South Deep Vice President, Benford Mokoatle described 01 March as the day that all South Deep employees started taking charge and leading change to proudly-make a difference. While presenting the new operating model, Benford emphasised the importance of the new shift cycle. “This change will help us to:

• Improve our productivity and better our business.

• Consistently generate the reserves, quality and quantity.• Consistently and efficiently, tram the reserve. • Improve equipment reliability.• Improve our infrastructure”, said Benford.

“With the new shift configuration, I have no doubt that our targets will be achieved with ease. We just need to ensure that we blast an end per rig, per shift. If you have one drill rig, you should aim to blast every single shift,” he stated.

“The new shifts will be 11hours & 30minutes, we hope to have enough time on the face and be able execute the four primary mining activities:

• Drill• Charge and Blast• Tramming • Support

If we can make these four primary activities part of our daily shifts, we will see the positive change we want to see at South Deep” added Benford.

In closing, the Vice President encouraged employees to take pride in their work and practice disciplined execution.

South Deep Gold Mine launched 4 X 4 Operating Model

01 March 2018, marked the beginning of a new era for South Deep employees. The new 4 x 4 operating model, 11hours & 30 minutes shift was launched. This new operating model is separated into three production shifts and one maintenance shift for the production and engineering teams.

Sabie Seboko – Acting Shift boss “Still adjusting to change, I am hopeful that things will change for the better and we will get our mine into a profitable position. We just need to be united and have disciplined execution.”

Sisanda Nikelo – Electrician “I am happy with the new change, we have to embrace change and face it head-on. We have a task of making the mine profitable and cash neutral, I would not want

to miss being part of the team that changed South Deep’s future. I am happy especially now that I will have more weekends to go to church.”

Tumani Moleleki – “We have worked 4 x 4 before, we are used to the 12 hours shift. We will turn the mine around to cash positive and profitable; this is our chance to turn our business around. Let us take the opportunity with both hands and bring our best game every day.”

South Deep in partnership with Sizabantu Healthcare undertook a week long Wellness Campaign which was held at both Twin and South Shafts from 08:00am to 16:00pm. The service providers were present throughout the week to provide wellness services such as counselling and testing for illnesses to South Deep employees and our business partners. “March is also known as TB month, therefore employees and business partners were encouraged to get themselves tested for TB and other TB related illnesses. There was free screening for blood pressure, diabetes, TB and anonymous HIV/AIDS including counselling, and testing throughout the week,” added Benford

SUMMIT and KAELO were also there to make sure that our employees look into their financial wellness so that they can be aware of their wellness holistically.

In total, 780 employees and business partners were examined and tested throughout the campaign.

Luke Tshehla joined South Deep in 2016, as a Mining Graduate Official. This is a three year programme, which offers mining engineering students practical work training and a chance to obtain their blasting certificates and Shift-Supervisor Certificate while getting training and mentorship from South Deep.

The 23 year old from Limpopo, has a national diploma in mining engineering with University of Johannesburg, and is the first ever-mining graduate at South Deep to obtain his blasting certificate through the Department of Minerals and Resources. “I appreciate the training that South Deep has offered me, which prepared me to obtain my blasting certificate. Now is the time for me to work and be productive. The next step is to get my Shift Supervisor Certificate, which I hope to attain while still at South Deep. The future is very bright here; I am not going anywhere. I am a proud South Deep product,” said Luke

Gideon Hayward HR Manager Technical Training said this is a great achievement for South Deep and is worth congratulating. “Previously we obtained our Blasting Certificate through Mining Qualifications Authority, and now we work directly with the DMR. I am proud to say that Luke is our first learner to obtain his Blasting Certificate on the first attempt with DMR,” said Gideon.

“We wish him all the best with his training and career progression plan,” added Gideon

Delivering our Vision, Living our Values

Meet South Deep’s two best Drill Rig OperatorsThe Engineering Department headed by Luyanda Xulu, is embarking on a campaign that seeks to recognise

and appreciate the best machine operators on the mine.

South Deep’s best Drill Rig Operators are:} Phillip Mnisi } Tsunduka Makaukau

Both operators work at South Shaft and both are from the Limpopo Province. One of the main reasons behind their selection as the best operators is that the two operators have been consistent when operating their drill rigs; they meet their daily targets. They both use the same supporting method, which sees them finish their hanging wall support in less than 1 hour.

