how do people use the building or space, how does it help them and improve their lives, and how does it bind them together as a community?

What sort of camera should I be using?Whatever works for you works for us! You don’t need an expensive camera to take really good photographs and we encourage entrants to use any camera that is available to them. The imagination and perception of the photographer are the important things in this contest, not the specifications of the camera they’re using!

Can I edit my photographs in Photoshop®?Improvements to the contrast, colour balance and saturation of photograps are welcomed, and the correction of lens and perspective distortions can be a real benefit. However, you should avoid making significant edits that alter the content of the scene you have photographed, e.g. adding new elements that were not there or removing elements and features that were. The photograph should be an authentic representation of the scene as you observed it.

Do my photographs have to be recent? You should avoid submitting photographs of buildings or places that have changed significantly since you photographed them. The competition is seeking to see how people and architecture are interacting in 2013/2014, so your recent photographs are prefereable to older or outdated ones.

Can I submit more than three photographs?Yes, but you must register and pay the registration fee for each set of three photographs that you submit.
