Among them are (and were) Kiki Berten, Victoria Duval, Shelby Rogers, Eugenie Bouchard, Christina McHale, Grace Min, Alison Riske, Taylor Townsend and Madison Keyes. There are sev- eral other highly skilled players who are and were in attendance for this event competing to their heart’s content for the sake of victory. As of Monday’s action, Grace Min beat Zarina Diyas, 6-1, 6-2, in what many considered a mild upset. Madison Brengle lost to Michelle Larcher DeBrito,6-4, 7-5. Taylor Townsend was defeated, 6-4, 6-7(5), 6-3, by Jarmila Gajdosova. All these winners qualified to advance for further play in the week’s future main matches. North Charleston Fire Dept. Selects New Batallion Chief Charleston Native Terrence L. Richardson has been pro- tomed to Batallion Chief of the North Charleston Fire Department. A promotional ceremony was held on March 21, 2014 in the Council Chambers at City Hall of North Charleston for the fire- men that were promoted to new positions. Richardson began duty of the new position on February 17, 2014. He is in charge of four sta- tions on the southside of North Charleston and is responsible for incident command at these stations. He also oversees the daily activities and daily roster- ing of the personnel on shift. Richardson is a 1989 graduate of Burke High School. In Septmeber of 2011, he earned an Associates Degree of Fire Science at Columbia Southern University in Orange Beach, Alabama . He is also a marine veteran. Terrence is a member of Cathedral of Praise on Ashley Phosphate road in North Charleston. Terrence L. Richardson Terrence is married to the for- mer Jennifer Wilson and they have two children, their daugther Olivia(15) and son Reese(10). He is the son of Joe and Mary Frances Richardson. Carlotta Redish Elected to SCSU Board of Trustees The South Carolina General Assembly elected a 25-year education veteran to the South Carolina State University Board of Trustees. Dr. Carlotta Redish, assistant superintendent for Personnel and Student Services for Spartanburg School District Seven in Spartanburg, S.C., joined the board on Feb. 5. Redish holds the 5th district seat. Dr. Carlotta Redish “I con- sider it to be an honor to serve on the board of trustees for South Carolina State University because of its rich history. “Doctors, lawyers, engineers, architects, great teachers, civic leaders and Supreme Court justices have graduated from South Carolina State University,” said Redish. “It is a stellar university, and I believe that SC State has the potential to be the best institu- tion of higher learning in the state of South Carolina,” she continued. In her current role, Redish develops management objectives and engages in long-range planning in the areas of personnel and student services for the school district, which has more than 7,200 students. Prior to serving in the Spartanburg School District, she was employed as the asso- ciate superintendent for Instructional and Administrative Services in the Cherokee County School District. There she developed instructional programs and intervention programs for more than 9,142 students. Redish, who lives by the edu- cation philosophy, “children first,” has experience in k-12, secondary education and high- er education, which Board Chairman Dr. William Small believes will be beneficial to the board and university. “We are pleased to have Dr. Carlotta Redish University of South Carolina. She later received an educa- tional specialist degree in edu- cational administration and instructional supervision from Jacksonville State University. In 2010, she received a Doctor of Philosophy in child develop- ment-12 (educational leader- ship and policy) from the University of South Carolina. She is a member of several affiliations throughout the state of South Carolina: the South Carolina Association of School Administrators, the South Carolina Personnel Roundtable, Spartanburg Downtown Rotary Club, the South Carolina Alliance of Black School Educators and the South Carolina Reading Alliance. Redish previously served as a Content Fellow for the University of Pittsburgh Learning Research Development Center. She is a member of the Links, Inc. and Jack and Jill of America.