Phillip Mnisi, Drill Rig Operator

Tsunduka Makaukau, Drill Rig Operator

ü Employees and operators need to understand the importance of the machine

ü Best operators must be acknowledged for their work

ü The operators must share tips and advice on how they do their job

ü Improving employees’ behaviours towards their machines

ü Best operators must motivate other employees

ü Motivate their team mates to get maximum face-time/production from their machines

The campaign’s main objective is that:

Tsunduka Makaukau grew up in Louis Trichardt, and growing as a young man, he never thought he would end up working at a mine. Tsunduka joined South Deep in 2011 as an electrician assistant, and in 2013; he got a job as a shaft helper. On the same year, Tsunduka worked as production assistant underground and trained on atlas ST1030 scoop, LH 514, MT436B Dump Truck. DD421/321 drill rig and in 2015 was appointed drill rig operator South Shaft 87-1W & 2W.

Makaukau enjoys working on the drill rig and he does not feel any fatigue. “That machine is like my second home, I spend more than 8 hours on top of that machine. I drive it with passion and physically it is not tiring. I drill, support and make sure I meet my daily targets,” said Makaukau

“It is important to understand your machine and be able to do fault finding as an operator of any machine. Be prepared to go an extra-mile, I do not wait for an artisan to show me the machine fault. After all, I spend most of

Phillip Mnisi grew up in Limpopo, Phalaborwa; his father worked as a truck operator at Phalaborwa Mining Company. “I fell in love with operating machines from a young age. I looked-up to my dad. He instilled the passion, he won awards for being the best operator, that’s where I got my passion for operating mining equipment/machines,” said Phillip

Phillip has more than 15 years-experience as a drill rig operator, and he joined South Deep in 2013 as a

drill rig operator. Although Phillip enjoys his work, he acknowledges there is still a room for improvement and teamwork. From the previous mines that Phillip worked as a drill rig operator, they used roofbalt for support but when he got to South Deep, it was easy for him to adapt to the drill rig supporting method. “The love for my job makes it easy for me to learn new things, everyday has its challenges and we need to approach them differently. When you love what you do, you will not be intimidated by change and new ways of doing things,” said Phillip

Phillip says the support from his supervisors and fellow operators has made things easy for him, particularly Tsunduka Makaukau; the two operators do proper handover. The two operators call each other just to give each other some advice and heads-up regarding the rigs they both use.

“Supervisors are supportive, I get my survey notes on time and everything is made simple for me. We have a great work ethic and we respect each other,” added Phillip

Philip shared advice with fellow operators. “Admit that every day you learn a new thing, everyday has new challenges and be open to criticism and advice from other operators. Most importantly, love your machine and you work, let your work be a hobby,” concluded Phillip

my time on the mine, so it is my responsibility to know the machine,” added Tsunduka

Tsunduka shared some advice with fellow operators. “You must be willing to share and learn from others. As a rig operator, you must make sure that you blast and support. You must love support; it is a crucial part of mining and forms part of the four primary mining activities. Report breakdowns, and do handover to the next operator,” said Tsunduka

Both operators had similar challenges:} If we can get material for support, ready for all

sections that need to be supported on time. I think everyone will be able to work efficiently. We need to be proactive with our planning and preparation of the new faces we will be mining.

} I wish all the ventilation fans can be connected on time, because without them, I am not able to drill. It takes a while to get the fans running. I wish we could all have a sense of urgency.

Tsunduka enjoys spending time with his family, his wife Daphney and his 3-year-old son Ntsakisi. “Family is important to me, I do not have a lot of friends, and I spend my time with my family. Everything that I do, I do for my family. All the hard work is for them. I am paving a way for my son, he also has a future at South Deep,” said Makaukau

Phillip and Tsunduka both believe that South Deep has a bright future and everyone needs to adopt the two blast per rig per shift methodology. “This methodology will make a huge difference if everyone can adopt it and understand the importance thereof. Change is not easy, but this change is important, if we can master the two blast per shift, South Deep will be back to its former glory days,” said the duo.

Both operators have the same dream, which is to get an opportunity to study for blasting certificate, which they believe is an important certification every operator needs to have.

South Deep SAP went liveon 01 March 2018

South Deep employees dress-up for Valentine’s Day

The much-anticipated SAP Project went live as planned on 01 March 2018 at South Deep

Gold Mine. This will go in history as one of the greatest milestones at South Deep. Employees had payslip training through videos depicting the interim and month end SAP payslips were played on electronic displays throughout the mine. Posters showing the changes on the new SAP Payslips have also been displayed on notice boards across the Mine and at the Help Desks.

In addition, payslip training sessions were scheduled for 12 and 13 March in the mustering rooms at both shafts for underground employees, as well as the safety boardroom at Twin Shaft and the training centre at South Shaft for surface employees. Help Desk Procedures – help desks were set up at both Twin Shaft (original payroll office) and South Shaft (ER boardroom) to ensure intensive support for all employees in the post go-live period, and were manned by super users for quick turnaround times for queries. All managers and supervisors are therefore implored to sign off all leave or additional shifts on behalf of direct reports timeously to ensure employees are paid correctly.

Throughout the world, 14 February is known and celebrated as Valentine’s Day. South Deep joined in on the celebration. On the day, employees dressed in red and white, the two colours that symbolise love.

Minenhle Hlabisa is from Ulundi, Kwa Zulu – Natal, she was the rose amongst thorns when she joined the South Deep junior engineers programme in 2014. Minenhle says she chose to study mechanical engineering because she had an interest in materials science, principles to design, analyse and manufacture, maintain mechanical systems and manage engineering teams.

Minnie, as she is known across the mine, has not allowed being a girl amongst a group of young men to deter her from her goals. “It has not been easy, especially as a lady, you do not get any special treatment. You put in the same energy as your male counterparts. The mentorship was really helpful and the tough love from fellow engineers has been great,” said Minnie.

Minnie says she saw each challenge as an opportunity to better understand what is going on around her and those she work with. This has allowed her to construct a better approach to challenges.

Engineering practice is an important puzzle in the mining process. Engineers help to design and solve any mechanical and logistical challenges the mine might have. They provide services to the entire mining process. Safety Day Campaign for Business PartnersSafety is Gold Fields number one value,

and this includes all of Gold Fields business partners. Safety should be our

lifestyle; we should live and breathe safety. “I cannot over emphasise the importance of living and practicing the safety value” said Christo Oliphant, a Mine Overseer at Twin Shaft working for New Mine Development. This Safety day session, which was held on 21 February 2018 at Emoyeni hostel hall, for South Deep business partners was aimed at emphasising the importance of working safely at all times and ensuring that all the business partners are abiding by the Gold Fields rules of safety.

South Deep safety department facilitated the safety refresher workshop for New Mine Development and Projects teams. Employees were divided into groups to have their own discussions and give feedback. They all identified major concerns that contribute to unsafe practices that lead to accidents. A few challenges and mitigations were identified and the employees motivated one another to work as a team and always be each other’s keeper when it comes to safety.

“I want to grow in the field of engineering and I want to empower the business to ensure it reaches the required goals. Engineers work everywhere; engineers are involved in making all the wonders of the future a reality, the world needs female engineers,” added Minenhle

Fankie Kwinda was born in Tshiombo, Sibasa, in the Limpopo province; he joined South Deep in 2014 as engineering intern. Fankie said his late uncle, Moses Shengwenyane, who was a mechanic, inspired him. Moses built a helicopter, which operated in the North West province and passed on before he could complete his second helicopter.

“I then dedicated my life to Mechanical engineering studies in order to pursue this dream but I later realised there is more to Engineering than the helicopter dream. I now feel prepared to turn around the mining industry as a whole, to participate in growing our mine and to give back to the community through motivating and inspiring our youth,” said Kwinda

Kwinda said Engineering Manager Danie Bezuidenhout’s mentorship was the highlight of his training programme. “Through Danie’s mentorship, I gained valuable principles regarding engineering and life. Wise words spoken by Danie are, Passion is like a high-octane fuel

that points and propels you forward in the direction of a unique purpose. Be inspired to push past your comfort zone and to reach for more; to live a life of purpose and realise your potential by living your life to the maximum,” added Kwinda

Fankie Kwinda was awarded the best Engineer of quarter three in 2015, which made him realise hard work and consistency beat talent any day.

“I did not choose engineering, engineering chose me,” concluded Fankie

We wish Minenhle and Fankie all the best in their future!

Section Mine Planners from Ghana visit South Deep

South Deep Gold Mine hosted two section mine planners from Gold Fields Ghana. South Deep’s Drill & Blast engineers, Mzwakhe Tshabalala and Martin Nyarela, accompanied the section planners underground.

The purpose of the visit was for the visitors to familiarise themselves with South Deep’s mining methods, in particular the destress sections. They are coming from an open pit background, so this was to have exposure to the long hole layouts, schedules and execution strategies. The visit covered the areas between 93 Level and 95 3W, Mega and destress sections.

Edu Space is a career guidance show that offers career information to ensure that students and graduates are ready for the workplace. The show focuses on different professions to assist students to navigate through the very difficult journey of choosing a career.

On 26 March 2018 they came to South Deep to do a profile on mining. The interviewee that was chosen was Takalani Randima because she is a woman in mining. This shows that women are making big steps in the mining industry.

The Edu Space team got an experience of a lifetime, going underground. It was nothing like what they expected. “The most shocking thing about it was how big the tunnels were and the fact that there is actually ventilation down there” said Ayanda Dyantyi, the producer. The show is broadcast every Monday at 17:00pm on Soweto TV Channel 251 and a repeat on Wednesdays at 12:30pm.

This particular show was aired on 16 April 2018.

“I found mining engineering quiet challenging especially when you are studying and have not been to an operational mine. You need to know what stopping and crosscuts are, you cannot just visualise from a classroom, you need to see it physically,” said Ompha

Ompha shared one of his major recommendations: Geologists must do further studies on the composition of the dikes and its behaviour when under stress. In his closing remarks, Ompha said he hopes this is not the first and last experience; they would love to establish this kind of relationship with Gold Fields.

Nosipho Mageza,21 years old from Soweto, Gauteng

“This is my first experience being at a functional mine and it has been a great one. It has been an eye-opener; I hope I will find something that will keep me at South Deep.”

The following are Nosipho’s recommendations:

• The pipes need to be cleaned on the inside or replaced with new pipes, which have automatic pressurised self-cleaning equipment such as strainers.

• The absence of cladding will affect the temperature of the water inside the pipes (increased rate in heat exchange). The cladding needs to be repaired.

• Normal pipe material can be mixed with chromium.

Gold Fields, South Deep Gold Mine is a mechanised mine based on the West Rand of Johannesburg. The mine has second best ore-body in the world, has the deepest single drop shaft in the world. These are some of the characteristics that make South Deep a special mine that requires a typical miner of the future, a miner that

embraces technology and innovation. Innovation being one of Gold Fields values, we are open to change and support new ways of working, even when the ideas may not be our own. We are optimistic about what the future can deliver. The organisation recently accommodated six mining engineering honours students from Witwatersrand University at South Deep to do research and investigation that forms part of their honours programme.

Asabonga started to have interest in mining when he was in grade nine and ever since then with the support of his parents, he started reading up on mining history in South Africa. “It’s kind of a sweet thought because what we study at university is completely different to what you see when you get underground. Mining requires one to be a hard worker and be prepared to go an extra mile,” said Asabonga

Asabonga shared his advice for the business. “South Deep has a great potential, I am sure everyone knows that by now but I think everyone needs to understand the importance of optimising workmanship to increase the effective working time,” added Asabonga

COMMUNITY

Nana Mzolo from Poortjie, one of South Deep’s host communities, is the first and eldest learner to pass her ABET level 1 with flying colours. The 72 year old got 92% for Communication (English) and 58% Numeracy (Maths).

The purpose of the career guidance was to give exposure to learners from our local communities in regard to career opportunities available in the mining industries. Speaking on behalf of Engineering Department, Fankie Kwinda encouraged learners to be dedicated and not conform to peer pressures. “You build your own life; do not be misled by friends. You need to work hard and be prepared to go an extra mile in your school work. Engineering is fun, you solve problems and creative systems, you need to be a creative and a hard worker if you want to be an engineer,” said Kwinda

Speaking on behalf Geology Department, Teboho Hlapa explained what Geologists do at the mine and what subjects one needs to choose in order to become a geologist. “You need to love mathematics and physical sciences. Make sure you pass all your subjects with an average of 65%. Geologists take rock samples and confirm the quality of the mineral before surveyors give miners the direction to mine,” said Teboho

“Geology is an interesting practice; you can work for both private and public sector. Just like any other course, you need to work hard and love what you do and you will excel at it. Focus on your studies, and choose your subjects very careful. Do not be influenced by friends, you must do self-introspection, consult with your teachers and get advice,” added Teboho

South Deep takes part in Career ExpoDepartment of Mineral Resources invited Gold Fields to exhibit at a career expo held on Thursday, 15 March at Wedela Technikon High School and Friday, 16 March 2018 at Tswasongu Secondary School. South Deep Human Resources department presented on the careers available at the mine and recruitment processes. Internship, Bursaries and learnerships. Metallurgy and Mechanical Department representatives also presented on opportunities available in their respective departments.

She left school when she was doing Standard 5 when she discovered that she was pregnant. After the pregnancy, she could not go back to school, since she had to raise her child. She stayed away from school for 55 years and at the age of 71, she decided to go back and finished what she had started (AET).

“I remember there was a day when I wanted to quit at AET because I failed Maths in the first phase but I managed to push myself and continued because the facilitators encouraged me to keep pushing. I am glad I did because now I have passed my Level 1, which is a motivation to my grandchildren and the youth out there. I am very happy that I passed, it shows that nothing is impossible.” She further went on to say that, the MQA Grant (R5000) that she received from passing her level 1 will help her a lot, she is still planning what she will do with it because Mr. Mosa Ramalefane, the principal always encourages them to use the money wisely when they receive it.

Nana attends at the South Deep ABET Centre, which is open for employees and community members. Gogo Nana says she wants to continue with her studies as it helps keep her mind busy and active at all time. Gogo Nana’s day starts at 04:00 in the morning, as she has to prepare for three Nana Mzolo with with her class teacher Simphiwe Radebe.

Class teacher Simphiwe Radebe commended Nana for her behaviour and hard work. “At her age, Nana was the eldest in her class but she was the most disciplined and respectful, I even learned some respect from her,” said Simphiwe

“It’s an honour for me to have had Nana in my class, she instilled discipline, she was dedicated and always asked questions, which is what we always, encourage learners to do when they don’t understand,” added SimphiweWhen asked about her performance, Gogo Nana, as they call her in class just smiled with modesty. “I wish I could turn back the time, be young and go back to school. Education is very

important, unfortunately during our time we did not get the chance. I just thought to myself let me use the opportunity offered by South Deep and keep my mind busy,” said Nana

“I would like to thank South Deep for this opportunity; young people must take education very important. I would also like to call on my peers, it is never too late, come and join the ABET Centre,” added Gogo-Nana

Mrs. Mzolo hopes to improve her Numeracy marks at level: 2 and be consistent with her Communications. “It is not easy when you are at my age but I am prepared to work hard, I am aiming for 70 and above for numeracy and another 90 for communications,” concluded Gogo-Nana

AET at South Deep is open to all local communities and our neighbouring communities. AET offers two learning areas, which is Communications and Numeracy. The school is currently training about 300 people, employees and the community. It offers Level 1 to 3 as a minimum qualification. Level 4 is offered to those people who choose to continue because it is equivalent to Grade 9.

Other programmes offered by AET:

• Grade 12 upgrading programme for the learners who are repeating grade 12 in Maths, Life Science, Geography and Physical Science.

• Saturday Tutorials for learners who are currently doing grade 12 in Maths, Life Science, Geography and Physical Science.

• Life skills programme for grade 12 on key things such as, how to apply to universities, how to get bursaries and different ways to tackle studying for exams or tests.

Community Open Days

Engaging people face to face makes is easy to clear misunderstandings on the spot and allows an opportunity for questions to be answered. The Community Open Day sessions hosted by the Community Relations

department, have become a great platform for community members to engage South Deep personnel on issues that affect them.

On Monday 12 March, Gold Fields Sustainable Development Department in partnership with the Federation for Sustainable Environment (FSE) conducted an environmental awareness workshop on environment and Acid Mine Drainage (AMD) with Westonaria Hoerskool grade 12 learners.

The purpose of the workshop was to capacitate the learners with information and influence positively their perception on mine environmental impact. The learners also got an opportunity to ask questions and engage about how different mines deal with their waste. The workshop was attended by more than 80 learners and teachers from the area.

The Hoërskool Westonaria Management requested the mine to focus on the overview of the water situation in South Africa and Acid Mine Drainage. The presentation highlighted the current situation being experienced by the West Rand Basin, it highlighted the causes of Acid Mine Drainage and the current interventions being done by the government which is the short, medium and long term solutions. Short term interventions are currently being implemented by the department of Water Affairs. Which comprises of the reduction of the high salt content in the decanting water.

We also highlighted other aspects of environmental management, such as air quality management and bio-diversity management and how the mine manages those aspects to ensure that they are not compromised, thus impacting the community.

This community outreach is used as an important tool to encourage and maintain open lines of communication with the leaners and prevent the development of tensions between the mine and the neighboring communities. We also aim to change the negative perceptions of our host communities.

622 community members in Bekkersdal, Thusanang and Westonaria communities during quarter one. Gold Fields is targeting more than 1 000 community members through Community Open Days,” said Harmony Ntlemo

Community member, Miranda Maki shared her thoughts about the Open Day “These sessions are very helpful I am now able to talk directly to people who can help me with my specific needs, as a woman, I was not comfortable speaking in public during the mass meetings, now I thank Gold Fields for this initiative as they really empower with information during these one on one sessions”

Gold Fields South Deep Community Relations, Sustainable Development, Human Resources, Environmental Department, Business Development Centre, South Deep Community Trust and Educational Trust and other departments have been holding Open Day sessions the local communities. Recently 4 sessions were held, one in Thusanang, Bekkersdal ,Westonaria and Hillshaven Community.

“The community open day is more convenient than the community mass meetings. Open days are very helpful because there is no confusion; you get to access information from the right person,” Community member Regina Mataboge said

COMMUNITY

South Deep Gold Mine (Sustainable Development Department) in partnership with Federation for a Sustainable Environment (FSE) facilitated an environmental awareness tour for Hoërskool Westonaria learners and teachers on 28 March 2018.

Hoërskool Westonaria Environmental Tour

The West Rand has been at the centre of the discovery of gold since the 1880s. The tour started at the Wonderfonteinspruit (Donaldson Dam). Then proceeded to Krugersdorp to visit Mintails’ Gold Mining operations.

The leaners visited the reclaimed Sand Dump 20 tailings storage facility owned by Sibanye Stillwater in Randfontein. The tour ended at South Deep’s Doornpoort tailings storage facility where learners got to learn about the concurrent rehabilitation together with active mining in terms of the requirements of the National Environmental Management Act (NEMA) 107 of 1998.

Gold Fields’ South Deep gold mine’s Environmental Practitioner, Vukosi Tinghitsi said: “With responsibility being one of Gold Fields critical values, we pride ourselves by taking responsibility for our host communities, environment and our employees”.

The purpose of the tour was to conduct environmental awareness, empowering learners with knowledge to understand the various practical aspects of mining in accordance with their curriculum. The tour consisted of grade 12 learners and their educators and headmaster.

The tour was interactive and the learners had an opportunity to ask questions and engage with industry experts. South Deep Communications Department caught up with some of the learners and this is what they had to say about the tour.

What did you think about the tour?Thamsanqa Masingila: “The tour was very informative, I gained a lot of knowledge about the legacy of mining.”

Was the tour helpful?

Nombulelo Sigwashe: “The tour was very helpful, I learned that tailings dams are not natural mountains, it’s the waste coming from the mines.”

What do you think should be done to the mines that are practising bad mining?Luyolo Makongolo: “From my perspective, I think the government should start working closely with the mines and their surrounding communities to ensure compliance to the applicable legislation.”

Your highlight for the day?Thokozile Mkhize: “My highlight was learning about my surrounding mining environment and the benefits it provides to communities. I also learnt that mining started a long time around the 1800’s, when there were no proper legislations governing mining, and this has resulted in the negative legacy issues that we experiencing in the West Rand Region.”

Questions and Answers

South Deep will be conducting more environmental tours in order to raise awareness in neighbouring communities. CEO of Federation for Sustainable Environment, Mariette Liefferink, encouraged the learners to be activists and participate in environmental issues in their communities to ensure that the current legacy issues are not repeated in the future and that future generations can enjoy an environment that is not harmful to health and well-being as is stated in Section 24 of the South African Constitution.

Sports update

On Sunday 18 February 2018 South Deep Athletic team participated in the Pirates 21.1km half marathon at Greenside. The race follows a circular route, running past the water tower on top of Northcliff Hill and back again.

The first half had three challenging hills, the first starting after 1km and then undulating with two more serious climbs, the last peaking at the King of the Mountain point at about 14km. In its 39th year, the race is regarded as one of the country’s most challenging half marathons. Our fastest runner Frans Mola who came second in the 10km weeks ago at Edenvale couldn’t believe to have finished this 21km in two hours and five minutes. Congratulations to Frans and the whole South Deep team!

South Deep Crusaders Rugby Team played a friendly match at Harmony (Elandsrand Mine in Carletonville) on 18 March 2018, they played four games on the day.
